Oh my. How could you understand how stories of this nature are told. You dont know the pain, history, or the struggle. Does not mean it's not a good movie.🤨
Almost every anticipated movie this award season has turned out to be a disappointment, Nightbitch, queer, maria, the room next door, joker 2, all disappointing meanwhile movies that were on nobody's radar are doing well and taking award season by storm Demi moore-the substance is gaining so much momentum. Saturday night, the brutalist,
I mostly agree with you, although I wouldn't call the room NEXT door a disappointment Brian gave an 8 seems to be doing really well (festival wise) also the BRUTALIST like the substance came outta nowhere
Would love to see Moore get an Oscar nod but I think two things hold her back : body horror is a genre The Acting branch won't touch and the Best Actress category is so competitive this year.
@@mr29 I am so sick of horror movies still being ignored. Horror has really stood the test of time when it comes to popularity unlike most other genres and nowadays many of the best reviewed films of the entire year are horror. It is a new era and Oscars need to get with the times!
Rotten Tomatoes just tells you whether the reviews are generally positive or negative, not whether they're raving about a movie or saying it's just OK.
When Denzel first announced about ten years ago that he was going to produce films of all ten of August Wilson's plays, I would have thought he would be almost done by now. He has seven more to go. The Piano Lesson had already been filmed for TV in 1995 with four members of the original Broadway cast, and it was pretty good, so they could have saved this one for later. Joe Turner's Come and Gone could be good if they ever get around to it.
This is embarrassing to admit but I've seen him in a couple of movies and was like how is this new guy suddenly getting large high profile roles in expensive movies out of nowhere. I didn't even put two and two together it was Denzel's son but now it makes perfect sense. Think of all of the excellent hard-working actors out there who get passed over for him. Nepotism strikes again.
Not saying that she won’t be Oscar caliber great here, but I do think Danielle Deadwyler’s potential nomination here will be a makeup nomination after being overlooked for Till. Much like Paul Giamatti being overlooked for Sideways, but remembered the next year for Cinderella Man. I have to wait til November to see it for myself but I’m anticipating it. The supernatural aspects reminds me of Beloved, the Toni Morrison story.
67 on metacritic with 8 reviews. You would expect more from a movie like this. Even more concerning that the entire cast is not getting rave reviews. These stage to screen adaptions usually rely heavily on the performances and it seems like it underwhelms outside of Deadwyler.
I liked this movie more than Brian. The ghost part of the movie didn’t work for me but the struggle over the ownership of the piano kept me interested. While SLJ’s performance wasn’t Oscar worthy, I didn’t think it was as Brian made it out to be.
I agree with you- the movie was meh at best. Mind you, I love the play and 1995 version was phenomenal. This movie felt more like a recording of a play versus a movie adaptation of the play. The 1995 version actually felt like a movie instead of a play. It didn’t connect- like in this movie, the day time lasted 2seconds before it was night again, why did they need to get the piano back, did he take the piano apart to carve those pieces on a flat surface, and who knew that Boy Willy was upstairs fighting Sutter?? When I have turn off my logical brain to get through a movie, it’s not good.
I also couldn't understand why the music and dance sequences were there. They added nothing to the story that I could tell. In fact, I have already decided to go back and watch it again just to make sure I didn't appreciate it as much as I wanted to. I want to give it another chance.
I think lead actor is still wide open that I still have John David Washington in, and Deadwyler is for sure getting in. I'd argue maybe Ray Fisher has a small chance of getting in Supporting Actor as well.
There wasn't any wrong with this movie. In general movies of this type are not particularly my cup of tea but that didn't make it bad or to where I couldn't appreciate the performances. There are several stage play like films that all take place in one room or setting. Have you every seen 12 Angry Men? It all takes place in a deliberation room of a court house and it was great.
Encanto proved that can be enjoyable... but I suppose the house being alive and having magical rooms that are bigger on the inside is a bit of an unfair advantage.
If Malcolm Washington was guided in directing by his father Denzel Washington, who is one of the best actors in history but a rather flat director, no wonder the film is mediocre. The trailer already gave me a bad feeling.
It's a shame SLJ has fallen out of the race pretty much. He was nominated for a Tony for this role just this last year; it's disappointing that his role seems to have been diminshed and used more as background. Hope Daniella gets in, though!
Was he ever in the race, except in the minds of people who made predictions based on what it looked like on paper? I remember that someone months ago, when everyone else was predicting him to be the frontrunner for Best supporting actor, said that his role in the play is not that big and that they weren't sure why he was nominated for a Tony. It might have been just for name recognition, and because many years ago he originated the lead role (the one played by John David Washington in the movie).
@@FrakkinToasterLuvva I mean, that's an excellent point, but most of these predictions for almost two-thirds of the year are just in the minds of people based on what they see on paper. August Wilson film adaptations have, to date, provided good vehicles for actors to get nominated for Oscars so far (4 performances to date) and to damn near win them; I would say that Viola (for Ma Rainey), Chadwick (same film), and Denzel (for Fences) were probably the runners-up their respective years; Viola, of course, won for Fences. SLJ's role isn't a great or large one, based on my reading of the play years ago, but I thought sentiment alone would carry him to at least be on the list (maybe 4th or 5th place). I'm also thinking that the fact that no one seems to love this film suggests this film is not going to carry a freight train of nominations. Maybe one, two that's it.
I been told you all this movie it not the reason why someone hype it before see it because they don't have a good movie in be in top 10 best picture but we have WICKED the real good movie to be in 10 best picture but you all white man always make joke about this movie because you all never saw it and I tell you all what? / this movie WICKED is the only Universal Pictures make campaign to win Oscar they didn't choose any movie to nominated like this movie so they must pretty sure how good of this movie to win + this studio they have a lot of money to make this movie to win ( in a good way ) be careful when this movie come out you all own apologize !!!!!!

Samuel Jackson portrays an elderly man at least 70ish. How many older people do you see get up often.

I think she's got it in the bag. Maybe not win, but probably top-3. I think the growing force that is Emilia Perez could tilt it in Zoe's favor.
Every Film adaptation of Wilson's plays are stagey.
Because - theater and cinema are different and distinct mediums. Some times it works. Other times it doesn't
I also disliked it a lot. Felt even more theatrical than Fences.
It wasn’t meant for you so 🤷🏽♀️yea
No, this is the only real review I’ve found. The 1995 version of this movie was way better and was made for tv….
This movie was excellent and John David killed the movie ! Everybody did the best movie I seen in years ! Spiritually shook
No, it wasn’t. Good parts, but not worthy of any real awards. Y’all just want it to be good.

I agree sadly. Even though she has put in some great work. I still think she should have been nominated for ‘From Scratch”
I loved this movie so much and the 1995 adaptation. Both great!
1995 was better.

Felicity Jones
Zoe saldana
Anjulie ellis taylor
