Great analysis. The G league is not full of good basketball players. It’s full of the best “athletes” with size and length available. If this dude wasn’t popular as a content creator, there’s no chance he could ever even get a look. A ton of guys look good in clips, in pick up and controlled environment. The reason they aren’t playing high level basketball is because they’re not good basketball players. They do not know how to play within a system. Make plays for other players. You have to know how to adapt and play a role when you aren’t primary guy. This is the only era of basketball where stuff like this is taken seriously.
He actually looks like one of the better players at those tryouts. They have open tryouts like this to hopefully scout out any talent that slipped through the cracks of school ball. The deal is that it's an open tryout and it costs $250 to try out. There aren't many superstars that came up that way, but there's a smattering of solid NBA players that made the cut at open tryouts, notably some international players that came to the U.S. just to try out.
@@futurefox635 if you believe that, I have a bridge for sale for 9.99. Yore watching highlights dude. Even though the guy who posted showed some mistakes, I know for sure there were too many to show. @@AlphasPlayBasketball your correct. Most people dont understand that these tryouts are literally just a way for them to make money. The talented players already have seperate individual invites to practices and stuff. Sure maybe once in a million years if someone is dunking on everyones head they may invite him but chances are if he was able to do taht he would have already been known in college and not need to do this tryout for citizens. That being said one thing i did notice about tristan is he's always killing it in his edited tapes but then he goes up against other youtubers live he's simply not performing. it's disappointing compared to his youtube videos.
Basketball is a discriminatory sport, and you have to be a pest to make it on that level if you're smaller. Facu and Alvarado were great examples, and I'm a bit older so I think a lot of how amazing Earl Boykins was at his height as well. You need to be faster, and be a great offensive weapon to counter the defense liability that you will be, to justify being on the floor. It's tough!
It's not discriminatory. If you are a liability your Team will loose most likely and thats your responsibilty. same goes for a tall guy that is slow or lacks as an interior defender.
@@Schorsch5Discriminatory because if you see two people you’ll tend to favour the taller one all things being equal and in a lot of cases even if the shorter one is better skilled. Height is a prerequisite. So that automatically removes a lot of people. You rarely see guys below 6ft on professional teams. There’s a reason.
@@antgoods87 Man, I don't know if you comment on 1v1 players, but I would say all them well known 1v1 cats. Nas, Friga, Nesco, Scoob, Hezi, Rob, Dev. Maybe some of the lesser known ones like Marthreenez and the I'm 40 guy, lol.
As an actual basketball coach, here are my quick observations: (1) I question this "tryout". I wonder what level these guys as a whole played at, because tsome of them look like they played fraternity intramurals. They all play lazy, make critical mistakes on both ends, and are not polished players like you would expect from guys trying to become pros. (2) Jass is a good player for a pickup game, but let's get real. He cannot guard anyone, stands around, doesn't rotate. I played overseas and this guy would get eaten alive. Offensively he made some nice moves, but again, this looks like pickup ball. (3) I am 55, and I would probably hold my own against these guys... Should I 'tryout'???
Tristan is a damn good player but bear in mind he only ever got recruited by small naia schools which isn’t a knock that’s still better than 98% of players but understand there’s levels to this game. I think he would’ve been a great D3 player if he had gone that route.
@@infiniteheis Who can he stop on defense? Any 6'3'' white d3 guard would just shoot over him all day. My friend was Mr. Basketball for his state and played at Northwestern. @@kendob9642If I'm being honest, he's not even the most talented rec league style content creator, just one of the most popular. And even the ones that come to mind, I still wouldn't bet on them making a D1 roster, much less a G-League roster.
Tristan is a good player, no doubt. But G league is a bit high for him. I think he could compete in D2 with no problems. But his size would hold him back in D1. I think he is a D2 level player. He's sensational for his size.
He came to our gym and couldnt keep up with fiba pros and a couple d1 and d2 guys. Recorded his footage, lost 2 games in a row and left…that footage never came out
I always thought it would be cool video idea would be to take like 3-5 plays and get a group of scouts to evaluate all of the same plays separately and then show the play and then each of their takes on the plays and then at the end to come together and discuss why they may or may not agree or or what they thought about what the other scouts viewed as important but they didn’t.
Yes obviously he is not an NBA player but you just have to give him his due. He got an actual tryout with a professional team and he actually looked good, even if he isn’t good enough. He has heart, he plays hard, he has worked hard on his game. MANY people just aren’t gifted with height or the insane elite quickness of an Allen Iverson but still love basketball. Still amazing he got this far.
Finally, someone not glazing him like a Krispy Kreme donut. 😂 Once these young bucks get into that show-off basketball, it's not easy for them to play real ball.
I think big take aways were , push more defensively , better decisions in some shots , and get rid of the ball quickly if you being pushed too much , Also something i really liked he said in a counter attack at speed bounce/lob the pass . Im taking this notes for myself :)
Well spoken. For me it seems for smaller guards to make the league they need an aggressive defensive mentality or the wingspan and length to consistently play both sides of the ball. In my opinion thats why a lot of teams gave IT a shot but it just never made sense for those late season games or key moments.
Kids that are interested in playing college ball should watch this video to get an idea of what coaches/recruiters are actually looking at. Most kids think the only thing that matters is how many points they put up. There's a lot more going on than "buckets."
He’s more offensively strong than his defense. Defense is heart and grit, and I’m not trying to hate on this kid but he just looks like he’s just floating on the defensive end, and that honestly can be attributed to less confidence on D. Plus knowing how to play team D with help side takes experience. To show I’m not hating on him on offense he looks more assertive and confident thus playing better.
He is at the best place he could possibly be right now. TH-cam brings in a lot of money, likely more than an overseas career for an average undersized guard.
I was a bigger/slower point guard growing up - I HATED playing against quick pesky little guards! They were so dang quick and would never let you have a moment to breathe lol. I could post up on em all day though haha, but even then you gotta be careful cuz they're always swiping at the ball
Honest question, why would he ball pressure baiting a drive when your D isn’t back and set to help? The opposing team just came off a block. Am I wrong in saying that’s not logical and his choice to stop the ball and drive is the right choice.
ur right but his point is he should try to stand out on defense especially because of his size, he's only 5'8. For him to prove hes not a defensive liability he has to do extra unfortunately
You’re making a good point if you’re trying to win a game. I think his objective is to try to win the “eye” of the evaluators. From an evaluation standpoint it would be better if he pressured and then if defensive wasn’t set behind him then it looks bad on them unless he got beat point blank off the dribble. Playing it safe gets you nowhere when you’re 5’9. If he doesn’t pressure now there wouldn’t be reason for me to expect him to pressure naturally/consistently when he gets on a team. Hope this makes sense. Love this discussion
That''s an interesting take to be up in their face @ 5'9" right away, as a fellow 5'9" PG that had to cover guys that were 6'2" etc, I don't think you should be up in their face until they prove they can hit from the outside, b/c I know most can drive and make a layup, obviously the further they get in from the 3point arc to the basket the tighter you get, but way out there, tight, a good pick and hes gone...that being said, the in your face kind of defense does set you apart if your guy never gets the ball or shoots...very cool analysis...gave me something to think about defensively
At that height in the league, you have to be exceptional! He can definitely create his only shot, but he’s a defensive liability and a bit of a ball hog. He could possibly play overseas, but not NBA!
Nah the playstyle is even less suitable overseas. Same priniciples apply here if u are a small guard, you got to be a pest in defense even more so than in america
@@ericburton1244isn’t that was they said about Steph curry he too smalll a defensive liability and th only good defense dive point gu add is Chris Paul and jrue holiday
@@Goatfan2kyes and they were right for the most part. Steph wouldn’t be in the league if he wasn’t the best shooter to ever play and also as quick as he is. Those are the two things that keep him in the league cause he doesn’t do anything else as a great level. He’s also 6’2-6’4, so that’s kind of small for NBA, sure, but there’s a massive difference between being 6’2+ and being 5’8-5’9 like Tristan is
@@YouReallyDontKnow true but what matter is the type of value you bring as long as you bring some type of value to the team they can work with those weaknesses especially on Tristian has get acces to nba alike training regime
Great analysis. Re: your comment about his size being a liability, I'm curious do you think ideally a guy with his frame should put on maybe 10-15 pounds to compensate for the likely height mismatch? I read somewhere he's listed at 150 currently, and I feel like the slimmest PGs in the nba will still be 170+ right? I feel like he needs to be built like FVV to be able to create space around bigger guys
Physically, he needs much more than that. If he's serious about this, he'll need Steph Curry levels of work ethic just to make the G-League before he's 30.
I told people “defense” is the key. Nobody focuses on offense all day. You have to move your feet or your team will get blown out. People can make up on miss shots but defense gotta be on point.
Great breakdown bro. The only miss was the first break down after you wanted more pressure. That wasn’t his man that was open for 3. They playing man so T moved with his man to the top of the key as he’s supposed to. The bottom defender dipped into the paint off his man.
What he was saying is the play on offense created a need for a defensive rotation and Tristan should have seen it and rotated to the open man that made the 3. Man defense doesn't mean you guard one man from start to finish of the play. Your man assignment can change just like in a pick and roll against man defense.
Never said he had to stay with his man lol. There were 2 guys on his side of the court. He took the closest to him. The guy down low on the block never rotated out. If you look in the paint, there’s two guys in the paint. Neither of them leave the paint. What defense is that? Lol two guys staying in the paint? Lol
@@antgoods87 can you also make a video like this on how great offensive small guards (trae young, ish smith, kemba) attack and score against pro defenses? I had a college workout yesterday and even though I stood out defensively, I was still getting pressured into tovs and a little flustered on offense if a good defender was on me and I wasn't open enough to catch and shoot (which wasn't good for an offense that relied on me to score).
He’s not the first to be snubbed. My guy Gerald Walker college all American. Won two NBDL championships. More athletic than AI and Robert Pack. Cool to hear how you view things from a pro detail level. And I guess the weaknesses in Jass' defensive game make sense considering he plays mostly pick up ball
I find it a precise and timely analysis. I agree with every clarification and also the cautious tone on the future of this experience.

It's obvious the kid loves basketball. He also works his ass off. For that, Jass has my respect.

Great analysis man
If this dude wasn’t popular as a content creator, there’s no chance he could ever even get a look.
Tristan is just as good as all these other players what are you talking about
He actually looks like one of the better players at those tryouts.
This dude would never ever make an nba team or gleague. His social media following will be get him some consideration. Granted he is solid for a la fitness hooper an0d some other rec league but that’s where it stops.
@@MrMagnaniman they have open tryouts to get fees not to look for talent that’s not how it works.
I hope this kid makes a team. Every time I see him play he shows out.
now this is a good video idea well done !!!
Enjoyed your analysis. I would have liked to show this to my old team (I coached). Except TH-cam didn’t exist back then - haha
New Subscriber salute champ! great brake down!
@@Schorsch5 Yes but it generally favors taller people. If you're tall, you have a higher chance to make it as a pro, and that's a fact.
Sub 6ft nba players are the greatest athletes on earth. No one comes close.
All sports are "discriminatory" against people who are bad at them, as they should be, as all of life should be in every arena.
That was a great analysis, respect. Would love to see your takes on other youtube hoopers. 👌🏿
I’ll have some of that on the way. Which TH-cam hoopers do you think would be good to evaluate?

Hearing this analysis makes you realize just how good NBA players are. Btw, Tristan is super quick.
As an actual basketball coach, here are my quick observations:
(1) I question this "tryout".
The thing is you have to have so much talent at a smaller size for these teams to even look at you. Great breakdown
Tristan is a damn good player but bear in mind he only ever got recruited by small naia schools which isn’t a knock that’s still better than 98% of players but understand there’s levels to this game. I think he would’ve been a great D3 player if he had gone that route.
Bro is D2, Juco ready & really a D1 bench player. D3 is kinda offensive to him
@@infiniteheis Who can he stop on defense? Any 6'3'' white d3 guard would just shoot over him all day. My friend was Mr. Basketball for his state and played at Northwestern. He would have zero chance in the g-league and he started every game in the big 10 as a freshman. There are levels to this and this guy isn't even close.
@@infiniteheis that's some delusion my boy, Tristan is rec mens league ready
@@kendob9642If I'm being honest, he's not even the most talented rec league style content creator, just one of the most popular. And even the ones that come to mind, I still wouldn't bet on them making a D1 roster, much less a G-League roster.
Tristan is a good player, no doubt. But G league is a bit high for him. I think he could compete in D2 with no problems. But his size would hold him back in D1. I think he is a D2 level player. He's sensational for his size.
He’s a trick shot guy
Love this !
OMM at 40 I’m still giving him work.
Hope he sees this . Great analogy.
He came to our gym and couldnt keep up with fiba pros and a couple d1 and d2 guys. Recorded his footage, lost 2 games in a row and left…that footage never came out
Very well done!
That looked like a rec league game
He should have modeled his defensive game after John Stockton instead of James Harden.
You seem very fair. Very interesting and informative.
I think big take aways were , push more defensively , better decisions in some shots , and get rid of the ball quickly if you being pushed too much , Also something i really liked he said in a counter attack at speed bounce/lob the pass . Im taking this notes for myself :)
Wow so many things I never would notice
Nice video... I learned a lot
Cant wait how in two years u gonna be scouting me
You got this bro
it just shows that a lot of shorter players can play with pros but it's mainly defense that's holding them back
Good take 💯
He is at the best place he could possibly be right now. TH-cam brings in a lot of money, likely more than an overseas career for an average undersized guard.

Love the Tiger hat!
Thanks man!! Tiger is the man
I loved the video honestly, I'd love to ask you what would you love to see from an undersized power forward
No way Anthony Goods from Centennial? Man I lived in MoVal and used to go to your games when I was in elementary school lol crazy
I hope Tristen sees this videos and takes your constructive criticism at heart and works on his weaknesses, like ball pressure.
He couldn’t create his own shot in a pro league. Only against regular joes.
He isn't and will never be good enough to join the g-league. Get that through your head.
Physically, he needs much more than that. If he's serious about this, he'll need Steph Curry levels of work ethic just to make the G-League before he's 30.

Much appreciated!!
Lol
@@SheriffChuck81-qq5vq if you watch it again. The guy in red shorts was actually guarding my that man but stopped in the paint. That was his man for 3
