I have a fine gravel type of substrate so the mulm usually works its way to the bottom, I use it as fertilizer for my plants. I rarely vacum the gravel, I just clean the glass and do a partial water change and I'm good to go.

I made half baked attempts at sucking out mulm while siphoning water when I started out, but I haven't made any effort to remove mulm for many years. It doesn't seem to really build up into a layer anymore either. Maybe it's having better plant growth and shrimp and snails going through it and breaking it up. To be honest, after taking everything but ceramic pallets out of my filter I haven't cleaned any gunk out of there in many moons either. I have a lot of plants growing out of the water and I think that takes care of a lot of the nitrates and phosphate I guess.

  • @varanidguy

I typically clean mulm out as much as I can because letting it build up usually leads to unsightly algae for me, especially the BBA if it gets bad enough.
Also, I typically just say "Oh please, that's a load of mulm and you know it." lol

    • @TheWaterBox

You just do what you're doing. I'm not sure why it some back within days. That's a bit quick for mulm to build up unless your extremely overstocked.

I have alot of mulm, so much that the algae is devouring it and taking the spotlight away from my plants. I only let the mulm that's settled in places like the soil, but above that is MY TERRITORY.
