  • Small loans designed to lift people out of poverty. Microfinancing was supposed to help the world's poorest. So why do so many people say it's just making things worse?
It seems simple. Lend money to those wanting to build a business and help a struggling economy get on its feet. But the reality of microfinancing for some has been very different as people struggle with debt they can't pay back.

At the Roundtable was the socio-economist and author of 'The business of Doing Good', Anton Simanowitz; The founder of the Microloan Foundation, Peter Ryan; Anthropologist at the London School of Economics, Dr Jason Hickel; And Dr Kate Maclean from the London International Development Centre.
Roundtable is a discussion programme with an edge. Broadcast out of London and presented by David Foster, it's about bringing people to the table, listening to every opinion, and analysing every point of view. From fierce debate to reflective thinking, Roundtable discussions offer a different perspective on the issues that matter to you. Watch it every weekday at 15:30 GMT on TRT World.

Not all micro finance organizations are run like the Grameen Bank. How many grameen bank loanees kill themselves? Zero, it is the for profit micro finance in India and some other countries at fault. WB , AB, IMF gave billions in loans and took out billions as consulting fees , binding contracts forcing recipients to buy equipments from their preferred list.....these are the real problems. Muhammed Yunus never said micro finance is the only way to reduce poverty....one of the tools.

Without proper training and change of perspective on money, microfinance doesn't work

Micro-finance is not about giving people money but an opportunity. Money should be used as a means to access opportunity. When you understand that then you know that Micro-finance can work.

Microfinance isn't a solution to poverty but with proper advice it can be a life-jacket towards a better quality of life and self-esteem

The men are debating the pro's and con's of microfinance, meanwhile the lady is trying to make this discussion about women in business...

Having seen the issue from a global south perspective, I look at it as a stop-gap arrangement and one of handing over poor to the market. the sheer numbers are unimpressive and debt trap and usurpation of dignity is huge.

While world political leaders are not working hand in hand for reducing world poverty. At least Dr. Mohammad Younus tried to solve this as a general people. He had only intention to help poor woman not to become famous person neither for getting noble peace prize..

There is something I still don't get from microfinance. You give a loan to a poor pesant, let's say 50 USD, so he can open a business in his village, what kind of products will this person sell on his business? Rice, potatoes, beans...etc...just as the other 10000 million peasents, how this person will do some profit if so many people are selling just the same thing. I don't think that on a poor place like this you can produce a profitable business if all the rest of the people also are having problems making ends meet. Is like if I open a coffee shop but my possible customers can't afford even to pay a 1 usd cup of coffee.

Moderator: "What do you have to say over there on skype?"
Guy on skype: "I want to remind everyone that microfinance is not only about loans, it's also about..."
Moderator: "Yeah whatever, I have another question, why is the interest rate so high?"
Annoying-girl: "Because the woman are exploited because they get the loans but the microfinance bankers are men so that's not fair blah blah"
    Guy-smiling-all-the-time-when-saying-sad-things: "Something sad to say"

Okay here's the 101 of how to say something so it's being absorbed by the listeners. Don't say everything with a smile on your face. That's it. Class dismissed. am looking at you Jason Hickel. Even though I might agree with your understanding, but please don't get ahead of yourself mate. There are people who argue within the subject area, and people who contest the subject. Jason is the latter but really should have started with the former attitude. No matter what's his beliefs or convictions.

lmao the woman keeps saying the same thing over and over again, not contributing to this discussion in any positive way.
Yeah okay, 80% of micro loans clients are women, so what?
Also wtf why are they ignoring the skype dude? I feel like he had so much important to say. And the moderator seemed extremely passive aggressive lmao
