Since you asked, I've actually been playing Hearts of Iron for my whole life. My dad had Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday expansion, and he taught it to me and my younger brother when we were growing up. It was one of my formative gaming experiences. We would gather around in LAN parties playing together when my dad got days off or was at Liberty from deployment. We got Hearts of Iron 3 when it came out, but it was very different and complex (not to mention the map made your eyes bleed). My Dad was too busy to sit down and tank the learning curve and so couldn't teach us. And neither my brother nor my 11-year old self at the time was going to do it, so we lost interest. We'd occasionally boot up HoI2 every once and a while. I caught wind of HoI4 around when it came out while surfing TH-cam years later and started following its presence on the platform. I bought the game early, though honestly I was more enamored with the content creators than the game itself. Watching you and the other creators was so fun, I got to learn more about the game and find out about all the cool mods that I find more fun playing than the base game (Equestria at War best mod, fight me). My brother and I eventually got my Dad a copy of the game so we can play together like the old days, but unfortunally the game is so resource intensive that we can't really play far without it slowing down to an unplayable crawl. So until we can replace all the family potatoes, watching you guys keeps my interest alive!
Im trying my hardest to learn this game, used to play Stellaris all the time which was my first Paradox game. Blows Stellaris out the water for how complicated it is

One time TH-cam recommended me a HOI4 Meme. That lead to me watching more and more HOI4 memes. That lead me to the boy Alex The Rambler. The rest is self explanatory. I’m shit at the game but I love playing it.

That and I manually moved every division, because I didn't know about frontlines! I remember having 139 divisions in Moscow or something like that when I got encircled

So I started watching that and all of his other country series but never dreamt of starting to play myself cause it looked way to difficult. But over the summer that year I got bored cause of quarantine so I just bought the game and started playing, learning it on the go. Also watched more and more hoi4 on TH-cam just to learn how to play the game better and that's how I found Tommy and all the other big creators
I saw broken, ISP, and drew durnil and after watching one video from each I basically went, "this is the type of shit I've been looking for for years, and got it within an hour of seeing those videos
