    Another often overlooked mod source (except with the filter) is key tracking. You can mimic acoustic instruments with things like reducing sustain levels or increasing distortion/noise levels as you go up the keyboard. Or go the opposite way, increase sub oscillator levels as you go up the keyboard.

    Oscillator Sink is very knowledgable! i love his videos on these synths. I bought my wavestate back in January of 2020 and man was it a game changer, then I decided to get the Opsix and wow it is a Monstor synth. I decided to get the Modwave to complete the collection and build a 3 Tier synth stand and just get lost. VST versions are great but hands on control makes it more of an instrument and a joy to just turn on and play.

    How did you get that pad sound in the hipster segment? It didn't sound FM at all!

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not FM. The opsix isn't just an FM synth!
      I based this patch on what I showed here, where I built a Juno style synth on the opsix: th-cam.com/video/rUa_qK-XPJ4/w-d-xo.html
      For your interest, I've done similar here where I build a Buchla Music Easel: th-cam.com/video/ItCOr_izEWA/w-d-xo.html
      And a filter bank for string machine/fake vocoder sounds: th-cam.com/video/FS1xRJJhq0Q/w-d-xo.html
      The opsix is an incredibly powerful synth and I think Korg's biggest mistake was associating it with the DX7 lineage of FM - it's so much more than that!

    I feel like the resurgence of lofi has to do with the fact that we actually have good sounding digital instruments now. It completes the whole picture. For example, if I want to make a lofi beat I still want some good sounding drums, strings or wind instruments. A VST can easily take care of that, whereas previously drum computers were expensive and didn't sound true to life (which has its own charm now). But therein also lies the problem, most VSTs sound too clinical for my taste and style of music, so I have amassed an unhealthy collection of old and cheap FM synths from the 80s and 90s. When I say cheap I mean

    Your synth can't sound suck when it's powered off.

    I really hate the TH-cam thumbnail shock face pictures so much :( it’s at the point where I actively avoid watching videos or channels that use them. They’re ubiquitous and the worst!

    It really sucks that some scammers keep replying to our comments, trying to make us believe that it is Bo and that we’ve won a contest. TH-cam needs to fix this issue with extreme prejudice! 😜

    On a philosophical level I sometimes wonder whether there is some prosaïc mechanism at work. All great sounds, work and artists came into existence because the artist was the first one to get hold on a certain technological innovation. Like the VCS3 (Pink Floyd), the ARP (The Who) etc. After that there is no use trying to create breakthrough sounds on those synths. Hendrix was the first one with wah and fuzz, all fuzz and wah after that sounds like Hendrix. The only thing that matters is being the first one (and have a minimal degree of artistry (and a first class producer). The mortal rest of us better focus on recreating as faithfully as possible. Resetting our goals will give us peace of mind. Use yours synths for recreation only.

    Come on Bo, that was not great, just a mash-up of somebody else’s video? 😥

      The summer of synths event was all collaborations with other smaller channels - I made all of this content specifically for this video (and Bo paid the creators for their time).

      Like Osc said, for the second summer in a row I’ve invited guests to my channel. We worked on the videos together and it was all for two reasons: giving my audience something fun to watch while I am on vacation and to promote smaller channels. I understand if its not clear since videos can pop up randomly in your feed.

      These tips are gold. I far prefer technique videos to product reviews, and Oscillator Sink is an incredible mentor. Thank you, Boscillator.
