So lovely to see Richard. The calmest cows you’ll see! Such a nice herd you and your brother have. No shouting or balling to come for milking. Just happy, comfy cows. They and the farm are a credit to your family.

Well done Richard and Harry brings back memories of when I use to milk my dad in a abreast milking parlour some nearly 50 years ago and I'm still milking cows now but in a herringbone parlour, unfortunately father passed away nearly 20 year ago now and I still miss him every day, keep up the good work you two we are a dying breed.

That sound of the milking machines in action takes me back. Harry's doing really well with milking. I remember I was a bit taken back when I first started milking making sure I didn't do anything wrong, but the parlour I worked in was all computerised. Your parlour looks a lot more straightforward Richard. Crack on 💪🏻🚜

That type milking setup was the norm years ago before the standard side by side parlour took over, Harry will most likely build a sixteen unit parlour or install a robot if he decides to remain farming

    Top job Harry
My first Job when I left school before I went to college was milking in a 4 stall bale parlour but they didn't have steps they were on the same level as me so was back breaking luckily they only had about 40 cows I took over the job from the owners sister who they forced to retire she was in her 80s I was there for two and a half years until I went to college my first job post college was a huge step up 400 cows three times a day milking in 24/24 herringbone bit of a contrast team of 5 herdsman on split shifts 4 to 12 or 12 to 10

Reminds me of my school age milking, always be aware of the raising tail, when that happened to me I was not allowed back into the house until nan washed us down with the hose pipe, fine in summer but freezing in the winter

Hi Richard, well done on training up the next generation of farmers and well done Harry for being a model student no need to ask what Harry wants to do when he’s finished college but what I would say is do your best at school get your a levels and then go to agricultural college and maybe go and work for someone else for a while before you come home to work it’s always good to see how someone else does the same job you learn different ways of doing the same job not so much as right and wrong just different ways to do the same thing crack on and good luck.

when we were milking and we had a farm assurance visit ........one of the questions they would ask was what your teat preparation was and they always expected the farmer to say i always strip out some milk from each quarter to make sure the milk is good, i'm surprised at how few farmers actually do that........the milking parlour is the main source of how mastitis spreads from one cow to another

  • @JimF500

Tbh that is an old school parlour but one thing you have is allowing any one to go and not the rest. Not exactly a necessity but can be very handy at times and not even the most modern parlours can do that

Has Harry tried milking by hand, as a 13/14-year-old I would visit my uncles market garden and my cousin, and I would milk a neighbors two cows by hand as he was poorly. Then my first job was on a dairy farm that milked 300 twice a day. Later in life I milked a goat for a good friend.
Good to see the lad getting stuck in and even not minding the splatter gun, shame cows can't be trained to time the poo's better. Or is it a reaction to being milked.
