I've got about 150 pages left in Revival and I'm still making progress in Executive Orders. This last week has been a rough one. My wife was just diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive type of ovarian cancer on Thursday. So Mike, I just wanted to say thank you for being a small light during these dark times. Always look forward to your videos
Man I am so sorry to hear this. We've had a few scares and it has been terrifying. Can't imagine how it would go if it came back with bad news. Sending up prayers for you guys.
A Cliffs note version of Salem’s Lot is a perfect way to describe it. I am curious, when Stephen King said it was a classic slow burn, did he watch the same cut as us? The set up for the scenes were all fantastic but the scenes didn’t last long enough to build any tension or dread. The editing was good, so good that I can’t tell if the scenes were supposed to be longer. But were they? It’s just weird that we got nearly every major plot beat from the novel into a not even two hour film. I just don’t see why anyone would write a screenplay like that unless it was meant to be longer.
Here....we.....goooooo. :) Thanks Mike! I love the content man. My October Reading List: 1) Dreams Of The Dying by Nicolas LieTzau 2) The Road by Cormac McCarthy 3) Somethinf Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury 4) Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons 5) Summer Of Night by Dan Simmons 6) The Alienist by Caleb Car 7) Tales of Horror by H.P. @mikesbookreviews Thanks Mike, I am looking forward to some less than 300 page books in-between the 800 + paged books. November will be awesome.....Malazan the book of the fallen... here... I come. I really enjoyed Brian Lee Durfees excitement towards Malazan when he reviewed them. Cool guy. ✌️ 🤘 -JRoot
Glad to hear your mostly positive thoughts on Kingfisher! I think you should try out What Moves the Dead next ;) And very great idea with the horror for beginners video, I will be keeping my eyes peeled for that!
A successful true-to-the-book adaptation of Salem’s Lot would need to have a director who understood that the atmosphere of the story is on equal grounds with Barlow and the emerging vampires. “Halloween”wasn’t successful just because Michael Meyers was a great boogyman, but the silent atmosphere of foreboding surrounding the fateful day/night that Carpenter created.
Thanks for the update! I just found out that Robert McCammon's novel Stinger is coming to Peacock this October as a series. The show's been renamed "Teacup" for ... reasons, but I may have to sign up for Peacock to binge it. The cast looks good (Yvonne Strahovski & Scott Speedman) & I hope McCammon's publisher finds a way to push a tie-in paperback.
YES - I knew that's how you'd feel about The Hollow Places! I felt the same way, honestly. The jokes didn't really land for me either, even if they weren't misplaced. I was pretty confused when people suggested it for you!
Read: 'Children of Dune' by Frank Herbert (reread) Reading: CoD should finish today still deciding on next read: 'Salems Lot' reread, continuing Dresden Files, or reading a Caitlin R. Kiernan collection Watching: Megalopolis, Joker 2, Salem's Lot (2024), Australian Football Grand Final, The Penguin, lots of reality/game shows Listened: lots of recent releases finally getting to: Billie Eilish, Nails, Satan, and more Playing: back and forth between Civ VI, Fallout 4 (replay with DLC) and Lumines
I’m reading ‘salems lot currently, and it’s my first SK book and horror story. It’s definitely a slow burn for sure, and the aura around the Marsten House is very real. The whole time I’ve been thinking ‘WTF is going on with this house man?’
I was hoping to reread Salems' Lot before watching the movie, but there's so much else I wanna get to this month. Currently reading historical thriller-horror, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Beautiful writing and atmospheric setting in middle Europe (the hunt for Dracula) but sloooow. She likes to describe each tree and blade of grass
My first spooky season book is Skeleton Crew by King, honestly a very mixed bag of short stories, some are amazing and some are just ok. I plan on reading House of Leaves, Swan Song and Night shift as well. If I have time I’ll do boys life as well. I’ve had all these on my shelf forever now so I think I’m in for a great month of reading
I plan on watching the Salems Lot movie and want to read the book. Right now, I'm reading The Witchwood Crown. You should check out the Lesser Dead by Christopher Beuleman....vampires, sex, violence, in the city...the audiobook is done well with NY accents....there's a twist. I will check out All the Feinds of Hell based on your recommendation.
Hey Mike! My girlfriend and I are co-reading Best Friend's Exorcism together thanks to your review of it, we're blasting through it in 3 days we are diggin it, she's never read a horror novel before! She'll move onto Salem's Lot after and I'm picking up Black Mouth by Ronald Malfi.
Been copying your reading this week! Read Hollow Places, liked the concept and the relationship between the 2 main characters, agree the willow world should have been in it more. That made me want to read The Willows so blew through that in a night and saw how much it inspired Hollow Places. Just over halfway through All the fiends of hell and enjoying it, feel like I don’t read many books set in England (where I’m from) with English terms! I mostly read secondary worlds or books set in America
I've started my spooky season as well. I've read a short story by my friend Alexander Almeida, called "Ele" (it's Brazilian) and I've read about 1/3 of Bad Brains, by Kathe Koja. It's fine so far, but not as good as I was expecting. I'll stick to it, though, and I definitely think it has enough time to get great. And yeah, I'd really like that "Horror for Beginners" video! I don't think I'm necessarily part of the target audience, in the sense that I'm looking more into drowning myself in horror than dabble in it, but I'm sure I'll find some interesting books to add to my list nonetheless
Currently reading the warrior prophet about 4 chapters in And I'm liking where it's going so far. I am also reading Something wicked this way comes And I gotta say Bradbury is a master storyteller
I plan on playing little nightmares 1&2 as well as the dead space remake this month if I can. I have something wicked this way comes so I’ll start reading that closer towards Halloween. I love fall🍂🍁🎃
If you're disappointed in T. Kingfisher's lack of commitment to the horrors, maybe Our Share of Night, by Mariana Enriquez will be more to your tastes. The book is about weird rituals & cults, but it also works as historical fantasy, & she's an unsympathetic horror writer who pulls no punches - if that's what you're looking for. Her short story collections are worth reading as well.
I completed 3 books this week, and I'm on cruise control on the next book. I actually just finished watching the new Salem's Lot. Seeing Euron Greyjoy almost took me out of it. LOL. It was a decent adaption, yet the O.G. Salem's Lot is still my favorite. I was 10 when it came out. The window scenes still give me chills.
Well, it looks like I'm reading some adam neville. Was rereading IT for the 4th time because of a reading slump. King is best for reading slumps. So here goes. Thanks mike
I read the exorcist, and house by frank peretti and Ted Dekker this week. Neither were very scary for me and I just feel like nothing is scary these days. I'm on a ten week wait to read Salem's lot from the library. I'm fixing to start They came from the ocean by Boris bacic today. And then I have two volumes of h. P. lovecraft stories on hold as well. I'm looking for more scifi horror right now.
I read Cormac's The Road graphic novel and watched the first episodes of the Uzumaki anime. A bit disappointed with the first and very surprised with the later. Also, i think you should watch When Evil Lurks from Shudder.
Yeah I thought it was a good popcorn movie or date night movie. But as King fan it drove me nuts to see all the changes to the character backstories, and I wasn’t a fan of what they did to Father Callahan.
My Next t Kingfisher book will be the twisted ones. I've heard It has some folk horror elements. I still remember the first chapters of all The fiends of hell, very good at making you feel like you are under the red Sky. It felt very lovecraftian but also very original. I liked It was not the classic end of the world story. Hope you finish It before You hear the bells...
How about a review of Terrifier 3? I saw the finale of 2 and it scarred my soul. Depraved set of movies, actually. I can't believe people enjoy these type of movies. It's like a car wreck though, i couldn't help but watch.
I think the only thing I finished reading this week was The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C. S. Lewis. It was good, but not my favorite. I read about 15% of Boy’s Life by Robert McCammon and really enjoyed it, but took a break for reasons that I’m not sure.
I felt the same way t kingfisher when I read one of the other books by her. I don't recommend her. That is her style of writing horror is to crack jokes and the one I read was like fart jokes at the height of horror scenes. So she's in my never again list.
I found Salem's Lot book boring and not scary at all. Read it twice, when I was around 20 and then last year (30yo) to see if my opinion would change. It didn't change. I found vampires in this movie terrifying, the scene with Callahan in the kitchen while being very short got me goosebumps. That being said, this should've been a miniseries to get us invested more into the characters. Still far better than the book.
If you don't like T. Kingfisher breaking the tension, you're not going to like any of her books, because she does that incessantly. Really nothing in a T. Kingfisher book is cultivated effectively, but that's a whole other can of worms.
The weekend & week will be all about my NY Mets in the playoffs, Jets vs. the Vikings and opening day of hockey season…🤔books may to take a back seat.⚾️🏈🏒
Salem's Lot should have been a 10 episode limited series like the Chapelwaite show which was based on Jerusalem's Lot.
No doubt. Felt super rushed.
Great idea, with the Horror for Beginners. Love it!
I'm hoping so!
I've got about 150 pages left in Revival and I'm still making progress in Executive Orders.

I haven't read very much horror so I would really appreciate the "Horror for Beginner's" video!

From what I've heard, they filmed almost 6 hours and cut it down to just under 2. Hope we get a director's cut one day.
Making my way through Ashes of Man. Thanks for getting me into that series

I wanted to do a Fallout 4 replay with the upgraded version that just released. Kids won't get off of my Xbox.
T. Kingfisher had a really good book that released earlier this year, it’s called A House With Good Bones, try that one next, I enjoyed it so much.
I'll check it out!
I’m reading ‘salems lot currently, and it’s my first SK book and horror story. It’s definitely a slow burn for sure, and the aura around the Marsten House is very real. The whole time I’ve been thinking ‘WTF is going on with this house man?’
