      The problem is, the VAST majority of people that give formula do so out of vanity. While your case is certainly perfectly correct, it is extremely rare to have a genuine case such as that. And unfortunately formula will never be a match, or even close, to the real thing.

      @Picolas Cage First of all, caffeine in coffee comes from the coffee bean which is natural.
      Second, both caffeines are the same thing. They have the same chemical composition; just in different amount where caffeine in an apple is smaller than in a coffee.
      Lastly, natural does not mean safer. Poison and venom are natural and they are not safe for human.

Did you know that doctors used to go directly from surgeries to baby deliveries without even washing their hands? Until one day some smart guy said that microscopic organisms are what's causing diseases and by washing your hands you can dramatically improve the survival rate of babies and mothers in birth? Do you know what they did to this man? They took away his medical license and put him in a mental institution where he eventually killed himself because these other quack job doctors refused believe that they were responsible for so many child/mother related deaths and illnesses. Sure enough very shortly after this hero's death, these frauds realized he was right and hospitals employed his methods which saw something like a 90% decrease in incidents.

      Technically if you spoke with the same doctor, you could have checked to see if you could have done it. Because men have the same capacity to breast feed. In fact some men could breast feed without any outside influences, since some young males and even adult males can lactate. It means if you truly wanted to go natural. My wife was 43 when she gave birth and our daughter took a few months to learn how to latch on; she lost so much weight after her birth that the midwives were getting concerned so we had to feed her every 3 hours night and day. Without formula she would have had to go back into hospital. It also gave me the opportunity to let my wife sleep through the night and to bond with my daughter - very precious memories. Once she latched on, she breastfed until she was about 2 years old. Now a very healthy and well balanced 14 year old. :)

I am just as healthy as my siblings, I just finished a degree and I love my mother as much as anyone. You did the best you could with the circumstances you were given relax.

    • @katehopper8509
      @katehopper8509 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Birdie I am so glad that you stopped trying to breast-feed. You can still find articles online from a few women whose children died of starvation, all because they wanted to do the "right thing" and breastfeed. They are now invested in the 'fed is best' movement. Any doctor will tell you all the ways that breast milk is superior to formula. They have learned this in medical school, yet few have probably read the actual research studies. These studies are flawed and not of high quality to begin with because they are not "controlled" and do not take into account differences between the mothers who breastfeed and bottle feed. When good controlled studies are done, they show only slight benefits to breastfeeding, meaning it is probably worth giving a try but not anywhere near as great as one might think. Formula will not make your kid sicker, prone to leukemia, lower IQ, ADHD, obese, poorly-attached, etc, etc. The research does suggest that your kid might have a slightly higher risk of eczema and 1 more GI infection per year than a breastfed baby... big deal, right? Anywhere from 5-15% of moms produce inadequate milk supply. The main thing is that you adapted quickly and kept your kid from starving to death. My mom's generation was (mostly) bottle-fed with less sophisticated formulas than what we have today. That was what was PUSHED then just like breastfeeding is PUSHED now... I haven't seen any research that the baby boomers are sicker, dumber, or more obese because of it.

My husband had nutritional supplements as a kid, and is still smaller than his siblings (and was quite small for his age until around college). The thing that matters MOST is that baby getting enough nutrition, and you did exactly what you should have as a mother by making sure yours did. That's a parents job and you did it, there's nothing to feel bad about.

    Important reasons someone may use formula: single dad, a same-sex male couple, not producing enough milk, producing too much milk, physical issues, mental health issues allergies, etc. I follow a mom on TikTok who had postpartum depression and because of that she rarely ate and lost a dramatic amount of weight. This led to her underproducing so she had to use formula in order to ensure her daughter would not suffer from malnutrition.

      Every woman that has a baby makes milk. Premise are usually formula fed in the beginning and mom has to pump and stimulate the milk to mature faster. But most mothers of preemies arent given the right information and so they think that they never make milk. Hell, I know a girl that had a premature stillborn baby and she still had milk. Formula companies rely on misinformation and discouraging mothers to breastfeed. It's perfectly safe and acceptable to use (and I use some in emergencies) so dont think I'm looking down on you or your mother. I'm just giving you some info so you know going forward.

    Actually this video is based on incomplete information. Yes, formula can be safe, but breastfeeding (if you can) is actually better in that it provides passive immunity to the baby, whose immune system isn't developed yet. This means the baby receives the mother's antibodies, which can protect it better from things like the flu, a disease that can actually be dangerous to young children.

      I think what they were referring to was the damage done by corporations (looking at you, Nestle) pushing baby formula in developing countries where that is a real concern. Some of those marketing campaigns, and the resulting replacement of breastfeeding with unsafe formula use, were blamed for the deaths of millions of babies in the 1970s. That's seldom an issue in developed countries, but probably some "breast is best" lactivists have cited those cases to portray formula itself as evil. But they didn't explain it well at all.

    It's absolutely true that formula isn't poison. It's an excellent alternative to breast milk and saves lives. I'm with you so far. Where I disagree, is with the insinuation that there's basically no difference between breast milk and formula. This sort of video makes breastfeeding sound like a personal choice, or even a luxury, that confers no benefits to families, babies, or society, that formula does not. In fact, there are advantages to breastfeeding. For one thing, it develops a baby's immunity (which is not mentioned at all in this video). A mother passes her antibodies to her baby through breast milk, and when a baby has an infection, his or her mother produces the specific antibodies to help him or her fight the infection. Another HUGE advantage to breast milk is that it's FREE, while formula is expensive (and can be VERY expensive if a baby requires a special sort of formula). Unfortunately, lower income families are more likely to use formula than wealthier families, in large part because low income and single moms usually have to go back to work very shortly after having their babies. Politicians have little incentive to push for paid maternity leave, and employers have little incentive or public pressure to accommodate pumping, in part because so many people think breastfeeding isn't really all that important--that formula is an absolutely equal alternative (an idea this video reinforces). That means people with less money end up spending a lot of what they earn on formula. Last point: formula, most of which is essentially fortified cow's milk, is causing the same level of environmental destruction as anything else requiring intensive animal agriculture (so, a lot of destruction). Breast feeding obviously causes no more damage than just the mother continuing to exist and to eat only slightly over her regular calorie intake (also considerable destruction, but less, and she was going to exist regardless of how she fed her baby, obviously).
    I think the intention of this video is in the right place. In general we should not judge other people for the choices they make when they're doing the best they can. When you see a mom formula feeding, you have no idea what her circumstances are. Maybe it's extremely painful for her to breastfeed (horror stories about shooting pains and bleeding nipples absolutely exist). Maybe she's had a mastectomy for health reasons and CAN'T breastfeed. Maybe her baby was born prematurely and couldn't latch. Maybe her milk simply didn't come in. Maybe her baby has a rare intolerance or metabolic disorder and needs special formula to survive. Maybe she had to go back to work shortly after giving birth to make ends meet and her office doesn't support pumping. Maybe she adopted or is fostering the baby. Whatever her reason, it's her prerogative to choose what she feels is best for her child, and the child will be fine regardless, as long as he or she has a loving care-giver. But to imply that there's fundamentally no difference between breastfeeding and formula is not accurate, and it's not helpful to all the women wanting to breastfeed but not managing because they lack the support.

      Yeah they didn't mention the anti-bodies at all. Also the fact that formula has effects on babies' life long eating habits. Whereas breast milk helps the babies experience new flavors, helping them be more open to trying new foods later on.
      Also prior to formula, there were still options if a woman couldn't breastfeed, they had wet nurses back then.

      Stars Bars Many scientists have documented and also state that one of the main reasons why breastfeeding is better is because human milk helps the baby's immune system in the first few months against sicknesses.
      In terms of nutrients, they are the same but breastfeeding is still the better option because it protects the baby from sicknesses.

    Formula is a fine and great alternative, but there’s definitely advantages of breast milk and some differences between the two. Breastfeeding will provide antibodies, enzymes, growth factors, and several other benefits. If you can breastfeed, it’s definitely the best option, but yes, formula is safe and your kid will be fine if they drink formula.

      Exactly, Even Though, I do enjoy watching Adam "Ruining" everything like he usually does, this episode appeared to be unchracteristically optimistic, and extremely biased towards an option, and that option specifically, and even though I agree with most of the facts presented in the video, they seemed a bit too cherry-picked to cater to improving the brand image of milk formula, instead of displaying all of the facts, and information in as an important showcase of faith, like they usually do. Which would include facts pertaining, and or relating to the amount of anitbodies, enzymes, and other factors inside breast-milk , that can massively influence the various growth factors, which makes me wonder if they were paid off behind the scenes by nestle, or some other milk formula related corporations?

      I remember a decade back, when they weren't using scare tactics, everyone would just ignore those pro-breastfeeding advocates and carry on with formula, even if they are perfectly capable of breastfeeding, because it's more convenient (or lazy, depending on who you ask).
      To make more people listen, they did somehow exaggerated the claims, hence, we now have formula shaming. I think it's a terrible tactic, but no one knows who started it, but it did spread like a gossip and only got worse as it was passed along to others.
      If you are perfectly capable of breastfeeding and have been given sufficient maternity leave, you should do breastfeeding. If you're not capable of breastfeeding, you should not force yourself and just go with formula instead instead of starving your kid to death

What about babies who lose their mothers during, or shortly after birth?

    My son (who is 11 months) has to be bottle fed. It was our choice, but it happen to be he was lactose intolerant, hyper allergic, and needed a boost in food from losing weight. Formula saved his life. We are using a liquid gold formula that is only prescribed.

    I used to be very against formula until I had trouble with breast feeding my son. Trying for 4 months, stressful feeds, latch troubles, not bonding with him, and then finding a large lump that shouldn't have been there and couldn't be explored until I had dried up, I switched him to formula. The feedings got easier, he thrived, I wasn't having anxiety attacks about making sure he was getting enough to drink, we finally started bonding, I was able to get the lump biopsied (benign yay!)...
    A lactation consultant told me that there's nothing cuddly about bottle feeding when I had latch issues with my 2nd kid and was considering using a pump. I pumped and bottle fed my girl for 15 months and we cuddled just fine.
    The most important thing is that the baby is getting fed and the mother isn''t suffering.

    Adding to the already excellent examples both in the video and in the comments, I showed this video to my mom and talked to me about how she breast-fed me for the first 3 weeks, but because I was a large baby (9lbs at birth) she couldn’t make enough milk for me to be full, so she supplemented with formula. So, you can add large infants to the list of people who benefit from formula, alongside mothers who can’t breastfeed, foster parents, adoptive parents, working moms, single dads, premature infants whose mothers haven’t started producing milk yet, and everyone else who benefits.

      I do feel we should probably not be shaming mother's when they do use formula. My mom was among the 15% mentioned. She wanted to but she couldn't breastfeed me. I had to use formula when my daughter was a newborn for 2 main reasons. 1) she spent a week in the NICU and got used to the ease of the plastic nipple. 2) I produced too much milk and would choke her when she would try to feed. :( so I am super glad this clears things up for the people who are polarized on this topic (if they will watch it).

    We just had a baby via surrogacy and spent a lot of time debating whether we should ask our surrogate to pump for us (she was willing to) or just use formula. We watched a ton of videos like this one and came to the conclusion that breast milk may or may not be better than formula (passing along antibodies, easier to digest, etc), but nobody is saying breast milk is WORSE than formula. So for us, we went the breast milk route on the off chance it's actually better for our daughter, though formula seems to be a perfectly fine default option, and nobody should be shamed if they use it.

According to my mom's doctors (when I was a baby, I know it's a while ago) it's better to breastfeed if your healthy and able to. I suggest you talk to a doctor to get more accurate and more updated advice.

    Ok, As a doctor I feel like I need to throw in my two cents. While what this video says is correct for the most part, they forget that breast milk contains immunoglobulins, which aren't there in formula feeds. Immunoglobulins are immune system derived chemicals that we have circulating in our body that protect us from pathogens (Bacteria, virus, etc). A child does not have a fully developed immune system and while a child develops its immune system, maternally derived immunoglobulins in the breast milk protect them. So while formula feeds are okay to use if situation mandates it, breast milk is definitely better overall. Also, mothers who would like to shed a pound or two after delivery, can think of breastfeeding as an adjunct method of weight-loss post partum. Congratulations to all the new moms out there who might chance upon this comment. :)

      (for people who dont want to click the link)
      Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the first line of defense against pathogens that invade humans from mucosa. Immunoglobulin (IgM) is the first reactive antibody in response to exposed antigens. Mothers deliver their IgA and IgM to their babies from breast milk, but not from placenta. We attempted to describe the ontogeny of these two antibodies in infants with bottle feeding. IgA can be detected in serum, saliva and feces of newborns their first day of life. There are similar findings in IgM from neonatal serum and saliva. Infants produce these two immunoglobulins rapidly after delivery, not only those fed with breast milk, but also those fed with formula milk. Furthermore, serum and fecal IgA may have a higher increment and levels in bottle fed as compared with breastfed babies in their first few months of life. In some studies, level of saliva IgM is also higher in infants fed with formula milk. Such phenomenon may be induced by diverse environmental antigens and flora colonization from formula milk. Some probiotics in formula milk have been proven to enhance the maturation of the mucosal secretory IgA system. After understanding the ontogeny of neonatal IgA and IgM and the different responses between breast and bottle feeding, we can make an effort to explore the factors which induce the discrepant immune responses between breast and formula milk. Formula feeding may induce higher serum, fecal IgA and saliva IgM concentrations than breast feeding in response to environmental antigens and flora colonization. Breast feeding may protect early antigen loading in early infancy.

      Victor M As an actual physician, I advise you to study more and interact with more patients. You better have a reasonable excuse for not breastfeeding. Breastfeeding provides long lasting passive immunity, antibodies and healthy skin flora during the skin contact time between mother and child. Human breastmilk has evolved as perfect for brain development. A good pediatrician or OBGYN would always educate mothers about breastfeeding.

    • @adri76ify
      @adri76ify 7 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Screw you. A woman doesn't need an excuse for why she doesn't want to breastfeed. A simple "because I didn't want to" is perfectly okay. How dare you dictate how a woman used her body? And no breastfeeding does not provide long lasting passive immunity. It only last as long as breastfeeding and babies don't need breast milk to receive immunity and antibodies. Their own bodies produce antibodies and they get important antibodies in the womb. Healthy skin flora? What? You think bottle feeding mothers don't do skin to skin, touch, hold, kiss their babies?

    • @theywalkinguptoyouand4060
      @theywalkinguptoyouand4060 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      adri76ify A woman has the right to do what she wants with HER body bit when there is a child involved, she should stop being stupid and selfish. Women today are so selfish spouting out garbage like what you said.
      Placental antibodies are only IgG. Breastfeeding provides IgA, lactoferrin, and other components that stimulate LONG TERM immunity.
      I've only seen your cherrypicking of information and "a woman can do what she wants" sort of selfishness in people who don't vaccinate. You dont want to take care of your child, dont get knocked up.
