    Steve: what a clear and concise guide to Iceland for overlanders! This should be promoted and released to the TH-cam viewing public. Can't wait for the next one! Cheers

    I wish I had seen this video before my campervan trip there in early September 23. I wouldn't have gotten the so-called "stone damage insurance".
    One other thing not mentioned in this video is the price of petrol and the fact that you have to pay before pumping. The price was 320 ISK ( 3.70 AUD) Per litre, which was more expensive than in Australia. And you have to swipe your card before pumping, and approx $300 will be deducted from your credit card. You then pump, the correct amount will then be taken from that 300 and the rest returned to your account 2 days later. So watch out for that.

      That's a good point. Here in the UK the self-service petrol pumps have been doing that for a while - they take a hold on £100 and then return it after the payment for the actual amount you pumped goes through. So I didn't really think much about it in Iceland

    Stokksnes - oh my goodness! Thank you for that sir. I'm going to Iceland in 2 weeks time, and now I'm watching all these videos about places worth visiting. Nobody's ever mentioned Stokksnes, and it looks simply amazing. Definitely gonna visit it. Cheers

    Love the information. We are planning on visiting next September 2023. We hope to rent an rv for a few days and visit the south side of Iceland. Then do our cruise around the north side. Thank you for sharing

      Hope you have a great time. We rented our 4x4 from a camper rental company. I did notice that as we waited, people came in picking up campers and each got to collect the folding chairs and tables I assume they had paid for. The last person ended up with a pretty poor range of partly broken tables and chairs to pick from. So getting to the rental company early might be an advantage if they handle extras that way.

    And prices in the UK are expensive too into the hotels in specially in touristic areas...

    • @SteveSallyandSmokey
      @SteveSallyandSmokey  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes they are, although just checking the prices in September in Ambleside in the Lake District against prices for the same nights in Iceland still shows Iceland hotels to be significantly more expensive. And what I found when booking was that there were fewer options for budget hotels in Iceland once you excluded back-packer style with shared bathrooms

    We're planning a first time trip to Iceland in late September for 10 full days not including arrival and departure days. We plan to do the ring road and I'm curious if you pre-booked your accommodations or simply booked on the go? I'm concerned if we pre-book, we will have to rush too much just to make it to our room for the night. Great and Informative video...thank you.

    • @SteveSallyandSmokey
      @SteveSallyandSmokey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Greg. We pre-booked. There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of accommodation, at least if you want en-suite, and I found many were running short of availability quite a few months in advance. I suspect tour companies and those organising fly-drive, pre-book a lot of accommodation - so I think it is safest to work out an itinerary and get accommodation booked based upon that. I also booked on booking.com and ensured I could cancel up to a week or so before in case I decided to change my plans (although I only made 1 such change). That means you can get some bookings in place early, then as you refine your plans you have the option to change them, but at least you won't be stuck with nowhere to stay

    • @SteveSallyandSmokey
      @SteveSallyandSmokey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The other consideration is that if you prebook you know you can turn up late at the hotel because you are guaranteed a bed. If you don't, you could find yourself rushing so you can turn up early enough to drive around looking for accommodation.

    Let's not exagerated...Bonus prices are the same as UK,so not much difference for groceries shops than UK

    • @SteveSallyandSmokey
      @SteveSallyandSmokey  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With the recent inflation, supermarket prices in the UK are now not far short of the prices in Iceland in September 2022 when this video was recorded. So the prices I was talking about in the video were during more normal economic times and reflected the usual higher prices in Iceland. I'm not sure if Iceland prices have increased in line. I hope UK supermarket prices will return to their old values, and if they do then I expect the differential in Icelandic prices experienced in 2022 to return.

    Disagree: sometimes you need to pay local farmer who gives you access to hot springs on his land .

    • @SteveSallyandSmokey

      One of the main reasons we took cash was because I knew I would need it for the honesty box at Hrunalaug hot springs. However, nice as it would have been to do that spring, we ended up not having time. But yes, there are a number of these and having some cash would be useful in those situations
