Ferrari FF Common Faults and Repairs (GTC Lusso) 10 Year Edition

  • I go over all of the items I see on every FF (and thereby GTC Lusso) as they hit the 10 year mark. Use this video when doing a used car purchase to check for these items. These items will apply to the F12 and 812 also, except no PTU.
    If you need any parts for these cars, we stock all these items and have the ability to expedite shipping. We stock 3 cars worth, but they still sell out when factory back orders occur. PTU and DCT parts are always in stock.

    I am the proud owner of the satin black project car in this video and it’s been a lot of fun talking about all the mods which I think will be very popular with other FF and GTC4 owners. The battery issues alone cause so many faults that frustrate owners because they don’t know what causes the problems. That relocation kit is a smart investment. Micah is fast becoming the truthsayer for v12 Ferraris. There is a lot to demystify and even Ferrari dealers are on their back feet on many of these topics. The dealer doesn’t always know best.

    Purosangue reviews got me thinking about FF and GTC Lusso, both the sort of Ferrari I would enjoy. Watching this, and comparing the standard of engineering with my 150k mile 911 964 Carrera 4 (from 1989), has been truly eye-opening. Thank you!

    Finding this channel is a godsend…. I was getting dangerously close to pulling the trigger on a Lusso T but I don’t think I’m ready for the maintenance requirements. I had a 2012 BMW 650i with the n63 engine and the constant issues, downtime, and crazy parts prices drove me nuts… I knew my mechanic far too well lol… my Porsche mechanic on the other hand never remembers my name… I’ll take that as a sign 😂

    Big fan of Micah! He knows his stuff. I was the owner of the white FF. I sold it earlier this year. It was a great car to me and Micah took the time to explain the maintenance options and other information about the car. If I still had it I would definitely take it to him.

    I have an E60 M5 which is quite notorious as well. However, like the FF if you know the car inside out and take some extra cash to adress all the issues they can be a dream. I missed an opportunity on an FF last year. Maybe one day! At least I know what to keep in mind

    This kind of made me want a GTC4Lusso even more. I was under the impression that all of the good builders who can help with the PTU and 4WD were in England. Guess that is what I deserve for only watching other YT vids and reading reddit threads.
    I was looking at GTCs on the East Coast and was going to start asking about the service history, but it seems the best is to just send it to you as a preventative maintenance? How long would the PTU last after the fix?
    A dealer I spoke with joked I should just buy two PTUs along with the GTC if I plan to put 10K+ miles on it. Guess he wasn't wrong.

    do you have info yet for the battery relocation kit? parts and labor cost? Since trunk is much cooler, is it ok (do you recommend) using Anti Gravity after the relocation?

    • @HollywoodMechanic
      @HollywoodMechanic  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@waaan_ I have all the parts for the battery relocation ready but I haven't sold any that I did not install due to the risk of grounding the positive wire if the install is not done correctly. Not sure if I'll sell the entire kit or just the brackets to replace the battery in the front and tie down the battery in the rear. Find my company on Google and message us and we can get you those parts. The truck panels we will not offer because of different cars came with different rear trunk panels. The best thing for that is to go to an upholstery shop and let them just make the panels custom. It would probably be cheaper than buying at our cost and shipping them and they can cover them in whatever material best matches your car. As far as lithium ion, most technicians at the dealers do not like them, as errant faults are often in control modules due to unexpected voltage variations. Even the dealers no longer sell them. Mclaren, for instance, now only sell agm and conversion kits for all their cars. So something is not good if a dealer is willing to cut out a part they are selling for $2k to replace with something you can buy at autozone. 🤷

    How faulty are the F12 and the 812 from your experience as a mechanic?

    • @HollywoodMechanic
      @HollywoodMechanic  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@G6_SA 812 is kinda new, so faults are not common yet but it's the same basic layout for the engine and gearbox. The F12 I see the same issues. So water/oil pump, radiator design, timing solenoids under the valve cover, transmission over haul and weep hole requirements, shocks leaking (especially if lowered).

    I had a 2008 612 and was speaking with one of the top Ferrari mechanics in the country (similar to Micah, but down in San Diego) and when I asked Steve how do I get a Ferrari without problems, he said the key is to buy a three year old car and sell it before the warranty runs out. After having to replace my tie rod ends at 20k miles you learn that in fact Ferrari's are just not well built.

    • @HollywoodMechanic
      @HollywoodMechanic  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's nice to be mentioned in the same class as Steve M, if that's who you're talking about. Great guy, really bringing engineering into his custom mods and repairs. Hard to get ahold of though, but the best are it seems. It's funny that he commented that. If you read the comment from @stuffhappens5681 "Not exactly selling me..." my reply was similar to what Steve told you: Buy a previous generation 4 or 5 year model and sell it after a year. You really get the cross point between most depreciation already occurred and least maintenance expected.

    There goes my plan to get an FF (dont want GT4 Lusso). I am pretty good with DIY projects and I have a lift but after watching this video and why costs are so high (parts) I will be passing on FF and probably getting C8 AND M5 instead. Bye bye screaming v12...welcome rumbling v8's?

    • @HollywoodMechanic
      @HollywoodMechanic  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I hope you're not talking about an M5 with the S63 engine. I just sold my N63 (almost same engine for the v8 TT non M cars) and it was a complete nightmare to own. I spent $5000 in parts alone, not including the notorious valve stem seals and guides or the $3200 fuel injectors. That motor had 24 different fluid hose connections to pull that motor and you have to do it after 10 years because the plastic intake leaks boost. Such a nightmare. If you have good mechanical hands, you can do all the Ferrari stuff yourself. The BMW requires much more skill and time to service as well as needing ISTA to try to diagnose their "torque request" system that won't tell you what's wrong, only the engine is low on power. Such a nightmare.
