- In the late 1800s, Manchester's political revolution was well underway. Ideas and movements born or nurtured in the city were fast becoming mainstream ideas that would go on to influence national and international politics. It's a story that starts with Lancashire cotton workers voting to keep the blockade of cotton from Southern States during the US Civil War, even during a regional famine, and the the long and violent fight for the rights and recognition of women as equal members of society to men. In that story are the formidable women of Manchester - Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters Christabel, Sylvia and Adela, Annie Kenney, Lydia Becker, Constance Gore-Booth and the many radical supporters of the movement that would come to be known as the 'Suffragettes'. See how Manchester influenced the lives not only of great statemen like Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, but millions of women around the world, galvanised by the actions of the city's unwavering women.

My own ancestors lived in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan during the first half of the 19th century, assisting fugitive slaves on the Underground Railroad escape across the border into Canada, placing them beyond the reach of the slavecatchers. Every Mancunian today should hold their heads high with pride for the courage of their own ancestors, taking a heavy economic hit in order to stand united with their enslaved brothers and sisters in America. While some would weave the cotton stained with the blood and tears, stinking of the pain and misery of those in chains who picked it, the people of Manchester stood tall and said: "No, we will have no part in this obscenity!"

G'day to you! Just found you so I have some catching up to do, really enjoy anything to do with Manc. history, I am a Ex Manc ,came to Oz in 1966 ,lived in Sydney but to me it was another Big City only more Humid, traveled to Perth on 2 week Holiday never went back, all my Family went back, I didnt know that till Sally Army informed me, never saw them again! From Armadale Western Aust.

There's a blue plaque on the side of Leesbrook Mill in Lees stating that Annie Kenney used to work there. Its a pity she not better acknowledged around her home village.
Absolutely! I grew up but far from that mill and only heard of Annie Kenney as an adult
I live in Grotton and pass the mill most days. Only managed to read what it said recently when I was stuck in traffic next to the plaque.

@@BeeHereNowuk I have a degree in Modern History and used to find local social history so dull. The older you get though and the more left wing I become I now find it the most interesting aspect of history. And most of it is on our doorstep as well

Growing up in Chorlton-on-Medlock I always wondered why there was a statue of Abraham Lincoln in Platt Fields park, it wasn't until long after leaving the city I discovered why. It would have been nice to have been taught this kind of thing at school. Thanks again...all the best.

Ollie, the image at 3:45 sure looks like the River Medlock "and I'm over 5,000 miles away." I have always been a believer in Equal opportunity/rights and fairness in which individuals are treated, being unhampered by artificial barriers, prejudices, or preferences, except very limited circumstances, a blind person performing brain surgery for example. Only 10 months between videos in your excellent series, feels like 10 years: jeez, I’ve missed you! When I look back on being brought up and educated in M/Cr, without the insights you provide, I reflect on what how very long it’s taken society to accept it’s (do we still use possessive apostrophes?) past and, with the help of educators like yourself, learn and be proud of what we’ve accomplished along the way. The cities of Manchester and Salford really have influenced world affairs more than is taught or appreciated.
P.S. wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could put names to ALL the faces on the pictures you’ve presented, they are the anonymous faces that suffered before the heroes took the headlines and had their statues built
