My grandmother was the chief electrical engineer responsible for designing the seeker head of the Hellfire missile. She used to give me 30mm casings from Apache test fires that she had collected while working on the project. The project was classified as black grade, a level above top secret, due to the cutting-edge technology employed in the missile, which was unknown to the rest of the world at the time. At one point, she could even tell you the exact times the Russian satellites flew over, which was when they scheduled field testing for the missile to avoid Russian detection of the testing.
Great video, I love flying the Apache. One thing I noticed is that you were not actually using auto ranging for the video. At the beginning you had it on as indicated by the A##.# next to the P-HMD marking at the bottom of the IHADS. When you WAS or de-WAS a weapon it actually set it back to manual ranging, "M1.5" by default. Every time you WAS or De-WAS you have to re-enable auto ranging with the keypad. Keep up the great videos!
@@GrowlingSidewinder To help remember to reengage auto ranging- each time you have to think about adjusting your aim it's worth thinking about why the system isn't helping you like it's supposed to, then, as the first step in troubleshooting that question, check to see what mode it's in.
Additionally, HMD shots aren’t as accurate as a TADS shot would be. OBTW, look at his TQ…….his transmission would be toast from the TQ he’s pulling. I love his videos, now I question some of the jet videos I watch.
Hey @GrowlingSidewinder , helo driver here and wanted to weigh in. Looks like you didn't actually lose Engine 1! Check out your engine page for Engine 1: TQ is high, TGT is high, Np is high, Ng is at 0. This system uses an Ng sensor and governor to help meter fuel, looks like a round may have messed up your Ng sensor and now the engine controllers are giving it all the gas trying to drive up Ng. I would imagine ENGINE 1 OUT is tied to the Ng sensor too, which is why that's one of your warnings. Good idea coming in for a rolling landing! Less power required which is important for most engine issues. If you ever do have this super specific issue again you might consider bringing Engine 1's throttle back to a mid position. This would stop the overspeed on Engine 1 and allow Engine 2 to pick up some of the load again.
Thanks for all the amazing content! You're definitely one of the hardest working creators on TH-cam. Would love to see a ground attack video featuring the Su-25. I've only ever seen you do odd dogfights with it, but never in its intended role. Would be interesting to see how it compares to other ground attack planes in your hands.
You should consider the number of bulletholes in your AH-64 as a success criteria for this mission. Even when you fly safely back to base, not sure whether this mission would be considered a success. Nice video!!
A little video idea from me: could you do a kind of air show in DCS. With camera perspectives as if you as an audience were really looking. It would also be interesting to know what the different aircraft sound like from the ground. would be very special to see 😁
I´m totally down the rabbit hole of VTOL VR, been learning the 26 and 45, watching this make me think the AH-94 is next. I been holding off on it because I never flew attack helicopters. Thanks for all the awesome content GS 💖💛💚
Used to play the very first AH-64D Apache sim by Janes called Lonbgow. It had an intense instructor training before doing the missions. It was a lot of fun with several way points that had Sams and other threats to take out before going to the next one.
Well actually hovering makes you an easy target for tanks and ATGMs and BMPs with ATGMs it also uses a lot more power to hover and more fuel. Although there is a time and a place to hover I didn’t really see on here, maybe when I was lobbing hellfires but even then I don’t think I could spare the fuel.
@@GrowlingSidewinderbut maybe it's good to slide sideways. You set a smaller target, still has speed and you can use your weapons. Especially against the Mi-8 i think. However, I don’t know if my thoughts stand up to fact-checking.
The Apache's armor is on the ventral part of the aircraft, the titanium tub, and the wing panels on the sides. The engines don't have armor protection.
you jettisoned the flares and landed with a fck load of hellfires. if i would have to do the maintenance on that gear, i would demand a box of beer for that landing

Love you videos GrowlingSidewinder! I will check out the mission - I have not flown the Apache in a while...so I think I will stay waaaay back and fire Hellfires....
On the upgrade: Intel/AMD gives, and Microsoft takes away. Some nice flying, even after losing an engine. Man, you got shot up on this mission. Glad you made it back.
Yeah, the update was a mod buster for sure. I've gotten some to work but it requires some frustrating, sometimes tedious workarounds. I've also suffered from FPS drops too. Seemed to have done more damage than good unfortunately.
I'm sure they have the tech for a "frequency/seeker agile" version of the Hellfire. One that can be programmed to be used like a normal radar guided version, or set to "home on emissions" to take out a SAM radar system. Just an idea. 😂😂
Against other helicopters, try laser ranging then slaveing the gun to that. The difference in distance and closure rate won’t change enough to make it ineffective. But should help you get quicker kills
The canon is fun but FFAR are far more effective. Why are the Technical vehicles blowing up the way they are ? Are they loaded with Explosives too ? It seems like a pretty violent explosion even if the round hits the gas tank and what's the chance of doing that Every Time ?
I had bad lags since the last update. I started using 'process lasso' to make sure dcs is high priority and select which cores I want it running on. I start process lasso. So, you ditch the flares for safety - but you keep the 240 pounds of high explosive (yeah, i know it's an "insensitive" warhead... but it's still a dozen 20 pound cans of boom hanging off your bird) And 300 plus pounds of solid rocket motor propellant. 😂
Hey, GS, were you carrying a full Hellfire payload on this run? because with that much infantry and small-arms targets, it seems like a good situation for at least one 2.75" rocket pod.
Great video! If I may make a suggestion, when you are coming in for a rolling landing, keep your forward airspeed over 60 KIAS and your descent rate at the halfway mark. the faster you descend, the more likely that you enter a vortex-ring state and slam it down like you did.

There is no "above top secret." Maybe you're thinking of "black budget" but that's not above TS it's just not publicly available funding information.
