There are a lot of really good golfers out there that can get rattled in an open qualifier. But a 1.2 or better ain’t shooting a 111. They would bow out after 9, because that type of golf can impact everyone on the group. As evident by this video. The USGA needs to do something about bad golfers putting in random fake scores on GHIN just to be able to play a local qualifier.

Used to watch a lot of golf on the tv over the past 40 years or so, from European tour to Asian tour to Sunshine tour to Pga tour but this past few year's i only watch the majors and TH-cam golf, Bryan bros in particular.
That looked like a very bouncy course there George, don't know how anyone could shoot -4 round there 🤯

This is my favorite Bryan Bros video so far. One bad shot + bad recovery + knowing that you are out = total deflation. That's what makes golf so hard and so beloved at the same time.

Based on what? He was knocking in testers for par all day. He gave himself very few good looks for birdie. He was leaving the ball in bad spots all day.

You did well with what you had that day. You had that one crazy out-of-the-jungle punchout and the tree-scuff, plus a lot of scrambling, and persevered well through it. Positioning on those greens is crazy too. Cheers G!
George, thanks for sharing your experiences. It’s amazing how mental golf is. If you’re carrying over thoughts from the next hole or even the next shot, it can influence different parts of your swing (speed, cadence, timing, etc). Playing under pressure like this, you literally have to take one shot at a time. Best of luck going forward!

very relatable video, i did the same thing in my qualifier, it’s so hard not to give up when you know your out of it
I was even through 8 in my US open qualifier a few weeks ago and then ran into some trouble off the tee on a hard golf course and ended up 5 over.. It just doesn't go your way sometimes, these golf courses are set up really hard for US open and you have to hit it well all day long.

Same exact type of round happened to me at locals last week, 3 bad swings cost me 7 strokes. Hard to stay in a positive mind frame when you’re hitting it so solid and making a lot of those testy par putts, and then have a couple bad holes that cost you down the back 9. Next year baby!

For the majority of the holes you played solid, that's what you got to take with you to the next one. Some shots were a few yards off which gave you some tough putts on some of the greens and some of the tee shots put you in other weird situations. Keep going at it and you will succeed👍

I've noticed people who like to work the ball off the tee can start to get in trouble by leaving the ball too far to the right or left. It's more repeatable if you hit the ball straight off the tee. The same goes for iron shots. George has a gorgeous swing!

I know the feeling took at PAT in Myrtle in 2012, the guy I was paired with "just wanted something fun" to do that weekend and decided to take a pat, he had to shoot at least 95, messed with me

Greens were giving you fits. One bad swing coming down the stretch. Just a little unlucky. Couple putts drop, ball bounces a little different and you have a great day!

When a round is important, it'll always reach a point of no return if it isn't going well :( You did fantastic hanging on and staying patient waiting for something to happen; it just wasn't your day brotha. You played some fantastic golf and had some pretty rough breaks. Get em in the next one!

Once a pro reaches the point where his/her swings become mechanical and the outcomes are known and consistent the major hurdle then becomes the steely nerves needed in the round after a bad outcome. That, at any particular time in a competition, becomes the difference. Nice post George, hang in there sir.
Columbia CC is tough. Played in the Carolinas Mid am there in 2021. Think both rounds I was under par at the turn and wound up shooting 76 and 73 (I think.) Second round I was like 3 or 4 under at the turn. Brutal. I recognize that body language hahaha
That 5 iron from the trees on 18 was money… I love when those challenging shots work out
I'm a member of this club. Par for these guys who hit it so far on this course would be USGA 70. Invaribly in a USGA qualifier you may get paired with some golfer who has this unrealistic "dream" of having their best day of golf and qualify for one of the spots available. Never happens,. In 1974 I played in a USGA AM quailfier when the qualifier was 36 holes in one day. Player shoots 93 and I told him to withdraw as I was not going to play anymore golf with him that day. Years later at a very exclusive country club, just a privilege to play, had US Senior Qualifier. One of my playing partners shoots 96 (maybe) and never hit a green in regulation. I shot 74 which has to be one of the best qualifier scores I ever shot with the distraction. Golf associations shoud require 42 at least on the first nine to continue.
Tournaments should require their players to have a stronger mental game and disqualify them if someone else playing bad golf affects their play
