I really like using paradiddles and their variations on my set. They make some very interesting combinations of sounds and grooves in jazz and especially in funk. Thanks again for you insight Kevin.
Gene played a very difficult pattern on his later versions of "Dark Eyes" where he would begin with a cymbal and then introduce a bossa nova beat, that was a helluva neat trick. A good example is the new years eve party at the Metropole cafe in 1965.
I struggle with these playing Traditional grip. Being a huge Krupa nut I try to use trad on my snare and revert to match on my floor tom’s especially. Been working on these last few day’s using just traditional grip on my pad. Do you think it will mess with my muscle memory Kevin ? My left hand when using traditional is no where near as strong as when using match but I want to continue using traditional on my snare as it just feels right despite me struggling still. Only been playing 12 month’s but I’m an old guy at 60 to start I suppose. Have played bass since I was a teen so helps with timing.
I think that you will get used to it if you keep working on it. It might take some time, so don't get discouraged. A good teacher can also help you with the technique of traditional grip. I would add that in the end you should do what works for you and what you're most comfortable with, even if it's not what your favorite drummers did. Let me know how your progress goes!
I could watch videos like this all day. Great fun :)
Thanks, Dylan! Very kind of you to say.
First class. Thank you.
Thanks, John! That is sincerely appreciated!
Sonically very deep -- how lovely to see it happening after an explanation, so we know something, we hear it, and we see the body making those sounds.
Happy New Year, Michael. Happy New Year, Kevin.
