  • Liquefied natural gas could be the magic words for future transportation. LNG is not yet widely used in Germany and the EU, but it's much cleaner than diesel. We visit Germany's LNG pioneers.

      Natural gas does not have carbon to carbon bonds. So, soot will be less from it. Most of the energy from burning natural gas comes from hydrogen not carbon. Natural gas literally has four times the number of hydrogen atoms to carbon atoms.

      LNG tells us nothing. CNG however tells us it's compressed natural gas usually methane. If it doesn't liquify at the pressure stored it's called CNG. Our automotive LPG is understood to be 50/50 butane/propane requiring hardly more than two atmosphere pressure to liquify . Pure propane LPG for domestic use requires maybe three or four atmosphere to liquify . Pure methane requires a high pressure to liquify and tanks weigh twice as much as propane or butane/propane tanks . Butane of course is in plastic cigarette lighters and needs less than an atmosphere pressure to liquify .
      It's not a good move these days to obsess over particulate emissions . We need more particulate emissions around 3 nm size to cool the planet. We got serious fires now because of covid virus grounding passenger jets from skies among other pullbacks. Our atmosphere is too clean and planet has now warmed up a little extra in last 18 months . At 420 ppm of co2 a sustained clean atmosphere will be catastrophic unless we get down to 350 and lower but that'll take a hundred years to get to 350 .

      Very negative. Its easy to put a spin on anything, just look at Musk's population videos. The only significant threat to life due to climate change that I'm aware of is the potential for methane to escape due to melting permafrost. It would make a lot of sense to burn that methane and create incentive to contain it rather than let it escape into the atmosphere. Rather than "terraforming" mars and putting all our effort into electric cars rather than improving the nuclear powerplants that could ultimately power them, technologies like these should receive much more attention. The distribution advantage of natural gas over gasoline is obvious to me. I'm waiting for a multi fuel vehicle with an independent electric powertrain from the manufacturers, but instead we get the 30 mpg Polaris slingshot.

    Now 2021 it's costing me 95 cents +
    Petrol is $ 1.60 +
    I have to burn about 1/3 more LPG to get same km .

    Investing money into building up new infrastructure to burn more fossil fuels is going to speed up global warming.
    As far as the lorries are concerned there are EV lorries that are about to be released by Tesla, BYD, Mercedes, Volvo, Renault, Mitsubishi, DAF, MAN, Scania, and many more. When there is such a big movement towards electric lorries, it makes no sense to build new fossil fuel technology.
    As for the ships, then hydrogen is the answer, there are already some ships mostly car ferries, but these have a short range. If a ship is going to travel up and down the Rhein, then hydrogen is by far the best option.

      Hi, it's just because of energy density.
      1L of lng has like 30 times more energy in it than 1L of CNG. It means roughly that to achieve the same distance on 1 tank, a CNG vehicle has to have a 30 times bigger tank than the same vehicle propelled with lng.
      Hope i was clear, have a good day!

    • @carl8790
      @carl8790 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @JosephArata
      @JosephArata 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carl8790 another problem with CNG, it creates crank case water vapor, so you have to change the oil more often than other diesel or diesel like ignition sources. CNG is fuel quenched, not air as well. So you're taking a diesel engine and retrofitting it to run as a spark ignition gasoline engine with CNG, so it's way less efficient than standard diesel or bio diesel, which are compression ignited.
