Great video. I don't mind having to buy/replace a cheap plastic part (I've come to expect it from disposable products today). But what Minn Kota makes you do, to replace something as cheap as that steering collar, is nauseating. Once you have that head off, you've home free. It's getting to that point that's disgusting. Minn Kota has been doing this long enough to know what kind of stress is put on those pieces. Yet, they still made it from the cheapest plastic they could find. At the price they're charging for these TM's that's unforgivable. GREAT video, though. Guys like you are a God-send to us DIYer's that aren't yet familiar with products like this.
Amen....but, wait till you see what's involved in getting that box off the TM. What Minn Kota did with how they engineered this product, and the cheap plastic they used is beyond shameless. They know better....especially, at what these units cost today.
Amen... I'm on here for the same reason everyone else did, and my is brand new. It's beyond shameless that Minn Kota is making parts on their motors so inaccessible, that break so effortlessly. I'll get to know how to maintain this TM, because I have to...but, this is the last Minn Kota I buy, that's for sure. Getting that steering box off the TM is absolutely nauseating. That's the part he doesn't show. *But, yes, shame on Minn Kota for using plastic THAT f**king cheap. They know better.*
Another good one....Lots of important tips. here!! I stripped out one of those same SS 8-32 x 2.0 long screws as well and had to slot the head with a Dremel tool. My screws had a type of Loctite on them and I think that caused the problems that we both experienced. I cleaned the holes out with a 8/32 tap just to be safe and used the Purple Loctite (low strength) to reassemble. I also regressed all the gears in the steering assembly. Thanks' again for making the whole job much easier.
I saw you at the frenzy and didn't get a chance to shake hands. Next time for sure. Just subbed and looking forward to following your channel. Nebraska WoodSTR
Great video on disassembly of the shaft and the steering gear box. I just broke mine and order 5 of them so I have them on hand and also if they ever get discontinued
My plastic piece is busted up almost exactly like yours but steering seems to be working ok? I don't see the need to replace yet. Was your steering disabled or did you just want to replace the busted part? Great video.
Great video. This piece just broke on my husbands trolling motor. Would it affect your assist deploy because it is now difficult to get the trolling motor to release and deploy?
That's the easy part. Getting the shaft out with the Terrova spring loaded lift assist and getting that back together is almost impossible. Did it once and within a couple of months the collar was broke again. The problem lies in that when you hit something, like a stump, in autopilot it turns to correct its direction and breaks that collar. Not a good design at all. I find that it works fine with just the friction weight of the motor on the collar even if its broken,
Great one suggestion you are skilled but you might want to take pictures as you're doing it incase a shim or gear falls out that way Murphey doesn't creep up on you Murphey is my best friend 😂

Thanks for this instructive video. Did a replacement on my Minn Kota and your video was very helpful. Greeting from Sweden.
Greetings. I'm glad my video helped. Please subscribe. I will be making more videos. Thanks for watching.
Very helpful! Why did not they make it out of metal ☹

My trolling motor would wander when trolling and that was annoying.

May i know the part number? its a little bit blurry sorry i cant read it.
Sorry for the out of focus number. It is 1A4055. It also has another number under that one it is 2321530.
Hope this helps.
Thank you so much im gonna order it right now.
Can you tell me the size of the hexagon?
Hexagon? Could you be more specific? I'll try to answer.
@@blueberryridgeoutdoors yes hexagon size
Same part just busted on mine. Is it hard to get the control head off to slide the shaft out? (that part should be made out of metal btw)
No. The head is the easy part. The hardest part is the lift assist spring. Watch my video and wear gloves when handling the spring.
There’s tool you can buy for taking the spring. It’s a thin bar with a stud on it.
Where else to get spare parts
I ordered them Minnkota every year

what is material of the gears i assume that they are not metal
Plastic

It shouldn't

Do you know how it broke? Great video brother
Usually the motor is turning 1 way and you hit something. My boat is a magnet for hidden trees or shallow shoals.
I broke it in high waves when the motor was slamming up and down on that plastic piece.
Awsome video
Thank you. Please consider subscribing.
Put 12 volts on it while on bench to check the motor and gears are synchronized
Very carefully----Now beat it with a hammer!
LOL!!
Those gears are so cheap it’s shameful. The mark up on these motors must be 500%.
I agree.
why didn't he just take the pin out?
