A little late, but go back and watch some videos of someone playing. If you watch their right hand the entire time and then rewatch the video paying attention to their left hand all the time, you’ll see that “muting” is really a combo of right and left hand muting - sometimes at the same time. The simplest answer is you mute everything that’s not the exact note you’re intending to play.
You need to mute using more than 1 of your fingers. Practice harmonics specifically so you will have more control over when and how you produce them. I have a couple of videos on my channel that you can check out as well.
