On a serious note, the throwing trick for moss/lichen placement is fantastic! Not sure how I can translate that to table-top gaming terrain, but I'll pitch some ideas.
So cool to see so much detail go into something that we so often never think about. It is pretty wild to think that every time we see a scene...someone or (a group of someones) had to place EVERY item in a room, add every scratch or place every stray item. SO COOL❤️
They're awesome. I watched them turn a modern house with linoleum sidig into a wooden house with wooden siding, all done with paint for the filming of "The Hurricane" with Denzel Washington. 😅
I worked in props for theater and i can confirm when you surround yourself with cool people you will have fun. And we had way less drama then the actors who were getting in some beef with the stage managers
They needed you all on rock duty for Last of the Mohicans. I remember when my parents first pointed out the wobbcanvas rock. I was just a kid and couldn't believe the rocks were not all real.😂
Most floor sweep is made from sawdust that has been treated with oil so dust will bind to it. Guess it depends what kind of glue you're going to use but it may cause issues.
Question: when your a prop master, are you primarily making props or is it a mixture of making and buying?? And would you have to organise everything like furniture as well??
Watching an episode of the original MacGyver series recently, I found a case where a custom-made rock didn't "perform" so well. There was a helicopter coming in for a landing in the background, and a rock in the foreground was shimmying a little bit in the breeze from the rotors.
This was a really gneiss video! Fake boulders are one of the first bits of movie magic I learned about, and I've always had a soft spot for them (ironic). I remember reading an American Girl book as a kid about a young lady in 1914 who loved the movies, and got to go with her uncle (a small-time actor) to the studio as a birthday present, and see how the sausage was made. She was exploring the prop room when her uncle told her to catch a boulder (which she realised as he threw it was made of cardboard). I haven't gotten to work on tv or film yet (I have done a bit of acting on local stages, and a bit of costuming too), but whenever I'm helping the prop and set people out, I love when I get to make fake walls, rocks, and terrain. My favourite one so far was cutting a hole in the stage, and applying sand, plaster, moss, and fake rocks around it to make a grave they could actually lower Ophelia into for a production of Hamlet!
You cut a hole in the stage?! I want to know more. My dance teacher once used a coca cola wash on a slippery stage for pointe shoes and was charged $1,000 for the cleanup. (no one fell during the performance at least).
The Iraqis would use a coffee can sized armor piercing EFP, cover it in spray foam and when it got semi solid they would roll it around in the dust and that would look like any other rock around.
Wonder if it'll soon make more sense to just use AI in After Effects or even our editing software to just add the exact boulders that look good to scenes.
We love when you CHALK about your job. Your videos hold so much SEDIMENTAL value for us movie buffs.
Sedimetal haha get cause rocks can have iron in it hehe
@@Earlierfour that's not the joke at all
What does chalk have to do with anything
@@zarrowthehorse it’s a sedimentary rock 🤦♂️
@@NotGabe001 it's a joke to me
Don't take that woman for granite, she really rocks at set dec.
You slate that joke

@@MonkeyJedi99 kinda like how some artists fling a paint brush like that to make stars in a painting
@@MonkeyJedi99was thinking the same thing for my miniatures
She sounds like someone who loves her job, and that’s awesome.
You can always tell when a person is talking about a job they love!
She rocks.
Absolutely!!!🤩
The real rock stars of the industry
Weird film fact - a lot of the scenics I’ve worked with sound EXACTLY like her. They are THE NICEST PEOPLE on earth.
I'd say they were rocking it
Never take these people for granite. You rock, Scott
Imagine how fun this job would be if you were stoned
They've amossed a lot of knowledge.
You can tell she loves her job by her stone of voice...
"That was a boulder move!" You're setting the foundation for these artists, Scott. You rock!
The attention to detail is amazing 💎💯
So cool to see so much detail go into something that we so often never think about. It is pretty wild to think that every time we see a scene...someone or (a group of someones) had to place EVERY item in a room, add every scratch or place every stray item. SO COOL❤️
If I worked in the film industry, this is the kind of work I would most like to do. 🤩
This is pretty much how hobbyists make rocks for dioramas and table top game terrain! Just at a larger scale. Very cool to see the two are so similar!
Truly the real life magicians, is awesome.
Scenics are fantastic! I worked as a paint utility during my first production and was absolutely amazed by their talent.
That's a gem of a boulder❤
Art Dept....Best Job Ever!!!
Wood flour and paint, with PVA also
Makes great flocking.
These are the things that nobody notices in movies but if they're not there they notice it.
These guys rock.
Me: I need more rock puns! Scott: Your wish is granite!
That’s so cool! Your channels actually helped me learn of ways I can make props for my future films on my other channel! So thank you for that! 😊
Looks like Kirk could crush a Gorn with it...
Blimey! My thought exactly. Saw that rock being held over his head! Then blammo!
I had never heard of floor sweep compound before...
It's really useful for picking up fine particulates.
That seems really hard to do, but they sure did a solid job
Rock solid
I love seeing all this kind of stuff!!
I was fortunate enough to work with the San Francisco Opera prop folks. Styrene was always on the menu.
Never stop never stopping making these
It's not just a boulder, it's a rock, it's a ROCK!! 😭😭😭
They rock
*files that away into the folder of all the prop and scenic techniques this channel has taught me*
More please!
I used to do this. Work with foam. Best job ever! 😎👍🏼

UGH i love watching people are.good at what they do. And for creatives, learning a new technique is like Batman adding to his toolbelt.
As someone who's constantly outside, touching rocks, that lichen looks perfect. Wtf. You all are geniuses!
I love to see people having fun at work.
Scott's pun delivery is stone cold.

Man, she is amazing! That work was rock solid.
Lol, I love the faint "ho ho ho", that's how you know that it really clicked.
Hank Schrader: THEY’RE MINERALS!
I LOVE CLASTIC ROCKS!!
THIS is movie magic!

Loving these videos!
😂😂😂 Sweet! What a great job! How fun!
*Scott Rock and Roll*
I love seeing you and all your coworkers doing various stuff on set, this job must 'rock'.
True artists. So jealous this is your job Scott!😂🫶
This is brilliant what she’s doing in the dad joke 😂😂😂😂
That rock has a role.
That's Art 👌🏻
I want her job so badly! Looks fun! 🥹
You can tell he makes dad/ prop jokes all the time just by their reactions.
Reminds me of the old snl skit about an out-of-shape Hercules... "Perhaps one of these other, smaller, boulders will suffice". 😂
That was so wholesome
Question: when your a prop master, are you primarily making props or is it a mixture of making and buying?? And would you have to organise everything like furniture as well??
"Makin' moss." A little touch that helps make them look real.
Watching an episode of the original MacGyver series recently, I found a case where a custom-made rock didn't "perform" so well. There was a helicopter coming in for a landing in the background, and a rock in the foreground was shimmying a little bit in the breeze from the rotors.
ROCK AND STONE!
You guys deserve way more money
The f-bomb got me rolling😂😂
Sisyphus is gonna love this April Fool’s prank.
I guess you can say their painting is pretty solid
The solid result of hard work.
Movie magic rocks. With forced perspective you can even use a large boulder the size of a small boulder.
At least you can say you met the rock and he was boulder than you thought
I would love to work there doing all that stuff
That is so awesome! I would run from them in an avalanche! 😂
I will always remember that scene in little house on the prairie where the kid pretended to be a werewolf and lifted the fake rock
that is just brilliant
Miniature Builders 🤝 Scenic Artists
Flocking
I'm gonna keep an eye out for these rocks in the background
That last guy was like, “new joke acquired”
Scott rock and roll but you're gathering some moss
Now thats a Boulder i can get behind.
(Nice work)
The laugh at the end tho😅😅😅
You will never run out of dad jokes
That “oh ho ho” look told me “get the fuck out of here, man” 😂😂

I figured they used flocking for the moss but saw dust is definitely cheaper.
That looks so fun.
I like the jokes as much as the tips.
Thank you! This video was very gneiss.

Rock-n-role.
God i would love to do this
Those are some beautiful large boulders the size of small boulders
The rocks got plastered, so moss became the boss🎉
Seeing these I just think of Star Trek
😂 so true!!!
Floorsweep smells so good. When we use it at work, I'm im always tempted to roll in it like a dog. I haven't yet... But the thought is always there.😂
Gneiss work, crew!
I thought The Rock needed a stunt double
Coolest thing in the world that this a paying job. Awesome

Talk about getting "stoned" on the job😂
Solid information!
