That is sick!!! My first proper bike ( aside from a brigs and stratton engined mini bike) was a 1977 XR 75. What a great bike!!! My dad was a diesel mechanic and had bunches of gas cans in the back of his truck.. I was careless one day and ran diesel full in the bike.. NEVER Quit. I went to a KX80 after that as I started racing.. Man.... I remember DG.. Again that bike is sick!
When i was a kid, I had an sl70 and used to race it against the xr 75's back in the day... I was always Sooo envious of the kids who had these!! this one is crazy primo shape, just wow!
There were a lot of those around when I was growing up. I had a YZ and my friend had a RM and that helped us stand out. Those were good bikes though, loved riding with those guys who had them.
My cuz had a tricked out XR75. Almost as nice as that one. I loved the DG stuff and it had fox air shocks. Your bike is sic. My first bike was the brand spankin' new 1980 CR80R when I was 13. That bike meant so much to me, I'll die happy because of it. Man, I liked hearing your bike. Thanks!
One gorgeous 1978 Honda XR 75. Beautiful Bike. Bravo for the amazing Kaplan Restoration, amongst so many amazing restorations of yours. Great bike for a kid to learn how to ride on.
Believe it or not Susan Perkins' (Miss America 1978) sister Brenda taught me how to ride a motorcycle back in '77 on a XR 75 and about a couple years later Dad bought me a like new 1977 model from a friend of the family's in '79. It had two exhaust pipes with it, the stock quiet one and one similar to this one, loud and proud and the quiet pipe didn't stay on very long, lol. My best friend in Trenton, Ohio had a Yamaha 100 Enduro when I met him and I had the XR. I used to take mine over to his house and we'd ride his yard(they had 3 acres) and the fields around their property and we'd cut through the farm fields from time to time and go to Big T (similar to Tasty Freeze or Dairy Queen) and get Big T burgers and a fry and listen to the jute box. Those were the days, early 80s and us kids could get out and rip it up without much of a worry back then, I dearly miss it!
I had a friend who raced dirt bikes, when he changed to a high class, he sold me his xr-75, That bike changed my life, Living in the country was fine,, I had a blast on that bike.
We just did a complete 78 xr75 restoration using Xr Mini Racers engine kit . It's now a 110cc it rips Jeff Ward pipe fox shocks sweet. Uptown Motors Coloma Michigan
Pretty awesome to see a TH-cam channel doing reviews and rides of old classic MX bikes. Incredible works of art and its wild to see how far technology has brought us... keep up the good work and thanks for the videos guys!!
Beautiful, I always lusted after one of these as a kid, but we never had the dough for toys like that. The only thing that is wrong with this bike, in my mind anyway, is that some kid is never going to be sitting in the saddle tearing it up like it was designed for, great bike thou, I love it.
My dad bought me a new one in 1978. If I'm remember right he paid $453 for it. I bet I put 100k hard miles on that thing. I wore the cylinder completely out. Dad took it back to Honda and they rebuilt it and bored it to 90cc. It was a blast then. It would hit 59mph going down hill
So awesome!! My first bike I had and learned to ride was a 78 XR75. My mom and step dad got it for my 7th birthday! My step dads friend who was an auto body tech painted the original grey plastics and tank honda red.

That's a really nice little XR,looks like a backyard Supercross track bike they used to race back in the 80's.Some of those guys would spend crazy amounts of money to build a XR just to race on backyard tracks.Theses where adults that were racing theses little bikes Not kids.Guess they were living their dream of racing Supercross. If only on backyard tracks. No kid is going to Appreciate how much time and money went into making this bike.Maybe some kids that had rich parents could afford to build them bikes like this but definitely Not your average family. This Special XR should be in a museum or some place special.
That bike is trick. I like the way he changed the bottom of the frame where the footpegs mount. That was one of the down falls of the XR -75. If you rode hard they would end up bending downward. I never liked how the pegs mounted to the cases. The honda XR-75 is a bike that made a lot of kids happy.
It’s so cool to see one of these my dad was born in 68 and said he got one of these around 10 years old from Santa so probly this exact model year or around there I love your videos and the bikes you show case
I had a 1975 model with the grey tank. Bored out and had a racing pipe on it. Everybody else had bigger motorcycles so I had to compensate with riding skills. Woundup breaking the frame right beneath the gas tank. Welded it back together and kept riding. I love two- Strokes but man what great times I had on that 1975 Honda xr75. My next motorcycle would be a 1976 Honda CR125 Elsinore.
@@skip741x3 yes indeed, drastic change in power delivery! I lived on a long dirt road across from a creek with very few houses and woods all around. One day I heard something like I had never heard before echoing loudly through the pine trees. I rushed to the front door to see what it was and somebody came by on a 1974 Honda CR125 and he was standing up on the foot pegs with his legs outstretched and the front wheel in the sky and shooting a rooster tail like I had never seen in my life. He was probably in fifth or sixth gear and disappeared out of sight standing on the wheel pegs and pulling the longest wheelie I had ever seen. I ran out to the road and it looked like it had been plowed for as far as I could see. And that was my first smell of castor oil. I waited right there because I knew the road was a dead end and he would turn around and come back by. He stopped and I discovered what a Honda Elsinore was. It was 1974 and I was 10 years old. I owned a Honda Z50 a and a CT trail bike 70. I felt like I had discovered something that nobody else knew existed. Bruce Lee and the Honda Elsinore ruled my world in 1974. Both represented explosive extreme power that I would enjoy the rest of my life. But discovering them at 10 years of age was beyond jaw-dropping. I had a Z50, trail bike 70, xr75 and finally the 1976 CR125. Later in life I had a chance to purchase a Honda xr250r at a great price only to have somebody steal it while I was getting flooded. I am now trying to get a 1986 Honda CR250 running. Sorry for the long winded story, just traveling back down memory lane and long hot summer walks, camping out in tree forts that we built, and swimming in blue holes, Creeks or whatever we can find.
With the big bore kit and bigger carb. I would be curious to know what the hp/torque numbers are over stock. I fondly remember the first year xr-75 a buddy had that routinely kicked my butt riding a ct70.
