Great stories Sir, thank you so much for sharing them with us. Loved the part when you were crawling around opening boxes, and boxes of great drums. Awesome back drop with all the classic kits sitting behind you. Especially the Orange Sparkle Ludwig drums. What sizes are with the kit??
thanks for those memories. Your stories about Charlie's relationship with Joe Morello was beautiful. I had the honour to study with Joe for 7 months in 1980 when I was over from Australia and he was a fantastically generous and gifted teacher. For Charlie to help him the way he did without hesitation speaks volumes for his respect for the musical lineage that Joe was part of.
The charm of Charlie was irresistible. His way of playing the drums, his fidelity to the Stones and his integrity are an example, not only for musicians, but also for all people. I am still processing his passing.
Charlie is such an enigma. I think one of his greatest drum beats ever is Slave from Tattoo You. The mix of restraint but also tasteful ghost notes and power and control every time he does a fill is unparalleled. ANY other drummer woulda "played simple for the sake of playing simple" and made it sound like a drum machine or played all over it and destroyed the feel. Charlies superpower is his ability to play simple, BUT make it way more complex and subtle than many would think. So much dynamics, snare ghosting, and syncopation and negative space in play. Nobody will ever match him!
I very briefly met Charlie in Mole Jazz a record shop in Kings Cross London. Just a random meeting, whilst searching through the racks of LPs and there was Charlie doing the same. We spoke briefly and pleasantly for a minute and just carried on browsing. He was friendly and just like any dude you might meet in a record shop.
I loved watching this video. It's always great to hear about Chalie. I've been a Stones fan for 42 years and have to say even though he's going to be missed, Charlie had a great life. His music will live forever.
What a wonderful tribute to a great musician and human being. Charlie was blessed to have Steve as a friend as well. He is smiling down from heaven. They say birds of a feather flock together... here is proof. Thank you so much Steve for this beautiful tribute, really enjoyed it and learned some very interesting things about Charlie. R.I.P.
Charlie was a great influence to many drummers, he created great grooves, beats and complemented the music he played. He will be missed but never forgotten. Thank you Charlie.
Amazing tribute Steve. Charlie was a legend. I’ve used Charlie’s signature sticks all the time for over 10 years as I just love them - to know he generously dedicated the royalties to Joe is just amazing. What a legend. Thank you for the stories. True hero of mine
I certainly a much bigger fan of Rush than I am of the Stones but there are some early clips of Geddy sounding pretty arrogant. I do agree Neil seemed to always be a complete gentlemen and in fact Charlie was a big Neil fan.
@@binkwood it seems to me that Geddy's perceived arrogance from the earlier years came from him simply being tired during interviews which would obviously come from playing 300+ shows a year.
They were very enjoyable Steve and thank you for sharing them! I can't believe that Charlie is now in that echelon of musicians who are no longer with us. He was a major influence on me, not only in my drumming but in style as well. He was one of the best! RIP Charlie Watts
I have always like Charlie,I saw pictures of him, when I was a kid,(i,m 55 yrs old now)before I ever heard him play, and from that first picture,I liked him,his cool, smooth, sophisticated, style, suave, classy, impeccable appearance, like James Bond but so much better, like Steve said, the best dressed man on the planet, and the coolest, smoothest drummer,he made his drumming look effortless, unbelievable,so awesome, true class, thankyou so much Steve for this tribute,it means so much to me to hear what a true gentleman he really was,and to hear your kind words..
Over the years I have heard hundreds of musicians if not thousands who said when they saw the Beatles that change their life especially the drummers seeing Ringo and that propelled them and some of them famous drummers to a life of drumming Well as a kid when I saw the Beatles and the Stones I had already been drumming for several years in Drum Corps so it was pretty high-level rudimental snare and I remember sitting at a friends place - my closest friend also a drummer - we were huge Stone's fans and I was sitting by his bed with my 3S tapping away to a tune and my friend said "What the hell are you doing?" in my then sheltered all-rudiments-all-the-time modality I said "Well drumming?" My buddy said "idiot listen just listen" and I did and now having retired from almost 50 years of professional playing I always looked to that moment hearing Charlie ... truly hearing him when I was on stage "Am I serving the music?" and tried all my career to do just that and if I was ... I thank Charlie for that inspiration. Missed.
Really enjoyed hearing you reminisce, sir. Thank you. I've been celebrating Charlie's life through listening to a lot of Stones recordings, both live and in the studio. Such an amazing body of work. And he was such a good sport with the Stones, falling in line with all their trappings and foibles, personnel changes. Never forgetting what he was there to do. I will miss him. No offense, but it's is truly amazing (ironic?) that Keith outlived him!
Keith - of all people - appreciated the integrity Charlie provided; the opposite of his entropy. It's the two of them together that made the chug of the mighty engine of the Rolling Stones. Thanks for sharing this.
@@DavidSmith-ss1cg agree with you, but I consider Keith a person with a lot of integrity and consistency but different style than Charlie. Charlie was a gentleman while Richards is a bohemian. However, it does not matter at all, their friendship was charming.
Very well done, particularly your reference to Joe “Castilian Drums “ Morello, 1965, Stagg High School , Stockton, Ca. Dave Brubeck Quartet played and out door concert in the Senior Quad, Morello went off on the Castilian Drums solo, changed my life, experience of a lifetime.
A heartening tribute, Steve! You know, drummers really are a world-wide family! As a teenager in Britain in the 1960s I hero worshipped Joe Morello. (Met him 3 times.) I had no idea he was financially in need. So the news that Charlie was such a help to Joe & Jean was great news. God bless all 3 of 'em!! They ALL brought such joy. (At a clinic Joe introduced Jean as "the best thing that's ever happened to me"!) As it says in the Good Book: "And there were giants in the land in those days." So true.
Thank you, Steve, for sharing some of your great memories of Charlie. I’m just a fan… knew a few things about each of them. Always had the impression that Charlie was a very nice man. But listening to your stories made Charlie Watts an iconic figure. A super neat man.
What a wonderful tribute to a man I've spent my whole life listening to - I'm sad that he's gone, but what a life & what a wonderful legacy he leaves behind. I'll spend the rest of my life listening to him too. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Loved the tribute and hearing the stories. It makes me sad to know that a man who was there for me, groovin in the pocket and giving me so many great moments in all my 57 years is really gone now. Will miss him. RIP my man.
Thanks, Steve. Charlie Watts was an interesting human and musician. I only witnessed the Stones play live once. it was an amazing experience. As a drummer, I watched Charlie's unusual technique and appreciated its sonic results. Unconventional technique yielded epic results...I still can't explain it. Perhaps that is why I am a conventional drummer and Charlie was not.
That was a great tribute!! Just you doing that kind of tribute to the human side of Charlie Watts, is a testimony of your character as a great man yourself Steve!!
What a sweet tribute Steve….. thanks for sharing your memories with your friend Charlie….. a great drummer, and it sounds like a really really nice person.

I Love Charlie… and this video tribute was helpful to watch, in terms of the grief I guess we are all feeling. You are very blessed to have met him and to spend times with him is so Cool. Wish there was a way for you to still finish the project you were talking about with him. You never know how important someone is or how much you will miss them until they are gone. Then boom! A big hole is in your Heart!! Love you Charlie!!!
Steve, you are a real good guy. You spoke so honest and well of Charlie and shared some tasty morsels that add insight and clarity to the beauty, charm and talent of Charlie Watts. I really enjoyed this video and its content and wish you the very best.
Beautiful. I also saw your post on Instagram. That was where I learned of Charlie's fondness for Joe Morello. How was a dear friend of mine and I was another of his devoted students. AND in 2010 I bought my beloved Maple Craviotto kit from you Steve. You made it possible by taking a trade on my DW's at the time. You were so kind to me. I hope our paths cross again some day.
Loved your talk...Charlie was my mentor during my drumming years. I think the idea of a book with some great photos of and descriptions of famous people's drum sets would sell big time.
Excellent tribute to Charlie Watts. At 13:28 that totally reminds me of Neil Peart not wanting to be in the spotlight. And the song Limelight comes to mind off of Moving Pictures.
I very much appreciate the kind words from all of you. I am so glad that you enjoyed my tribute.

I should say this was back in the mid eighties.
The Rare Humble and Classy Stone! Rest in Peace Charlie Watts.
Charlie Watts was a very modest person, it would be cool if his sketches of his hotel rooms were released in a nice book.❤
My wife and I were very fortunate to catch a few of the Iridium gigs they were very special and yes he was one classy gentleman he will be missed
What a story Steve! That was a great memory of one of the greatest. Incredible episode!

I love how he basically proves that a Gretsch jazz kit can be also great for rock music.
A wonderful tribute. We should all aspire to be as class an act as Charlie Watts.
Thank you so much, Steve. Your story brings me some comfort, i'm very happy with it. Still miss Charlie, words can't tell how much....
I'm glad I bought my Ludwig drumkit in your NY store back in 2010. I play it everyday here in Brasil. Great video, thank you!

Charlie had class, style, grace and dignity. A true English gentleman.
What an amazing tribute from you Steve.
Charlie was unique! Nobody sounds like him.
