    During the blitz Queen Elizabeth was asked if the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret would be sent to Canada for their safety. She answered, "They won't leave without me. I won't leave without the King and the King will never leave."

    Nobody does pomp and ceremony quite like the Brits. Magnificent.

    I wouldn't have been strong enough to do this when my grandma passed. I was just too emotional. They are very strong to have to grieve in the present of the public.

    You have to feel for Viscount Linley here. Remember, he'd buried his mother, Princess Margret only a couple of months before this. :-(

      kiwibeca that’s right. I forgot about that. She not only buried her husband, but one of her daughters in her other daughter’s golden jubilee year.

    But did you know...Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was not the only daughter-in-law of King George V to live to be 102? Princess Alice, the wife of Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester, George V's third son, died in 2004 also at the age of 102. Amazing longevity in the women of the House of Windsor.

    • @nunyabiznez6381
      @nunyabiznez6381 8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Yes it is. On a side note, it is interesting to point out that she may be the only queen consort and possibly the only member of any royal family to live during three different centuries. She was born in 1900 which technically (just ask any astronomer) is part of the 19th century and she lived the entire duration of the 20th century and then died in the 21st century.

    • @babacar3519
      @babacar3519 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      yeah except these women are added to the house of Windsor and NOT from the house of Windsor and not related to each other so their longevity has no connection to either the house of Windsor or to each other so really 2 broads lived a long loooong time whoop dee doo

    I'm sure the four grandsons of the Queen Mother (and her two granddaughters, who did not participate in the vigil) felt her loss very acutely, but my heart especially went out to Viscount Linley and his sister Lady Sarah, who had recently lost their mother as well.

    We loved the Queen Mum in our house. My own grandmother resembled her greatly. My mother once remarked when people were angry with the Queen for not displaying emotion after Diana's death that she wouldn't and couldn't show emotion when her own mother passes away, but in private she will be devastated. I think that must have been true, despite the Queen Mum's long life. After all was said and done, she was a beloved mother.

    Such ceremony brings me to tears. I just love royalty and the ceremonies of the United Kingdom. Many Australians still remain loyal to our original roots.

    • @chrisraisin5587
      @chrisraisin5587 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      To the person (anonymously naming him/herself "12345") who replied to my comment (and whose response has obviously been removed from this site because of it's disrespect both to my opinion and the people of the United Kingdom ), the British and the Royal Family still have feelings for Australians I am sure. We have never done anything to offend them (nor they us) and we have fought together as a people against common foes. We are all still part of the British Commonwealth. We are all human beings living on the one planet and we are ALL really related to one another in some way. Let me enjoy the ceremony if I wish....please

    • @chrisraisin5587
      @chrisraisin5587 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Again another response from that person who showed more disrespect to me by calling me names. Well, there is no need to reply because I have removed your comment links so I will never see them again (and you should be ashamed to admit to being British with comments like that to someone you do not even know). Matter settled, and spite of what malice you have towsrds your fellow man I wish you good luck in life.

    LUCKILY this one Augusta, GA guy happened to be in London that Easter Weekend 2002 when the Queen Mother passes away. It was incredible. I queued the 4 miles around the Thames to pass the casket in the video. The spotlights on those CROWN Jewels were blinding. Words do no good. And neither am I over her Memorial Service in St Paul's Cathedral, London open to all. We even practiced the hymns to be perfect for the BBC worldwide broadcast of the service led by the Bishop of London!! And to think she was 102, and there I happen to be!!!
    It even gets better. Earlier I saw Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in the week leaving Holy Thursday services at Cantebury Cathedral. Perish the thought, but I was so close to her Rolls, I could have tapped on the limo's windows. I sure got my money's worth on the trip to Britain!! Go, don't miss it.

    Noel Coward and the Queen Mother were attending a function together. Noel started eyeing up some of the guards and the Queen Mother noticed him doing so. She slyly murmured to him “Don’t bother Noel, they count them before they put them out.” A fabulous lady and forward thinking for her time.

    R.I.P. Tom Fleming. One of Scotland's greatest actors, writers and commentators. I especially enjoyed his commentary in the Edinburgh Military Tatoos during 40 years of broadcasting. Hwu Edwards is a wonderful successor to Mr. Fleming as he handled William and Kate's Royal Wedding. I happened to watch it on BBC America, by the way.

    Irrespective of whether anyone is a monarchist/royalist this shows perfectly how we Brits lead the world in Pomp & Circumstance.The Queen Mother was admired & respected throught the world for her unfailing duty to her nation & it's people,beside her husband & latterly at her daughter's side.Personally,I'm not in any way 'loyal' to the crown but the QM was given a right royal send off.

    HM, the Queen Mother earned my utmost respect for her courage during World War II, determined to stay in the United Kingdom with HM, King George VI, despite the danger to the Royal Family. “The Princesses won’t leave without me, I won’t leave without the King, the King won’t leave”.

    Eternal rest. She & her husband were stout hearted in WWII. Britain w/ the Commonwealth did truly stand alone athwart Hitler. It was those long months alone which saved the world from Hitler. The rest of the world was ready to role over & play like a whipped puppy. I that has much to do w/ why Britain resisted any effort towards a republic in the intervening years. I doubt Charles will command the same respect.
    A wonderful scene despite the pompous announcer.

    Got that right,the monarchy may be symbolic,but the true reality is when the monarchy wants something done,does not have to be political in nature either,it gets done..They have the true power of the people behind them,and that is why Great Britain still is truly the #1 superpower,even the US bows in honor and dignity towards the Queen and it is as it should be and has been..we all would not be here without their stout support and defense.

    I attended Her Majesty's Lying in State. As we shuffled down the stairs we were held quietly. The room was absolutely still. The next 4 immaculate Cavalrymen came out in perfect step from the stone steps to the side and the guardch anged silently. We were then allowed forward but no one moved. We just stood there. An American I had been talking with earlier and explaining some of the historical matters said quietly 'Now THAT is how you Brits show the rest of us how to do respect'. And its true.
