I was the tour bus driver in 1992 for the uk leg of their tour, and all 5 of them were pure gents. I drove many famous artists around the uk and europe but none come close to these guys. They were the only ones i ever missed in all the years i did that job. Ali kept in touch via e mail and never mentioned he was ill, As for Melvyn i dont know how he injured his knee but i remember on the tour he needed a couple of pain killing jabs and they never missed a show because of it. Pure Class.
this is truly beautiful. Ali-Ollie Woodson did a wonderful job singing bottom. I thought it was Melvin at first. This rendition I think is better than the one they recorded live in 1965. Melvin is booming his bass all around heaven, and Eddie is chirping like a bird. David is shouting. God tellin them alright now yall making to much noise up here. lol My boy Blue. There never be another Melvin.
Me too. He also had a great heart and soul. I went to see the group live 20 years ago and sadly he was home recovering from throat surgery. This clip lets people know how talented he was.
I don’t care what members of the temptations sing this song past or present they “ jam” this cut and Melvin just Blow this one. They Killed it. R. I. P. To All The Members That Have Passed On!!!
Oct.12th: Happy birthday R&B-Soul Singer Melvin Franklin of The Temptations (1942-1995) Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. Thank you and God bless. RIP "Blue." Thanks for the upload, whatiship73. Blessings
I love motown and especially the Temps. But the best group ever? They are one of the best for sure. But they did not write any of their music.... so I will have to rate them behind the groups that did.
And, it just hit me that this is what distinguishes the Tempts from their peers. To my knowledge, the OJays, Spinners, Stylistics, etc. didn't tacke standards as part of their routine. Tempts pride themselves on their versatility and taking on a good challenge; it appears their goal was to do their own music and anybody else's better than the originals.
Absolutely!!!! He might have done it as good as Ruffin did on the album!! Wasnt a fan when Dennis did bass on this one...he sounded goofy and out of shape
I am generally not given to hyperbole or false claims, but it is hard not to consider this the greatest assembly of vocal talent ever. There is always the possiblity that there are some totally unknown guys out there who can do this, but I'd have to see it to believe it. That said, I'd love to see the Woodson/Peoples/McGilberry unit doing this, but there don't seem to be many videos of them in existence.
well the Spinners DEFINITELY did since the beginning of their careers even when they were with Motown and even more so after they left....check out the Spinners Live album & see for yourself
@The022450 I do sing, play, write and produce quite well. Now after viewing the video for the first time, I agree with you. Ali is singing bottom in that background. I stand to be corrected.
Hey I'm currently piecing together a video profiling great bass singers for a college class, and was wondering if you could possibly e-mail this to me?
Why oh why don't they make 'em like this anymore? The Temps had their personal problems as we all know......but they never presented themselves to the public without showing class and style. That's what's wrong today. No self- respect for themselves let alone the viewing audience. Their music and style will live forever..........
@ laidyeh-Ali Ollie Woodson did not sing bottom. He was a natural tenor. Melvin sang all bass parts. He alone had that quality and depth to sing like that.
Watch the video...Ollie did sing bottom on the first part of this song...as did David Ruffin and Dennis Edwards before him. In this song the Tepmts did switch between 4 and 5 part harmony.
to lgp1987, sorry it took me so long to send this to you. I just realized you sent me your e-mail address. Are you going to post this on you tube? Good luck.
To Me112233-You seem to have a lot to say about the Tempts engaging a classic song. Just for kicks and giggles, I Googled James Hyter. Are you serious. The Tempts version made this a song that a good majority of people would not even listen to let alone like it. I couldn't get into Mr. Hyter-but since you dig him, listen to him and enjoy. But don't ever say the Temptations, possibly the greatest male vocal group ever, look like a bunch of clowns. Don't mess with the Tempts.
But this isn't better than the original, or the modern equivalent by James Hyter. Perhaps the O'Jays, Spinners, Stylistics, and others recognized the genre at which they excelled, and were content and smart enough to stick to what they did best.
@022450-You know nothing of what you speak. I had family members that once worked for Motown (Billy Davis and Sonny Sanders). Ali came in to replace Dennis at lead tenor. Melvin was the only bass singer to sing bottom. BASS IS BOTTOM!
just youtube for james hyter . . . then these guys will look like a bunch of wanna-be clowns . . . they need to go back to singing pop, and forget this classic
Me112233 those wanna- be clowns went around the world at least 10 times with their awesome Talent so don't put the Temps down. We laugh at silly comments like yours because we wonder what are you listening to. We hear and see one thing but of course you and other people that criticize them here and see something totally different. Or maybe it's just jealousy and hatred for men that surpassed even what they thought they could do.
Big ups also to Ollie Woodson and Richard Street...they really made that harmony stick out!
Best Harmonizing Quintet in history 🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤
You Got That Right, Brother War
What amazing voices touch deep down in your soul words can't explain
RIP melvin ... he's easily the greatest bass singer ever
Most charismatic easily.

Your father *killed this song. Was ***phenomenal. ❤
Ollie comes closer to David than any of the others but still lacks that something and David's class and moves
Those shoes can't be filled.

Richard Street snd Ollie Woodson were teo extremely handsome and talented men. Rest Eternally.
This was in 1991 because Boyz II Men greeted them at the end of it.
Melvin's the greatest.
What happened to music today. These guys were my favorite. Had the Anthology album and loved every song!!!!!!
legendary group of all time
I don’t care what members of the temptations sing this song past or present they “ jam” this cut and Melvin just Blow this one. They Killed it. R. I. P. To All The Members That Have Passed On!!!

I sure missed Melvin Franklin RIH!!
Melvin Franklin, one of the three greatest singers of all time (along with Otis Williams and Ali Ollie Woodson)...
Are you still on TH-cam?
This is an awesome vid. Melvin looks so good there, its hard to believe that he'd die only a few years later. RIP Ol' Blue
What kind of person would dislike this !!??!!
phenomenal!
Love best group ever

Melvin was the best bass ever.
When Melvin wasn't singing, Ollie killed that bass, too!! Ollie was equally as talented with that bass!!
Absolutely!!!! He might have done it as good as Ruffin did on the album!! Wasnt a fan when Dennis did bass on this one...he sounded goofy and out of shape
ANYONE ELSE OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER BLUE SINGING THIS ON ED SULLIVAN? or am i dreaming. my dad loved this song and his bass and was so thrilled.
miss you melvin
THE ONLY MELVIN, NOBODY I MEAN NOBODY CAN SING LIKE THIS MAN
Never ever be another Blue.
...somethings wrong with my eyes...they seem to be leaking water! Straight harmony Y'all!
Wow this is awesome!, watch Lawrence Beaman in his audition video for america's got talent, it's awesome ;)
Amen!!!!
God Blue killed it! Melvin has always been my favorite Temp. Also, was that boyz ii men that came on afterwards. I love them too haha :)
That's them.

What is Richard Street saying?
BTW - I love Richard Street
Richard Street is saying “Gettin' no rest from the dawn till sunset”
Classic
This Aresenio show was recorded in 1989.
92
I saw Ray Davis sing this as a solo 1968/69. He, too, was dressed in do-wop red and when Otis passed away, Ray took his place.
Otis didn't die melvon did
They haven't sung this song since Melvin passed away in '95.
Cuz no one else is able to sing it like him
not sure that is correct. I seem to recall Joe Herndon trying it.
And I was at a Temps concert in the early-2000s where Harry McGilberry sang it too
They sung it with ray davis also
@lgp1987 Yep, 'cuz if datz Boyz II Men huggin' dem, it has 2 be sumtime around 1991.
To take a phase from Charlie Daniels,
"That's how it's done son".
Those six dislikes must be deaf

Hey I'm currently piecing together a video profiling great bass singers for a college class, and was wondering if you could possibly e-mail this to me?
also everybody can take the mic and sing lead whenever they want and every time, they will bring down the house.
Why oh why don't they make 'em like this anymore? The Temps had their personal problems as we all know......but they never presented themselves to the public without showing class and style. London Parris was the best Bass singer.J.D. Sumner was and is the deepest Bass he made this guy sound like a tenor.
TheDixieBassMan what about The Chief he seemed to be every southern gospel bass singers including JD Sumners favorite bass singer
