  • I did some solo backpacking on Bradley Fork and Cabin Flats trails in the Smokemont Campground area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and stayed at backcountry campsite 49 off Cabin Flats. I ran into fellow hikers, Christina and Sid at the campsite. This is a 10 mile out and back hike with relatively low elevation and a very nice hike in the woods along Bradley Fork creek.

    Skin so soft has a 4 oz. bug guard plus with SPF 30. It works great and moisturizes while your wearing it. It comes in a pump bottle. Works great for Sand nats, nats and mosquitoes.

    Hello new friend! We are also in the area! I love solo backpacking! Planning a trip with a friend in December. I think we are going to Virgin Falls

    You absolutely did the right thing when sharing the trail with horses. From a former horse owner, for your safety and the rider and horse' safety, the best action to take is step off or to the side of the trail and stop. I (Barbara) have binge watched all of your videos, some multiple times and I think I will be ready to take a solo trip soon!! I love backpacking and hiking with Craig, but I really want to venture out on my own occasionally and the same for him!! Thanks for doing what you do!

    Great video Gretchen! I laughed when you said you liked your campsite because it had chairs? I said what chairs? Those are rocks! 😂 Got a kick out of all your interesting food choices too. I know these videos are time consuming and a lot of work to make so thanks for making them!👍👌

      Hiking with Braids It was great! I went to Desoto Falls in Georgia and did both short trails they have there. It was about 2.25 miles total. I got a new pack and wanted to try it out. At one point I kept thinking I heard someone walking up on me only to realize it was something moving on my pack. 🤣 After I had a good laugh at myself, it was smooth sailing. 😆

    Gretchen, you make backpacking look easy, great tips. Picardin is good stuff, it won't stain or weaken fabrics and eat into plastics like most DEET products do (ever see what it does to sun glasses?). Great video from an awesome place, by an awesome person. Thank You, Cheers!

    I absolutely love this campsite but have only day hiked to it so far. This was a great overview of what it's like camping there. I've always worried that it would feel cramped, even with the generous amount of space, since I know it's a popular one. Your video helps me realize that there's plenty of room for folks to have their own little "nook."
    P.S. I think I will probably eat about 1,000 extra calories today with absolutely no justification for it, after watching you unpack that yummy food bag! ;-)

    Thanks for the video. Looks like a great place to camp. I am actually glad to see the ranger ask about the permit. Though I backpack infrequently, I have never had to show a permit and have begun to wonder does it matter. Particularly when I have seen 17 people in a campsite for 12.

    Loved this video! And it was soo good to see you, that day. 😊 You had a crazy amount of traffic at the beginning of your hike...I was completely alone just a few hours prior to your start. After the ranger asked to see your permit, I was surprised that no body came down to do more checks. I was smart enough to bring my paper reservation, this time (I forgot for my trip thr previous weekend), but your idea to take a photo of it....I'm gonna do that too.
    I loved that site...I can't wait to get back there!

    I'm curious.. do you need the permit to hike or just to camp? I was under the impression it was just to camp. We dont get to hike in the Smokies a lot.

    • @HikingwithBraids
      @HikingwithBraids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! You only need a permit to stay overnight. ☺️ it’s $4 per person in the backcountry and if you stay at one of the campgrounds it ranges between $18 - $23 per night per site.
