@@TheRob2D there are still some things in FreeCAD/Ondsel ES 2024.3-dev that don't work quite that well.. but ironically, it is still very usable software .
Huge thanks to the FreeCAD developers, and to those who make FreeCAD tutorial videos. Hopefully the user interface is much more stable now. One of the biggest impediments to adopting and using FreeCAD was outdated tutorials that were useless because the user interface and even the way some feature works completely changed from one version to the next. I've been using FreeCAD for my CAD for several years and it has greatly improved.
I've been using FreeCAD ever since I started doing 3D printing some 5 years ago. I'm still a novice with the software, but these are certainly some very exciting changes! This project is a testament to what can be achieved by the open source community.
I'm just so happy. After getting used to F360 and then being shafted by them, I was really sad, and freecad 0.21 just was not doing it! Now, Finally it would seem it works as it should.
I use FreeCAD 20 and have beenbusingbit for years and I can send the STL files straight to my FlashForge Creator Pro or zoom them to Blender to do a demo. With FREECAD you have FEM and CFD the data can be exported to Blender or you could use open foam to run your models or pick up R with you could run either from R Studio or VSCode.
These improvements are great! I was using FreeCAD for a couple years, but became frustrated with TNP and other model breaking issues. I recently switched to Solidworks for Makers. If more quality improvements are added at a good pace, I might return to FreeCAD in the near future. Choosing between a free open source application and one that requires an expensive perpetual license is a no brainer. Model breaking issues are a deal-breaker to me, I don't mind having less features in free software compared to paid software.
@@MrLelopes A perpetual Solidworks license costs thousands of dollars, it will pay for itself if you use it professionally. For hobby projects it is way too expensive! I agree that companies should atleast offer a perpetual license option.
@htpkey still pretty good. Professional architects needs to pay ever raising subscription in the 2k-6k range of fees to work. Without any real improvement from the software or with improvements we don't want.
@@MrLelopes True. With subscription services there is little incentive to improve the software, the customer pays to use the product. With perpetual license you are paying for an upgrade.
To be fair, it's easy to create models that break in any CAD software, but I can't say I've looked into TNP or really even FreeCAD. Good modeling methodology is the basis of stable models, but it did seem like FreeCAD were missing some basic, and absolutely necessary functions compared to other systems.
I hope they will solve the TNP problem completely in the future. It is a lot better now but not completely solved. If you make a cube for example and you put 4 chamfers or fillets on it and then you put a pocket on a face and you remove a chamfer or fillet you still have a problem.
I doubt it'll ever be properly fixed, but if they do like SolidWorks and implement a quick and easy way to fix broken models that would be a big help as well. I also hope they implement more of RealThunders improvements, like extruding from existing faces of geometry without having to sketch.
@@kylequinn1963I'm a long-time realthunder user and am not familiar with the functionality you cited. What does it mean to extrude from an existing face without sketching?
@guyflament566, Did you check in version 1.0RC1 or in version 0.22dev? Because in version 0.22dev, there were still some problems. In version 1.0RC1 it is much better. And what you are talking about works for me and there is no problem.
Blah blah cosmetic nice to have efficiency improvements but … the elephant in the room is the TNP! Any review of 1.0 should lead with this - it is the number one issue holding back FreeCAD adoption. I’ve wasted more time due to broken modules thanks to TNP than I’ll ever gain from improvements to sketcher. Fingers crossed they got this solved.
"a lot of problems have been fixed" … and new ones were integrated. :-/ For example, they broke helix in Part Design WB. Still looking fwd for some fixes…
@@CADCAMLessons Right, just a RC. I was just expecting that some well known bugs in one of the most popular workbenches were already fixes at this point of time.
FreeCad 1.0 RC1 still carrying the issue of SWEEP a Helix with ExtendedCurve:Straight at the vertex. It takes a very long time (minutes) then comes up with a twisted sweep. In some cases, it does not do that if you do Sweep without Frenet, but then the whole Sweep twist on the path. It is easy to duplicate, just Sketch an ARC with 3 points, anysize and angle, then use CURVES workbench to ExtendCurve, 10mm, Straight. Then in Sketch create a Triangle shape perpendicular to the curve, to be the sweep Profile in Parts Workbench, using the curve as the Sweep Path. Without the ExtendedCurve:Straight it does nicely, with the ExtendedCurve it messes everything. It seems the ExtendedCurve inserts the extension backwards in the path, and Sweep got lost. Interesting that if the ExtendedCurve is set to 2GCurve and enter the right length for the curve to bend inwards, it always works, even being much more complicated for the Sweep. Nice things on 1.0, now when you rotate the graphics part using mouse, where the mouse is becomes the center of rotation with a pink dot on screen. You don't need to click mouse wheel anymore to set the center of rotation. Not so nice, when using Transform to move the graphics part, sometimes takes several seconds after you press ESC or OK to end the transformation. Thanks for the review.
Ya, i have the same issue. i use those features to make a complex coil spring shape, I ended up made my own python script to generate the sweep shape (through Part workbench)
I thought with the solving of the TNP importing geometry into sketches would also not break when changing previous steps, but alas, this is not the case (at least it was not in the weekly build a few weeks ago).
Yeah, thinking of 1.0 seems premature. I follow the issues being opened and honestly it still looks like too many fundamental issues come up. And I really wish there were some concerted usability initiative for solving the large amount of minor issues that existed for years, such as drag & drop in the tree often breaking everything, or consistently showing shortcuts in tooltips, or the sketcher constraint issues. Many of these issues have survived even through major redesigns of the features and just leave a sour taste for every new user not knowing how to work around them.
I don't follow the reported issues closely, I've only been using FreeCAD since version 0.17. In my opinion, this is huge progress. As for whether it's too early for version 1.0 or not, it doesn't matter to me. What matters is that FreeCAD is developing and fixes are being introduced regularly. FreeCAD doesn't have to be for everyone. We have a choice - we can spend a few hundred dollars on another program (for an annual license), or we can accept that FreeCAD may have some issues :)
I wouldn't mind using FreeCAD, but the one built for my Raspberry Pi 4 doesn't work. I have an 8GB Pi 4 and use a pre-built one. I hope v1.0 will work on the Pi.
Ondsel uses FreeCAD, but not everything is implemented in Ondsel. Why the jump from 0.21 to 1.0 ? Why not 0.3? Do they really think they have made big enough improvements to justify that? That would be amazing if true. If it's an exaggeration this could really hurt the project. I'm hoping this is not a marketing stunt.
this is definitely the biggest change freeCAD has had in a long time. the big ones being midpoints, offsets and the TNP I have seen many commenters over time talk about how these 3 features were what was holding them back from freeCAD.
