For all other tall people here, I'm 1.93m, with long arms and torso. And when I started playing flamenco about 11 years ago, I copied the cross-legged posture of Paco. I had tried the traditional flamenco posture sporadically before but always abandoned, as I thought it makes picados, arpeggios.. etc harder. But about 2 years ago I started seriously practicing playing in it, and I had a break through.... My experience is that it's all an illusion, after sticking with it for a few months, my body adapted to the traditional posture which I now find superior in every possible way. I can now play things like Guajiras de Lucia and Plaza Alta no problem... And of course, you don't get lower back pain and your legs don't fall asleep, you can hear your instrument better and get better feed back and also the back of the guitar vibrates better, switching right hand positions between thumb techniques and finger style techniques becomes more intuitive, your left hand moves easier along the neck when the neck is that higher, and overall I find that one becomes more emotionally connected to the guitar in the traditional posture. I think Juan Martin was spot on when he said in his book, and I'm paraphrasing, that (even if you don't end up playing in it all the time), mastering the traditional posture is a must for any flamenco player.
It's unbelievable how you cover all the topics that are so important and with such an understanding and ability to explain and teach them with such a clarity! Thank you! I was just these days struggling with posture as I understood that I'm not having good one and this cleared alot now! My arm has big distance from shoulder to elbow and from elbow to wrist, but you made it so clear and now I understand my own anatomy better! Thank you brother, perfect lessons!
That has always been my main problem with guitar, the posture. As a tall guy, 1,93 m, i have to take off my arm even for some arpegios and rasgeado. So now i m playing crossing the other leg , and i m more balanced , less twisted... Paco revolutionazed the guitare crossing his right leg, now it s my turn !! Ah ah 👹👹👹 Good lesson Maestro, thanks.
I don't know how but it's the perfect timing for me getting these videos from you thus I've been trying to play flamenco since last few months and I'm getting the very important foundation blocks from a maestro😁 Thanks for the guidance and support you're providing internationally to us❤️ Really I'm very lucky to have TH-cam and such a generous guy teaching the techniques correctly and saving our years of finding the proper flavour of sound. It's really inspiring towards the journey😄
Hey Abid, thanks for watching, I am very happy that the videos I'm uploading are helping you in any way. I'll try to cover more subjects with time, I appreciate your trust in me. Have a great day! Luciano
Great video Luciano as always! The high of the chair also was mentioned in the tech rider list of Paco when he was on stage. The requirement high of the chair for him was 46-47 cm, no more, no less. So really important thing as you mentioned too :)
I have listened to this Solea from Paco like a million times, it's definitely my all-time favourite Solea ever really, no doubt! Maybe that's why? Haha Cheers!
Hello! depends on your back, how you are built, you can develop big problems on a long way to play legs crossed. Make sure to strech often and feel if your back is doing ok. So i bought a pad to put on my leg (any leg) and play without problem. The pad also prevents to use a footstand which can unbalanced your back and shoulders on a long period of time. I guess i was'nt naturally built to play guitar and i play all day long. This way i dont feel any pressure anywhere. I also use it (pad) for practicing electric guitar without a strap cause i started to have neck problems years ago. When i started to use the pad, all problems went away. I thought of saying cause i had a few little problems that prevent me to play like the flamenco positions. Even as a kid i had problem to have a good position at classical.
Gracias! I thought every time about posture, trying to understand, why I feel so uncomfortable when I try to sit like Paco, and now I know why and what to do)
Not everyones anatomy or guitars are the same, therefore sometimes what is "good" technique for me may actually be "bad" technique for you. 🙏 Thank you for this Luciano! Saludos!
I would be very happy if you can do more falseta tutorials too , they are very useful ! unlike classical or any other genre of music , flamenco doesn't have that much of tutorials on the web.
Thank you so much for all this effort maestro! You are amazing as always and tremendously helpful to many people. I always use crossed leg and I got many times numb leg during performances.. I would say in all performances I was not playing classical with the classical position. This video was a joy to watch! Jeronimo Maya who is also VERY tall uses a crossed leg but not so much close to the ankle but closer to the knee to manage less leg tension, numbness and optimum height of the guitar. It has helped me a lot with shorter chairs. Anyway.. Muchas Gracias por todo maestro! Salud y un abrazo fuerte!
Thank you for watching as always Andreas! I didn't know Jeronimo Maya is tall! I also do that by the way, I keep the knee closer, it feels more comfortable for me, Paco used to put the ankle closer, it's another thing which I didn't mention in this video about Paco's body, but he had also pretty short legs, he can control way easier don't you agree? His anatomy was just perfect for guitar really from head to toe.. Un abrazo!
Having the guitar at an angle is difficult for picado unless you have very short arms. Your elbow is closer to the body meaning you can hold it without effort easier. Classical guitarists use this position so they have an optimal paralel shape of the left hand and the neck. Thats why they always have such beautiful finger placement on the neck, and their fingers get less bunched up, making it easier to play notes more clearly.
Amigo, one of the best videos around and on a topic that I have always wondered why nobody teaches. And really precioso sonido flamenco el tuyo! I am a vocalist from Granada, though I also play guitar. one thing I think I do not do right is the right-hand position (I create too much angle on the wrist, like a crane). Could you do a tutorial about it or can I take a lesson about that with you. Abrazos desde NYC
There is a fourth posture used by Serranito and Oscar Herrero. Great video, I have long arms and I have to lift the elbow for keeping a manageable wrist. Can I ask you something? Do you think mechanical exercises are necessary or you can get the technique from the Palos and pieces? Thanks
Thank you very much 👍 Very very useful information.. Would you please make a video about finger nails (lengths, shape.....etc). If u have time of course Again, thank you
I can tell you.. day in day out I have trouble figuring out what's the perfect position... :) Thumbs up, If you feel like the guitar could be constructed in another way to fit better to the players need. (Not talking about traditional positions with little stools).
Very nice video. Some different aspects covered. I would not be surprised if Paco's body developed in a manner that allowed him to play the way he did, particularly considering the fact he practiced in a non-human level.
Thank you very much Luciano for making this video, I was waiting for it ❤️ this is the BEST FLAMENCO CHANNEL I’VE EVER SEEN ( I mean it), I never saw this analyzing in other channel before! you are a Maestro!!! ❤️
Very nice video and important topics that are rarely discussed especially the part about the chair since it makes all the difference when playing cross legged. I hope that you make a separate video on what to look for when choosing flamenco chair and how to determine the chair height based on ones anatomy. BTW, I never thought of Paco having huge hands and they're definitely smaller than Vincent's Amigo's, Grisha Goryachev's and yours I think:)
Thank you Duraid! Paco's hands are HUGE! I would imagine like 20% bigger than mine. I don't know about Grisha or Vicente's size of hands, but Paco was indeed enormous. Haha Cheers!
@@LucianoGhosn I think the impression that I have about his hand size comes from the cover of the album "Paco de Lucía interpreta a Manuel de Falla " which kind of indicates a maximum stretch for his left hand. But hey.. it's not a proof and I never shook his hand:)
So right! We never talk about the anatomy of players. If you are super tall or have long arms you are at such a disadvantage. I have long arms and Big hands. If you are tall with long arms you need almost perfect upright posture to do picados... or hike your elbow up to like 90° So good for analyzing this. Tall people with long arms are at such a disadvantage. You really need to be short person with a small length of arms and Huge hands I think. But if you have a long spine you are at a disadvantage I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I think Paco had great anatomy. Not too tall, short arms and big hands
hi thanks a lot it's very helpful ! i'm still a student that can't get a flamenco guitar very expansive here in my country ! i have only a classical guitar ! am i able to play flamenco or is it useless to try some modification on the guitar ! cause picado and alzapua ! looks very difficult ! Another great informative video Luciano keep em coming. I found the the arm comparison very interesting my arms are the same as Pacos but I have a wide palm but short fingers so picado for me doesn’t work like pacos keeping the thumb in facing down and the palm flat I have to have a slight arch and thumb out and that feels comfortable to me I’ve also found having short fingers when carrying out abanico I cannot get the power as much as someone with long fingers Final word I’m loving these videos and again the intro piece amazing loving the use of those chords
No problem Chris, thanks for watching! Don't worry about copying Paco's thumb, only do it if it makes you feel comfortable really, if not, then leave it just like Vicente does as well. Glad you're enjoying the videos! Cheers!
one important related question would be : how to practice fast picado without injury ? i find myself getting an injury once i start to hit 16th notes at 150 bpm approx. then i need to rest my hands for a few days to recover ( i can still play with a pick, just not fingers) & i find my speed has slowed again. did u face this & how do u overcome this?
You picado is great. There are tips of picado like paco, vicente or javier conde. You should do a video about it. People love picado. You know it because you love picado too!!
To my knowledge this is the first video talking not only about posture but also about anatomy in flamenco. Speaking of anatomy, Vicente's fingers have an unusual quality in that the top joint can kind of bend backwards. I find it really odd to look at how he does picados, for instance. I am not sure if such a large degree of backward joint mobility is helpful, but he sure plays like the great master that he is.
Glad you enjoyed this video too Hierro! Yes his fingers are indeed special, and this bending in his finger (bending the first joint when playing), will result in sweeter sound. He is indeed a great Master. Cheers!
Luciano! Thanks a lot for the tips and Videos , they are all very helpfull.. i have a request if i may 😄 could you make a Video talking about nails? And does the length of fingers is different depending on the hands size and Fingers length? I have Long fingers and cant find the right nails length with which i play comfortably... Shukran kteer:) saludos
Thanks for watching Faud! I have been getting a lot of these requests lately, I'll do it when the time is right for sure. Yes, length of the fingers are independent from the size of your hand really, sometimes you can have small hands (Palms) but very long fingers, or vice versa. Cheers!
Nice to see you playing.. But *For TH-cam.. Please.. Why "copyright Claim".... Sometimes i hate youtube. I hope youtube next generation, make special permission/to grant cover song permission to *your magneficien sound playing*. Because this is just a cover that resembles a song -solea paco-. not to pirate songs from the artist.... Keep going Luciano, always support you.💪
Maestro, in the second position you have to hold the guitar when doing picado anyway right? Because it sounds as if you solve the picado problem of the classical position of having to hold when doing picado but in my case it keeps falling... Hope I explained myself and congrats for the videos!
Yes I understand what you meant, in the traditional way of playing, when you're doing Picado it's very difficult to hold the guitar.. That's why I almost never use this position. I have to hold the guitar from the left hand when I do Picado and it becomes very inconvenient. Thank you for watching the videos, glad you're enjoying them! Cheers!
All of the guitars he ever played in his life, and the ones we see in the photos happen to be like this? Impossible. But I get what you're saying. Cheers!
Right the green, red flamenco chair are horrible for playing 😂. Check manuel silveria, he is tall , dont cross legs and have very curious position. But he play very very well. Sube subtitles in spanish amigo.
Thanks for the remarks on moving the guitar around too much. I find it to look very forced, pretentious even, at times. Even with some maestros... I'm not into the "show" aspect of music a lot, as I think it can distract from the essence of what is being played. Minimal is key, in my opinion.

one important related question would be : how to practice fast picado without injury ? i find myself getting an injury once i start to hit 16th notes at 150 bpm approx. then i need to rest my hands for a few days to recover ( i can still play with a pick, just not fingers) & i find my speed has slowed again. did u face this & how do u overcome this?
lo tocas como el Maestro increible tio enhorabuena
Muchas gracias Marcos!
You picado is great. There are tips of picado like paco, vicente or javier conde. You should do a video about it. People love picado. You know it because you love picado too!!
I'll consider, heavy video it will be Haha
Yes, I love Picado, and hate it sometimes...
Cheers!
@@LucianoGhosn hahaha I know the feeling...I love and hate sometimes too...but the love its still bigger...cheers!
Thank you!
You're welcome, and thank you for watching!
Never mind forget me... look here! XD omg man you're so fun and cheerful!
😆
Cheers!
How tall is Vincente Amigo?
Cheers!
Thank you, Maestro
Could you please make a tutorial on Palmas and how to play along with compass?
Thank you again
I'll keep the suggestion in mind, thank you!
@@LucianoGhosn Thank you Thank you
Nice to see you playing..
Keep going Luciano, always support you.💪
Thanks! I hope they can do that too, but it's ok for now..
Thank you for your support Krotus!
Cheers!
Helo, flamenco setrings ?
Knobloch, low tension nylon strings.
Cheers!
Maestro, in the second position you have to hold the guitar when doing picado anyway right?
Because it sounds as if you solve the picado problem of the classical position of having to hold when doing picado but in my case it keeps falling...
Hope I explained myself and congrats for the videos!
I meant traditional position!
Cheers!
@@LucianoGhosn but, do you actually hold the guitar in the second position?
@@diegomenesessanchez2159 Yes, I would have to hold it in that case.
@@LucianoGhosn thank you for your time maestro!
Cheers
Diego de oro guitar support is the best for me
Sounds good!
Maybe the size of the guitar Paco uses {bigger and deeper body} contributed to his arm and wrist looking straighter .
All of the guitars he ever played in his life, and the ones we see in the photos happen to be like this? Impossible.
But I get what you're saying.
Cheers!
Si pudieras poner mas que sea subtitulos en español. T lo agradeceria un monton👍
Me lo pensaré, mi Español no es nativo, necesito a alguien que me lo hace. Creo para el futuro seria buena idea.
Saludos!
@@LucianoGhosn ok 😊 ojala sea pronto maestro 👍

De nada amigo.
En Español también sería super interesante.
Como dije antes, es difícil complacer a todos, pero pensare para el futuro!
Gracias por ver el video, saludos!
Right the green, red flamenco chair are horrible for playing 😂.
Check manuel silveria, he is tall , dont cross legs and have very curious position. But he play very very well.
Sube subtitles in spanish amigo.
Grande.... Per piacere potresti qualche volta se puoi parlare in Italiano... Siamo in minoranza nel mondo ma sempre i numeri 1.
fuck you play really good.
La postura dei maestri :herrero, monge, e caño é la migliore
E sabicas
Thanks for the remarks on moving the guitar around too much. I find it to look very forced, pretentious even, at times. Even with some maestros... I'm not into the "show" aspect of music a lot, as I think it can distract from the essence of what is being played. Minimal is key, in my opinion.
True, sometimes it's nice to add a small spice to the show by moving sightly according to what you're playing, but not all the time, indeed.
Cheers!
