  • Auroras dancing bright over Fairbanks, Alaska! This solar storm was absolutely amazing and I continue to be amazed by all the colors that showed up! This is recorded in real time with a Sony A7siii and Sony 14mm F1.8 GM! Never stop looking up!

    Gosh I can't get over all the colors in this one! This needs more views!!! You really have a great capture here (I'm clearly going through an aurora videos binge-watching craze at the moment)

    for some of us at lower latitudes (39) we may not know how fast these things can move. This far south, when they are visible, don't seem to be dancing! Until I saw "real time", not "time-lapse", videos posted I had no idea these things would move so fast! I always wondered why still photo's looked out-of-focus - now I know - it's because these things are really moving! Thanks for the "real time" posts! PS, are the clicks at about 0:33 associated with the aurora? Can't be a rattlesnake!

    Did you do anything to make it more vivid?? Those are some INTENSE colors. Such vibrant pinks!

    Gorgeous! Love those dancing colors, even some reds!
    May I ask what Picture Profile you used (or if no Picture profile, what color settings?)
    Still trying some things out with the a7s3 for best low-light settings.
    And maybe an amateur question😅
    But what white balance do you use shooting the aurora?

    • @cnlastro-andywitteman2637
      @cnlastro-andywitteman2637  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't use any picture profile :) and my white balance is set to 3800k for every clip I post (I try to keep it consistent so the changes in color can be noticed from clip to clip, like the night when the auroras decided to turn red for example!

    Are there any Northern Lights tours in Alaska with accommodation etc?

    What iso? Wonder how close my A7riii can get.

      an A7r cant, unfortunately! all full frames have the same 35mm sensor, so high MP cameras like the A7r series are slow when it comes to lowlight! All the 35mm cameras capture (roughly) the same amount of light, the only difference being newer or older generations of sensors. An A7 spreads that light across 24 mp, so thats a good average baseline. The A7r spreads that light across 40mp, so each pixel gets about half the amount of light. The A7s spreads it across 12mp, making each pixel collect twice the amount of light as the A7, and 3 times (ish) of the A7r! In other words, it would take an A7 twice the amount of exposure time to get the same amount of light, and A7r 3-4 times! The relationship isnt quite that linear, but pixel size is everything when it comes to low light video! Speed at the expense of detail, so I can shoot happily at 32000iso with little noise, its not really noticeable at all until 50k and even then I can use 64k at night with little trouble! But for photography, a small MP camera isnt very good and definitely lacks detail. Good for social media and things like that, but I cant really do prints or anything big!

      I should add that my 1/24th shutter at 32000 would be equivalent to 1/24th at 100k for you for brightness, hypothetically anyway because iso is also invariant to a certain degree so thats a mess in itself. It would be more valid to say you could do 32000iso at like 1/4th shutter to keep it clean but that would be skippy, its a good way to do timelapses though (1/4th then speed it up to be silky smooth)!
