Oh man, that's tough. Sometimes therapy or honest conversations with loved ones can help a person through the kind of regret. I think practicing thankfulness as a lifestyle is also really important. It doesn't surprise me that James Joyce goes deep! 😂

Gratitude is a great practice! My son calls his journal his “happy thoughts journal “

Perfect story for St. Patrick’s Day! Some Irish who left for better opportunities come back for the holiday and meet friends and family who never left. Could be a joyful or resentful time depending on individual personalities and circumstances.

I look at other people’s videos and talks and am awed myself. It’s so cool to hear different takes and views on things 🙏

It's been so long that I barely remember this story, but I love the premise. It's real life.

"Thirty-five percent of the parents reported yelling at their children before they were 1. By the time the children were 4, 93 percent said they had." -Chandler is going through "comparatinitis."

I can’t figure out why the title of this story is called “A Little Cloud”. Did Joyce drop any hint that I didn’t notice? Someone please enlighten me. 😅

I’ve heard people discuss how the title acronym of LC is same initials as Little Chandler and how he’s a little cloud in the big sky of Dublin. Not sure if that’s what Joyce intended. I don’t recall off hand a mention in his biography or letters without pulling it up again myself.

Well, you already know my feeling on Dubliners as a whole. Some of my favorite short stories ever written are there. This one was quite terrifying when I first read it--it was as if its relatability was known but not yet experienced...minus the ending. haha. I also never cared too much for poetry.😅

Do you think that Gallagher and Little Chandler represents the English, as some Irish saw them, and those Irish who envied them but wanted to be like them?
The language Joyce uses to describe the Irish in the poor section of Dublin resembles the way many of the English described the Irish from Eliz I on. I.
I believe the characters in The Dead also reflect a division within the Irish population between those who copied the English and those who were more proudly Irish.
Could Joyce be holding Little Chandler (Certain Irish people) up for ridicule for his lack of appreciation for what he has and his envy of Gallagher (the English)?
It has been a long time since I read this so forgive me if I’m way off base.

Ah, great question. Because who is Joyce writing it for? And it’s obvious the he’s writing it on behalf of an Irishman and shares his views of the Irish Nationalism questions. Reminds me a bit of who we think we are vs what we are told we are. Maybe Chandler is a representative of not taking that step outside of that view while his friend has.
