Man, I have been listening to these guys from way back in the 70's. Great great stuff. Today's music just cannot compare. Wherher it be rock or country, you cannot tell one person or band from another. They all sound the same and the albums are all produced the same way. With the exception of a few. To me, the greatest decade for music was the seventies. Nobody sound like anybody else. Everyone had their own sound and style. Nobody sounded like the Aces, or Dire Straits, or Aerosmith, Pat Travers, and the list goes on. To me, there is no soul in music anymore, again, with the exception of a few. And that's too bad.
Well now, I'm a bit speechless!!! Thanks to who ever for posting this gem!!! I never tire of this band. NEVER!!! RIP RS!!!! Thank you for sharing your raw side with us all!!!
I’m 74 and have been a big fan for 50 years! This is the first time I ever saw them live. Thanks so much. I played music in bands for 25 years until arthritis took over. Music was good to us all! Duano
What a great video!! I’ve got all the guys autograph on my guitar I’ve owned since I was 14. I don’t have Barry Burtons autograph. Sadly he passed before I could get it. I saw at concert one Friday night. I drove about a 100 miles on the next night and after spending the night we ate breakfast at Cracker Barrel and they were there and I got to buy their breakfast. What a memory! I was at at massive music festival once with my Aces t shirt on and drunk guy came up to me and pointed at my shirt and said “that’s the best damn band that ever was or ever will be!” I still think that to this day. Rip in Russell Smith. Thank you for a life time of memories.
Loved watching this video. We were lucky to see the Aces at Knuckleheads, in Kansas City, MO on 11/11/11 for my birthday. We went there from San Diego, Ca knowing it could be our last opportunity to see Russell play. We went both nights and had a great time. The Aces were the best and are legendary musicians. Thanks for posting this video.
As Brooklyn boy Henry Miller said ‘you have to wade through a river of shit to find a gem of reality’ This is that gem! Take a bow whoever loaded this up.
My wife and I grew up on the Aces. Listen to them almost daily. They’re the # 1 band in our life. It’s so good to see something new on them. I’ve listened to them for right at 50 years and they never get old. Thanks for making this available. It’s already cherished. 41:37
Awesome band, proud of the fact that i have played drums on a few shows with this keyboard player Billy Earheart. A very good keyboard player and a good friend of mine.
Saw them for the first time at the Palomino Club in Los Angeles ... had to have been 1978 or 1979. Asleep at the Wheel opened. What a great show that was (only saw one other show at the Palomino -- Dan Hicks). Country was not my favorite genre, but the Aces are pretty hard to pigeonhole, style wise ... it's just soulful, honest music
One of my all time favorite bands, regardless of genres. And judging by the other comments, I’m not alone. If I could only own 10 albums, “Too Stuffed” would be one of them. As Russell said, “Musical Mavericks”.
Back in the 70's this band was in my vinyl library along with Marshall Tucker, Allman Bros. Outlaws, etc. I originally bought Too Stuffed to Jump because I thougt the name of the band sounded cool. I hadn't heard of them before that. Damned if I didn't wear out the grooves on that vinyl in a short time though!
Was the first I bought, took it home and my old man hated it for a while (maybe because I bought it!) but in the end he gave in to their wonderfullness.
God blessed the world when he put theses guys together and he placed the group of fellers and there families into my life to raise me I had the best daddy’s in the world my dad pulled the trigger in front of me I was 6 years old they turned me on to theses guys and love thank you father god
In college at Colorado State U (we graduated in 1979) we had about 500 albums stacked that we sorted through and listened to all the time. The Amazing Rhythm Aces TO TOO STUFFED TO JUMP was our go-to album, and I just sent this to my roommates. Thank you ARA for many, many years of enjoyment and appreciation of your wonderful music. You, my friends, are brilliant.
Thanks for sharing this footage of the Aces. I had the pleasure of seeing 2 of their concerts. I also met Russell and Stick after one of the shows. Whenever I hit the road on a trip I play their CDs all the way through. Really miss Russell and the music world really lost a treasure of Americana. Long live the Amazing Rhythm Aces music.
Thanks so much for this Jonathan Harrington ! It’s 1975, I’m living in Sheffield, England. My brother-in-law brings home “Stacked Deck” by a band called The Amazing Rhythm Aces” . We’d never heard anything like it, and I was hooked straight away. Side one, Track 1……”Third Rate Romance” - with lyrics that meant something, with humour. Russel Smith and the whole bunch of musical talent that made the band so good and so special. Still play them every week. Americana, before anyone invented the word (as RS said in the interview). Thanks for the music.
Stumbled across this waiting for the coffee to brew. This made my daily commute from the Mississippi coast to New Orleans so enjoyable. Thanks to whover posted it.
Thanks for this awesome video i was a front man and lead guitarist for 30 years and i always had a few of their songs on my set list. The lead guitarist in this video was awesome the best strat tone I've heard maybe ever. Love you guys and thanks for being part of my musical life. God Bless
I was same as you, mostly in blues bands, but eventually every type of music that you can play. I used an old strat with a bass man 410, Marshall head half power, one 15 sub, and large horn tweeter, with all types of pedals, fuzz, Octavia, wah, choruses, phasers, flanger, tape echo, tube screamer, compression equalizer, back then the multifx processors where not great like today, now i just use boss gt1000, and direct, and in ears😂😂 talk about making a guitar players life easier, but the blues purest snob in me still wants that dumble steel to lug around and play 12 gauges😂
dude thx fer droppin this on us. gettin live footage of Russel is not easy . knocks me out the heavies he plays with . Drummer is right there, and close my eyes and its byrd "Burton. that gitar palyer is really solid. thanks agains....
Love the Aces! Russells voice is so full of soul and sincerity. You can dance wildly to Dancing the Night Away or hot and close to Burning the Ballroom Down - or just sit back and smile to Third Rate Romance and all the rest. They are all constants on my playlists. Thank you from a Nova Scotian hillbilly to you Tennessee Hillbillies.
Became an ARA fan back in the 70s with the first album. Bought them all afterwards and again on CD. I think I have 12 or more plus 3 or 4 of Russells solo CDs. Since I grew up in Hawaii, they were not on the airwaves except via the college station. In 12 years on the Mainland, never ever crossed paths with them. I think for a large part of it, they were not together. Big loss on my part. Based on this, they rocked harder on stage than on most of their records, maybe depending on the lead guitarist of the moment. To me they were so eclectic and that was the way I listened to music, none of this segmented shit today where stations play one kind of thing. Some of my friends call me schizo in my taste but others get it. As a guitarist, I especially love blues and bluesy stuff and ARA did it up great but also thru in a country or bluegrass or R & B ish song. Real loss for the music world and the country with Russells passing. Thanks for whomever put this on YT. Made my day. Mahalo.
Ain't nothing wrong with you, some of this music is complicated AF. Just because ppl hear the southern accents, and well you know. I was fortunate to play and tour with many popular acts in the 90s-2000s as well with my other bands. I ended up in the music capitals, Memphis, Nashville, and Athens, you wouldn't believe how many great players there are just flipping burgers or whatever, so you have to have your shit together
Billy Earnhardt is with Mike Ellis and the Hometown Band now. They’re an old band from Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. They’ve been together since the early 70s, maybe 60s. ✌🏻
I saw them there, as well. We were living in Carmel Valley but had gone to Oregon to visit our daughter. As luck would have it, we followed the Aces from Grants' Pass to Jacksonville and then to Santa Cruz. Russell recognized us in Santa Cruz and bought us a drink.
I still freak out when I hear an "Aces" tune. Ya never hear them in Bar's in New England on a Juke Box or anyy one singing one of their song's. HAVE TO GO TO TEXAS TO SEE APPRECIATION. Today's Radio Stations don't play shit
First saw them opening for Leon Russell in Auckland NZ in '77. They were sensational, and a love affair started and never ended. Too Stuffed to Jump an absolute classic and near perfect album. Nice that they reformed in the 90's partially because of ongoing fandom from NZ and Australia (or so the story goes, and I ain't going to discredit it)
i was at this concert russell called it the nat festival they were bad a night i want forget 2 guys came up to me and said if ur drunk call the police theres a wreck on the curve and u can make it to the interestate i headed back to knoxville after it was over what a great night

I used to see them in Memphis bars in the 70s. They were my favorite Memphis band. 🤠👍🏻
I'm 77 still got there " records"!!. Thanks for this

I went to Dothan Alabama back in the mid 70’s to see the Aces, what a great show! They were opening up for some guy named Jimmy Buffet!
Absolutely fabulous!!!
Awesome band, proud of the fact that i have played drums on a few shows with this keyboard player Billy Earheart. A very good keyboard player and a good friend of mine.
❤❤❤my kind of music

May I ask what took you so long? What music did you grow up on? In my opinion, theres no better Southern Blues/Rock band.
Go listen to Run c&w then you might recognize lots of things
This band has to be one of the best examples of seeing a live performance and evangelizing about them forever. SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC.

Omg! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Watching this has been such a treat. Russell was a once in a lifetime gift to the world. Sure miss him

I❤this music! My boyfriend and I saw the album 'Too Stuff To Jump' at the store. We bought it in 1976. Turned on all my friends and family to it.
Was the first I bought, took it home and my old man hated it for a while (maybe because I bought it!) but in the end he gave in to their wonderfullness.
My favorite ARA album.
What a treat to find this video. And what a great talent Russell Smith was.
God blessed the world when he put theses guys together and he placed the group of fellers and there families into my life to raise me I had the best daddy’s in the world my dad pulled the trigger in front of me I was 6 years old they turned me on to theses guys and love thank you father god
Love the timing of this show! Got to hear some great tunes from the Out of the Blue cd...
❤ Love these guys with an emphasis on Russell’s singing voice. 🥰🎶
Thanks for putting this video out . THIS is real music?💯💯💯💯
Been a fan since the early seventies & still listen most days to one of their tracks
Glad I ran across this it's great music love his voice
Oh I forgot about them! How could I have done that. Music from better times and even better days. Just loved them.
gotta love Russell Smith ... so cool... so funny... so original...
