  • Here's where you can try Four Sided Calcunundrum by Paws: app.crackingthecryptic.com/43...
    Normal sudoku rules apply. If a square containing 'N+' appears in the grid, then consider the two pairs of diagonally opposite digits in the 2x2 surrounding the square. Each of those two pairs of digits has a sum of N. If a square just containing "+" appears in the grid, then the two pairs of diagonally opposing digits in the 2x2 surrounding the square must still sum to the same N. These rules also apply to the other operations (-, x and /).

    I'm so blown away, Mark, by the kindness and generosity of your birthday greetings and comments about me. I cannot say enough good things about you and Simon and CtC. A bright spot of peacefulness and fun and charm from the two of you and of course wonderful puzzles like this one by Paws. I look forward to the July reward very much! Now: If any of you are reading this and have not yet subscribed, please do so as a birthday present to me! 🎂 Thanks, Mark, very much (and for the greetings to my aunt, as well!)

    I finished in 258 minutes. I thought since the video time was short, that I would have a nice easy puzzle. It was not. I was stuck in a loop of constantly trying to calculate the parity of box 5. It took me a long time to make a breakthrough, but slowly I was able to get it. This was rough for me, cause I could see that I was close, but it kept slipping away. It is cool that a ruleset like this can exist. Great Puzzle!

    If the digits must all be different, there's only four ways to fill an "x" box in this puzzle. Two of them appear in the final grid; the others are 1x6 and 2x3, and 4x6 and 3x8.

    • @stephanswoboda2432
      @stephanswoboda2432 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      No, there is one more option: 2x6 and 3x4. And at 25:42 I think Mark was lucky not to see this option and also 1x6 and 2x3 are possible. I can’t see how to easily exclude these options in box 3.

    • @RichSmith77
      @RichSmith77 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@stephanswoboda2432The only four digits that work AND include a 9 are 2x9 and 3x6.
      He knows both 9 and 3 are on the 2x2. Mark deduces the make-up by considering how many factors of 3 ("3 factors") have to be involved, so that they can be balanced on the two diagonals. 3 and 9 already have three "3 factors" between them. So that he can have two "3 factors" on both diagonals, he knows 6 has to appear too, since it's the only other sudoku digit that can provide a 4th "3 factor". The 9 (with two "3 factors") has to go on an opposite diagonal to 3 and 6 (one "3 factor" each).

    • @RichSmith77
      @RichSmith77 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Leslie_AFSuppose the four digits in a 2x2 around a maths operator are,
      A B
      C D
      The maths operator applied between the pairs of digits on the two diagonals has to give the same result for both diagonals.
      So for "/" it means A/D = either B/C or C/B (you don't know which is divided by which, just that the ratio will be the same in one direction or the other). If it's given as "N/” (e.g. "2/") then N has to be the common ratio for both diagonals. Either A/D or D/A = N, and also B/C or C/B = N.
      "-" works in a similar way. A-D = either B-C or C-B.
      If it's "N-" then either A-D or D-A = N, and also B-C or C-B = N.
