Place the digits 1 to 6 once each in every row, column, and box. No two cells separated by a chess knight's move may share the same digit. An orange circle indicates an odd digit. A blue square indicates an even digit. Digits increase along a thermometer, starting from the bulb end. Digits along an arrow sum to the digit in that arrow's circle.

Thanks for featuring my puzzle on the channel! This was actually the very first puzzle that I ever set, so it was certainly _my_ first rodeo. I didn't even know about the checkerboard pattern until after I'd released the puzzle and noticed that R1C2 and R2C5 always have the same value in every 6x6 antiknight puzzle. Glad you enjoyed :)

A great job on your first puzzle! I had fun, even though I already knew the trick. For those who know, it is a snackdoku, and for those who don't, it is a journey of discovery.

By the way, I did not realize there was a checkerboard pattern. I found a more complex pattern using *6 colours:*
RB Y RB OP G OP
OP G OP RB Y RB
BG P BG OY R OY
OY R OY BG P BG
GR O GR PY B PY
PY B PY GR O GR
The position of yellow (Y) in *rows 1* and *2* gave me the first digit:
      *Y = 3*
The position of orange (O) in *rows 1* and *6* gave me its value:
      *O = 5*
Notice that the colours in *columns 2* and *5* were fully determined.

Thank you for the puzzle, could I please suggest not colouring clues if you can help it? I personally prefer blue for odd and orange for even, which is the opposite of how you, Simon, and Mark do it.

I was never going to get that on my own. I'd never seen the opening trick, and it wasn't at all intuitive to me even after reading about it in the comments. 15 minutes of nothing, then a hint, then 10 more minutes of stumbling about the board. I just had to keep brute-forcing the coloring until it finally did stuff. Even now I don't really get how the board collapses into that pattern, only that it does. I don't like not understanding things...

Interesting that you started with the 🟦. I started with the 🟠 and knights-moved it around the grid to find that it had to go on the tip of the thermo, which by maths meant it had to be 3. That fixed the thermo and the arrow, and the rest was easy to write in, for a finish time of under 4 minutes.

  • @brookead
    @brookead 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

You can do it without figuring out the checkerboard by continuing the thought about whether R1C2 can be a 1. If you follow that round then the two thermos will end up forcing a pair of clashing 1's.

25:00 for me. I did not immediately see the big constraint that knight's move put on the 6x6 grid and struggled a long time with trying to color individual boxes and where they could go throughout. Eventually just happened to be looking at the correct cell and noticed that, of the two possibilities it had in a neighboring box, one of them broke the puzzle. I think basically the same idea as the constraint illustrated in the video, but Mark's version was resoundingly more elegant. Good puzzle overall.

This was pretty much my experience too. 26:16 after trying to determine where the tip of the arrow could live, and my logic spread from there. I didn't notice the checkerboarding until Mark pointed it out. Very cool!

Spent ten minutes colouring the grid and marking out possible number combinations. Eventually determined that the arrow circle could only be a 5, 7, or 9...and then realised that it was a 6x6 sudoku and that I had been considering the digits 1 to 9 the whole time.
Solved the rest in about a minute but I still feel kind of silly.

    Great puzzle.
I started in the rightmost three columns. I gave each cell in box 2 a colour then coloured the columns below using the antiknight rule. After staring for some time I noticed that colour trios occupied only three cells in each box. I changed each colour trio to a single colour to better see the pattern. The leftmost three columns I coloured likewise but chose different colours then matched the sets in each half. This took me about half an hour all up. Once coloured this way, the solution flowed smoothly and quickly. Of course, Mark got there very much more rapidly than me, as expected.

I have the feeling that the “rodeo” title relates to the alternate solve which follows by first proving that 1 can’t occupy R1C2 and then propagating the 3-2-5 digits you get as a result through the knight’s move constraint.
You end up with a fun exercise of progressively swinging around the board as the “horse” rules out all squares in a grid except the next target.

9:40 for me, didn't use the checkerboard, but I got that either arrow, or top thermometer must have 1, so 1 got only 2 positions in the box 2 and then looking at 1s in other boxes all you need is to check for knights move constraints to finish the puzzle.

The more i did this the farther along on the puzzles i got before i needed help solving it. More puzzles i did the more i could figure out the logic on my own without any help.

l had a completely different approach to mark, which is funny to see. I started by giving every cell in column 5 its own color and going from there. Thanks to the knight-restriction you can color practically the entire right side of the sudoku, and then with some logic using the thermo and the arrow you can figure out the rest :]

Done this for 4:42, it's quite easy but the break-in is nice.
PS Watched the video and it turns out Mark's approach is nothing like mine, first I eliminated 3 in the arrow's circle (makes the arrow 12 and there's only one place in row 2 for them since the thermo bulb is at least 3). Then I eliminated 1 from the arrow with the knighs move cause it forces two ones in the row 6). After that you just use knight's move and thermos to fill the grid.

At 12:32 you said you’d be interested to know if you did not have the perception can you solve and is it relatively straightforward. I did not understand the checkerboard pattern throughout the grid and I muscled through it, but went back and wrote the logic steps:
R1c4 is 5, If it were 3, the other 2 digits on the thermo in row 1 would 1 and 2 and the bulb in box 1 would be higher than 1 and 2 and the 1 and 2 cannot be on that thermo and they cannot share r2c6.
R2c3 cannot be 5 or the thermo would go to at least 7. “R2c2 is not 5” says Knighty McKnightFace. R2c1 is 5.
“The digit in r2c3 is not in r1c5” says Knighty McKnightFace. R1c6 is the same as r2c3. It cannot be 4 because if it were, the rest of the thermo would be 5,6 and both numbers from box 1 on the arrow summing to 5 would share r2c6.
R1c2 is 3. If it were 1, the 1 has to be off the thermometer in r2 c6. Place 1s around the grid listening to Knighty McKnightface, and there is no place for 1 in box 5.
    R1c3 is 2 by maths. R2c3 is 1, and so is r1c6.
    “R2c2 is not a 3” says Knighty. It is not a 4, or 2 and 3 would share r2c6.
    The 3 in column 2 and knight rule puts candidates for 3 in r4c1, r4c3, r6c1, and r6c3. R6c4 is not 3.
The 1s in boxes 1 and 2 place candidates in checkerboard pattern around the grid and r6c4 is not 1. It sees a 2 in its column. It is 4 by thermo rule and 5 and 6 fill the thermo. After that with constant nagging by Knighty, the grid fills quickly.

17:13@#4260. But it wasn't a completely "clean" solve. I made a wrong guess on the arrow and got a ways in, then it broke. So I just backtracked and went with the other combo. Essentially an accidental bifurcation. I did see the checkerboard manifest as I went along, but I had no idea whether it was something intrinsic, or just how the current puzzle was designed.
