On a side note, I loved seeing Tony making a surprise cameo in this! I know a lot younger kpop fans may not know him. But as a Chinese American who grew up watching HK entertainment, my jaw dropped when I saw him appear! Like what a big deal he is, and icon and legend himself of the Asian cinema world, in a kpop mv!
Never in my 28 years of life would I have ever imagined THE TONY LEUNG to appear in a KPOP music video. I was soooo indenial that I had to pause the MV and stare at him for a minute thinking "There is noooo fvcking way that is who I think it is"
Tony is a legendary actor who is still loved and respected by generations in their 30s and 50s in Korea. In the 1990s, Hong Kong movies were very popular in Korea, and Tony was at the center of them. He decided to appear on this MV for free to repay Korean fans who still like him.
i was quite surprised as well. long story short
1, everyone ages regardless. some age like wine, most age just like old people. Tong ages well.
2, Tony is well-known for his charming killing eyes that can act. the MV does showcase his eyes.
3, heard Tony did his role in the MV for free. yet to be confirmed. he is one of the highest paid actors in Asia. for those who don't know Tony Leung, he is a very famous actor from Hong Kong and pretty well known in Asia. he also played a role (Xu Wenwu) in a 2021 Marvel's movie - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
When i saw him my brain didn't register that it was him i was still thinking Squid Game so i thought it was the protagonist in SG but when it hit me I was soooo happy it made me want to rewatch WKW movies (and it's funny to see ppl recognize him from Shang-smth movie lol)
the way i got goosebumps when he appeared!! like WHAAAAT, I'm watching a NJ mv with Hoyeon AND Tony in it?!? I've been seeing him since I was very young on movies that get english or dubbed in our language, but I only truly knew him through Shang-Chi!! (one of my top absolute fave marvel movie too)
Seeing as you guys seemed kinda confused on what the MV’s were about, it’s basically their take on the story between Eros and Psyche from Greek Mythology except the roles are reversed gender wise, Hoyeon(Eros/Cupid) is longing for the love humans are capable of and sees Micol(Pysche) and falls in love with him but he can’t see her, that’s why she’s staring at him awkwardly in the first part. Her standing in the rain is symbolizing her “cleansing” herself of her godlike status and becoming human so she can experience love. Tony(Aphrodite) sees Hoyeon loving a mortal man and totally erases her from his mind and brings her back to her godly status as it’s against the rules for an immortal to love a mortal human.
NJ themselves are basically the guardian angels who don’t interfere with mortals and immortal relationships
According to Hanni, Get Up is a teaser for what kind of music to expect from them for the next comeback, full RnB album.
I am still fascinated that Tony made such an impressive take there, even if it was just for a few seconds. But his facial expressions where everything, and they gave me goosebumps, I don't know why 😅

@@HyperAB I'm sure I've seen him somewhere but I'm really not sure. Can you name some title where he acted in? I need to watch. If he is so good in just a few seconds, he must be phenomenal in a full acting role 👀

To simplify the meaning of the MV for others who are confused, Hoyeon(the girl from Squid Game) is cupid but she fell in love with a human, which is forbidden. So when Tony Leung(Venus) found out, he made the guy fall in love with another girl and made him forget abt Hoyeon.
p.s They used the eye gaze towards their target as a replacement for the "arrow" to make a human fall in love with another human.
i fully understand the MV side A and B every single scene , but when you start understand it you will start tearing up 😢
The painting is a giveaway to the MV concept if you know of it - L'Amour et Psyché (Cupid and Psyche, 1817) by
Françios Édouard Picot. Its also known as "Psyche Abandoned". I think its in the Louvre for anyone wishing to see it.

Additionally Shin Woo-seok creating his style and trademarks - distinct sound production/rain/shadow/camera movement... alongside Bang Jae-yeob, they both have unique styles!!
A lot of people reacting to these MVs haven’t seen City of Angels and it shows. (A big influence on the tone, wardrobe, and depictions of angels).
If you look up the painting in the art exhibit it gives you the whole story because it’s a modern telling of the story of Cupid (Eros, Psyche, and Aphrodite).
It’s great stuff. Music is fantastic.

@@catsballs9657 yeah. There are a ton connections. Black outfits, water and rain used for important scenes, the loss of love, and even the story of the 90s movie being inspired by the same myth. Its a little wild the similarities. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really really really really simplified summary: She's a Cupid, she falls in love with a man, she becomes human, they spend time together, at the end the other angel says nope, and yeets her mans to fall in love with another girl, cause Cupid aint doin her job, and she's sad. New Jeans are like Cupids guardian angels. That's the really simplified version. It's based on Greek mythology.
I was disappointed by you guys not understanding the story. It was a great story and done amazingly well. I hope you guys watched a breakdown or something cus it’s a really good story.

@@tokyodrvft ??? there were plenty of hints. There are three instances when she makes people fall in love beforehand + she can't be seen by him obviously. And then there are multiple instances of her refusing to make others fall in love, like when the guy went on a date with another girl. I got it on my first watch.
@@spr5033 good for you ig?? i also got it at the first watch, but all my saying is that if you don’t have any knowledge about mythology (esp greek) then maybe you won’t immediately catch it. and not everyone can pay attention to everything at one time (here they were watching but also probably reading the lyrics and discovering the song for the first time) so yea, it didn’t surprise me that they didn’t got it on the first watch.
@@spr5033a lot of people dont know about mythology and still it's kinda hard to understand when you first watch it.
I actually found this way easier to understand through my first watch than Ditto. I wasn't super familiar with the myth of Eros and Psyche beforehand. It was one of those things where I knew there was a story but never knew what it was about. Kind of like knowing Dante's Inferno and the Divine Comedy by name but not the specifics of what happens. I understand right after the two elevator scenes and the painting in the gallery. She makes the first man and woman make out then sees what they focus a lot on this cupid in the painting (don't know the painting either). She follows dude into the elevator but this time, when another female enters, she doesn't make her and the guy she's infatuated with fall in love like the first elevator couple. Just those elevator scenes helped a lot.
This is Sade, from the super sultry groove (minus Matthewman's sax) to the cinematic mv. I can imagine Sadu Abu's voice over this song, can see a young Sade playing Hoyeon's role. Even the girls' vocals are different here, their phrasing is very similar to Sade Abu's distinct sound. Somebody on the Newjean's team must be a big Sade fan (as we all should be).
This story line made me bawl my eyes out I swear 😢❤

Basically the girl was a cupid that's why people couldn't see her even him. Her job was to make people to fall in love but she wanted to be a human bc she fell in love with the guy. That's why the man with grey hair punished her since she didn't do her job properly by making him falling in love with another girl. That's so sad.

Get Up not being a full track is a crime against humanity.
If you look at the painting in the gallery it is Eros & Psyche. Jung Hoyeon is Eros, who connects peoples hearts. Because she is a God, people can't see her . New Jeans can see her because (and you guys are correct I think) they are her Guardian Angels. I think it goes without saying that she feels the stirrings of love from observing the brother in the art gallery. Tony Leung may have been the God of mischief. It looks like Leung made the brother forget about Eros and as he was walking across the street (hence the sly smile on Leung's face). This is loosely associated with the Greek mythology Eros comes from. Hope this helps. Oh, the shedding of the clothing symbolizes her giving up Godhood for love (remember, she uses the umbrella in the rain earlier in the video). 😀
I hate how everyone was trying to make this something it wasn’t. “They’re minors watching naked women ahh” like it is not that deep the story is good
They're trolls. Always sensationalize. Always baiting for attention. If that's the only take from the mv, they're dumb as bag of nails. I wouldn't take them seriously.
Lol, Autoplay is not a premium thing. It is a function you can turn off on the video settings right next to the captions. Unless you are in a Playlist, which will always autoplay 😅

The story is about greek mythology. Hyo is Cupid, New Jeans are the fates, the dude is Eros and Tony is Aphrodite.
The concept of this 2-part music video reminded me so much of the 90s Nicolas Cage movie City of Angels which is about some kind of a dark cupid angel who abandoned their entity and codes, in order to live and beloved just like human. But of course, there will be consequences.

Had no idea what this was until i read Wikipedia 😅 Had a feeling it had to do with some sort of philosophy cuz I was thinking of a connection between this and Fifty Fifty "Cupid"
I feel like the MV overshadowed the song for me. Like Get Up was immediately stuck in my head, whereas I was trying so hard to remember what Cool W You sounded like. Now that every song is out, I feel so conflicted about this comeback. NewJeans is all I’ve been religiously listening to in kpop, so I miss them so much and am so happy for their comeback. But damn we only got like 3 full songs (I can’t count ASAP as a full song tbh), and they’re all under 3 min! I know quality over quantity, but after the end of each song, it doesn’t feel like it’s enough? Even hype boy was less than 3 min, and felt “whole” and enough for me. Idk I’m happy and sad at the same time lol

Nah, it's the opposite for me. When I first saw the MV, Cool With You was immediately stuck in my head and it wasn't the same for Get Up until I watched another channel react to Side B. And we actually got 5 full songs Cool With You is a full song and whether you count it or not so is ASAP. And Hype Boy is actually exactly 3 minutes long. And to me, every full song we've gotten from Newjeans feels complete even if these new ones are shorter. At the end of these new songs I feel like it's enough, I don't think they need to be any longer. It's like you said, quality over quantity.

The intro sounds like an old 90s R&B, when they sings the English part. Get up sounds like H.E.R's old Focus track. Still solid though. I like both the song on here.
