As a recent poly graduate, I actually miss the mid and final-year exams in secondary school. I think it goes without saying that learning is a process and students shouldn't focus so much on just the 2 exams. But the issue is the importance of grades. The effect can already be seen in the poly and uni system that once you mess up once, your GPA takes a hit, and it's almost impossible to pull it back up by a lot. Ends up, the importance of grades is not on the 2 exams/year, but the prolonged stress over the to maintain and not make mistakes which forces a lot of students to burn out. In secondary school, I was still experimenting with how do I learn information as a person. In the 4 years, I'm given all the time to experiment and explore, which refines and builds up to O level. I think the scaling of the GPA system is something to relook at if we are truly looking to emphasize learning and experimentation. But as of now, multiple tests that all link to grade, that determine what course you can get into, what school you can get into, seems more likely to increase and prolonged the stress in students of today.
If viewed in the right way, exams could be a way to teach kids/children how to manage and handle pressure and stress.
Yet,if they are overpowered and stressed out,they will view stress as something to be avoided,or something that they cannot overcome
For me, exams were only ever incredibly overwhelming or just easy and underwhelming. Never in the middle.

sorry, but this comment probably not related to the video but this series is damn awesome. listen to it through spotify every single day this week, to slowly catching up the ones that missed. I LOVED IT! learnt so much things and really really entertaining and educational! but “here for the algo”, you guys damn rock!
PSLE score system became more like O'level's L1R5. I think the reasoning was to reduce comparing of results down to a single point, but not sure if it makes sense.
I think the problem is with competition and tuition.
I think the points discussed here are valid but some important points are missing. The subjects taught in schools are not for molding students into robots but rather to provide different exposure to subjects and ways of thinking. If the student does not take certain subjects (eg. language/maths/science) because he/she is bad at it, that also exposes the student to potential problems as they navigate their adult life. Removal of exams does not remove the source of stress because most of it comes from parent's expectations and not the school actually demanding that all the students score well.
Exams , doing and returning papers, do take up at least some curriculum time, and I’m not teacher, but maybe setting papers also need a lot of effort. Hopefully no MYE has other benefits.
Finally someone speaking sense!! Exams are not the source of all evils. Schools are not there to make students stressed and fail them. In fact the opposite is true. The actual source of stress is from the very complaining parents!

Removing exams might seem like an easy solution. It’s more important to help students to navigate thru exams and learn to cope with the stress and anxiety that come with it. Through exams, they also learn values and life skills.
To be honest I feel like for most career paths (except for the highly professional ones like doctor and engineering), your education is not teaching you much for the job, its just teaching you how to learn.
personally I prefer a big exam over weighted assessment because I'm the true procrastinator lol. Let me slack off the whole semester and cram in everything within a week for the exam / project. I like learning, but I don't like proving that I have learnt... haha

Idk if it’s a general Singapore child experience, but my mom drew up a timetable for me every holiday as well LOL.
My secondary school removed MYEs (used to be 30%) and made EOYs (now 60%) because they knew that students were better prepared at the end of the year
A bit late to this episode! ... but for future watchers... from 15:27, the impression that 21st Century skillsets is "syllabus" is misconstrued. It is well understood from pedadgogy research (and MOE knows this) that these skill sets cannot be taught in isolation i.e. "a lesson on critical thinking" etc will not work. They are teaching the teachers how to weave this into the mainstream curriculum...i.e. learn through activities embedded in other subjects. Why it "replaces" mid-yr exams is because these types of "Vygotskian collaborative inquiry-based active learning" activities are time consuming. Keep up the good work TDK!

They have been doing more hbl days and doing this Student Initiated Learning activity thing where we have to plan out an activity to encourage students to do smth other than studying
Literally in the briefing slides when they tell us, in bold red words "KEEP IT SAFE, SIMPLE AND STRESS-FREE"
everyone saw that and immediately went like "wahh feels so fake" some more during hbl days, work to do is hard to finish on time so supposedly finishing early to do sil, now sil stressful cos busy doing lesson work
i'm one of the people who took the PSLE last year!!! My score was pretty good and I went to an IP school but i still think that the Aggregate score system is better. There might have been a chance that I could have gotten into RGS but i could have been 1 mark away :( One of my friends is a Math DSA student and no offence but she's basically only good at math because she absolutely loves math. The subject based banding thing works because she's in an extra class after school for students really good at a specific subject :D
So, haven't got a reply on where to get Shermaine's cup....

On the topic of harrasment... I'm a 5'1 petite female. One time, a guy with beer belly was standing behind me in an LRT. He was very much taller than me. Suddenly I felt something brushed my ass. So, I looked back and glared at the dude in the eyes. I couldn't comprehend what part of his body bumped my ass. His beer belly would be too high vs my ass level eventho it was the most protruding thing in sight. I couldn't change my location either because the LRT was packed. It happened another 3 times. Everytime I glared at him he would just avoid eye contact and I didn't dare cause a scene. Then it kept on happening until I reached my stop. Felt super harassed 😔
Sorry to hear that happened to u.. But seriously u should speaked up or do something about it so the pervert wouldn't do it again..

About the statistics about harrassment, it's possible the 2% or 5% that disagreed that it is harrassment see it as assault instead
I think the new system is close to how the working world is being graded. The important factor is that the new system should ensure that that the students understand the subject rather than blend, drink and vomit.
and also working life is about consistancy, no point being good only 10% of the time, it needs to be 100% of the time
LOL, one of my pri school classmates (mixed race also) wore hot pink bra beneath the white blouse and nobody made a big deal of it. In fact, I think schools should encourage girls to wear sports bras to protect their boobs during physical activities.

I’ve been listening to the daily ketchup episodes informally for a while now. And I can’t help but wonder how Denise turned out alright after growing up with such an overbearing mother. All the little quips from her about her mother does paint a picture of an unhappy and stifling childhood with a narcissistic and controlling parent.

During my time sec 1 and 2 we are afternoon session and cos the boys very noisy and we got detention till 6,45pm then we allow to go home, and sec 3-4 morning my friends will take my homework and quickly copy before the class gather in the morning, Denise childhood seem to spend more time study instead of enjoy her childhood, some boy classmate will even look at the pattern of the bra at the back and make fun of their classmate
I remember when my classmate made fun of my friend when we were in lower secondary because she was wearing bright neon green sports bra, said she was slutty and made her cry. I shouted at him what’s wrong with him and that it was just bra colour >:( so it does happen
Just wanna make a comment on the bra in school issue because I think this is a concerning topic not just in singapore but also in malaysia and japan where they put the responsibility onto the female students. I understand the ministers and the teachers concern on the girls's safety and protection from sexual harassment but at this point, it is extremely redundant and very backward thinking of such policy to fix this 'issue'. In a way it is using that excuse to control the girls to behave a certain way and let them think they got harassed or rape because of what they were wearing.
If they really wanna fix the issue, just change the colour and material of the uniform instead of being white and translucent. Either the revamp the uniform to something more suiting that doesn't need the girls to be mindful on their underwear colours or just abolish the uniform and set procedure of normal clothing.

Not sightly? I walk around Singapore CBD or where ever and see "females" who's bra straps frequently show etc. Now, to me, I couldn't care less what colour bra a woman, or in this case, the girl. The point I am trying to make is that this has all to do with the boys and they should be taught not to sexualise girls in that way. On this issue, I feel Singaporeans have not changed a whole lot in the last 5 decades, albeit becoming a bit more liberal. However, these rules merely hide a problem behind a facade of blame and redicule mostly pointed at girls the very people who are supposed to teach them not only their school subjects but how to carry themselves in life, and by that I mean the teachers and parents whom indirectly agree to make up rules like this. I mean, why can boys show their individuality and not girls? Have we not as a nation gotten to the point where the words equality and meritocracy are the way of life instead of having societal gender rules? Or are Singaporeans just superficial people? Yes? No? What is what? Only time and public action and reactions will tell.
@@austen98 im sure this is not a gender thing, but more of professionalism. School is a place to learn and it is obvious that formal attire is important. Unfortunately, it means covering up underwear. This also applies to guys as well, if they have to wear white pants to school, it means that they cannot wear vibrant coloured underwear. That's why the tuxedo, which are often worn at work, is black in colour. This is to hide the colours of the undergarment as much as possible. Also, women are encouraged to show as much individuality as possible, at least in modern Singapore.

I think it's time Schools allow gender neutral uniforms.
1. Girls can feel safer wearing pants while guys may feel more cooling wearing a skirt as compared to trousers (my male friends always complain its hot)
2. Transgender students can feel at ease
or just wear anything you want / no uniform

Schools in general doesn't make sense. Its designed during 1950s to produce automated humans for factories. Most of the schools are so outdated its scary.
But aren't that due to parent mindset being outdated and not ready to accept a more dynamic education? If you thinking about it, most parents want the school to "produce automated humans for factories". It's just the it's the 2020s version of factories instead of 1950s. TH-camrs, streamers or even entrepreneur, honestly how many parents can openly encourage it. JC/Poly/Uni, that's not the only way of learning and progression and these "safety net" itself arent it also an outdated way of thinking?
Schools are not the villains here. They are tasked to enable humans to be as productive to the society as possible. Not automated humans (whatever that is). They give you the basic skills to survive in the modern society (not a jungle life tho). Imagine a world without schools and everyone home schools now that’s a nightmare isn’t it?
