    As for suggestions, I wouldnt have mind if you made this episode longer. Show some more flying and let us hear Josh talk about it when he flies. Would also have liked to see what stuff that was put into it, and how. As for a new challenge, I would love to see you try to make a finless, foamboard flying wing.

    I always like to see cartoon planes come to life as in Porco Rossa and Tail Spin. Dark wing was a personal fave. Please get back to that kind of content. If you have the skills to create them, they make excellent memories and make my kids laugh.

    This thing looks super interesting. You know I under utilize 3D printers at school, and haven’t yet flown a wing. This could be a cool first look!
    Also Matt you did well on the review! If you wouldn’t mind me saying tho, more additional details would be nice on the flight characteristics of the model. Technical data understand is redundant since one could just look that up, and idk, maybe its just me, but I’d love highs or lows on turn nature, climb, speed! Just a few extra picks and licks to get a solid objective understanding on what this bird can do or offer.

      3d printed planes are still heavier then traditional balsa build up models; its just that complex shapes are easier and making identical ones is trivial.
      And pla is also more brittle in cold weather and can not tolerate to much heat either; none of that affects balsa.

      But balsa self destructs on landing and is very time consuming to build. Planes can be too light, I often add ballasts to my 3D printed sailplanes and they perform very similarly to my (expensive AF) composite sailplanes. (They have slightly less glide (but still plenty) and thermal a little slower, both of theses are because of surface finish, not weight.)
      They are 1/12 the price and 95% of the performance, it's a no brainier. I use carbon string infused ABS, the parts are often too rigid even with no internal bracing and my profiles are only 2 walls thick usually. They are lighter than many balsa models, but if your perfect with balsa you could shave 2% max.
      And the plane is built while I sleep 👌, more time flying, less time building, and isn't that kinda the point of the hobby, to fly.

      @@index7787 good that my balsa planes are to old to remeber how to "Self destruct" on "landing" ;)
      The chinese (B)arf models are not a good example of balsa construction.
      And yes its easier to ballast a model like slope soaring pilots do depending on conditions but really difficult to reduce weight for calm conditions.
      Time consuming depends, i have 24 hours in a day and choose to use some of that time on my hobby.

      @@cmulder002 I have printed 4 of these exact planes.
      The last two have been perfect and I can honestly say were lighter and stronger than I could have done out of Balsa.
      I think the limit in printing these and the reason why it's 1.6 meters instead of 2 which would be more ideal is the size of most people's printers I think the next one I do is going to be 2 meter and will have a much better wing loading.

    This is a FANTASTIC model. Mine was made from PLA and I took it to FliteFest 2019 It was out in the sun all day and did fine. But... when I left it in the tent one of the ailerons warped. Also, I hand launch mine and it is pretty easy. It would be even easier with a buddy to help. With the new LW-PLA this would be even lighter and fly better.

    For anybody wondering more about 3d printing the melting plastic type is called fdm there’s also resin printers such as sla and dlp they both use UV CURE resin and a light to cure it

    I just wish I had a 3D Printer, or any knowledge of how to use one... or a friend with one. 😞

      I got in the hobby for less than 200$.
      Bought a Creality Ender3 on Aliexpress when it was discounted for 158$. A few spools of filament (1kg for 10$) and you are good to go.

      @@pheenix42 They ought to, with all the research that Bowers did lately, their dream is slowly coming true. I am actually designing my own rc glider inpired heavily from their work, as their designs were my idols of perfect planes as a kid, but Im doing it with better airfoil and the twist that the guys at Nasa calculated few years ago. Hortens were my kind of dreamers.

    There was an episode on Mythbusters, where they took a Ford Taurus and put dimples (golf ball style) in the exterior panels and got improved gas mileage. If you can 3D print a planes panels, could you add golf ball style indents to the wing surfaces to improve air drag and possibly stability?

      apparently the shape of fish scrubs reduces drag; there have been experiments where a foil was made and it did reduce drag..
      Will it work on model planes is more difficult to say because models fly a lot slower then full size and at much lower wing loading (landing speed and wing loading are related) and the "thickness" of the air is still the same for both big plane and small.
      Making a 3d printed model plane with a surface that has either dimples or fish scrubs shapes is relative simple; its most the cad design to include it. Printing the result will be more time consuming and likely better done with a smaller extruder nozzle then the common .4mm diameter one but no different then any other print otherwise.
      If you have the skills and time to do the design (or can bribe another one;) then go for it and see what happens just make sure you have a identical models with a smooth surface too so you have a reference to check performance changes against.

    They have a free design on thingiverse you can try.
    Thanks for the vid, but I agree maybe just a tad more info, got me pretty close to sealing the deal, but not quite there yet.
    Have to say, I wish Eclipson would come up with a different hinge system, maybe CA hinges like 3dPrint lab.
    So thanks for the interesting topic, just a little more info/length and it would have been spot on. (Off to buy some STLs, yea, the 5% sold it for me.) 😜

      step one load gcode , step two load filament. step 3 press print... quite boring actually unless your the kind of person who enjoys watching paint dry

      @@cmulder002 if your printer works well, yeah. I imagine this takes quite a few build plates to print on a prusa or ender 3 sized machine. I wonder if they offer different files for people to use with bigger printers. I've got a couple Delta printers that can do 370x450mm very fast with 0.8mm nozzles for strength.

      @@elementdw the time laps show 4 wing sections and a center section in a single print session. Each wing half is 6 sections so that would make for 3 prints. assuming its a 24 hour "ish" print time each that would make for a 3/ 4 day print.
      That is faster then it takes to get a order shipped to you and if you use the provided g-codes the preparation time for each print session would be a few min if that. the second one would be even faster if you keep the g-codes saved on your printer.

      @@cmulder002 3 days is cool, but with 0.4 nozzle and same print settings as my other machines, my delta does a print in 9 hours that takes 27 on an ender 5 plus. With 0.8 nozzle I can probably print these in a day with added strength, but might weigh slightly more

      Anyone can print them but to print them well, as light and strong as possible on any printer takes some work.

      Airflow will keep the plastic cool enough not to get soft. Unless you have your motor/prop combination all wrong and cook the motor and esc.

      Material is PETG, more heat resistant than PLA so no worries with the sun

      @@MrJLouw Or you're like me and throw engines on everything. If I build one of these it's gonna be OS powered. Probably a 15LA, they're cheap and reliable. Might also modify the center section in CAD to make mounting the engine closer to CG easier(I had to add something like 300 grams to the nose of my STRIX Alatus to get it to balance on an Enya 09 ._. ))

      this thing should be no more than 400/500 grams, consider that a 1Kg spool PLA, ABS or PETG costs about 20 to 30 US$/€ depending on the quality... Although i've no idea if they used an exotic material but, considering they are selling the models themself, I think it is one of the mentioned above. In a nutshell if you already have a decent 3d printer it is actually a very cheap frame that can be repaired section by section indefinetely

    Just an FYI - You don't need a bungee to launch this aircraft. It is VERY easy to launch it by hand. Just hold it by the keel, throw it with a +20% pitch angle and apply full throttle. Here's how I do it: th-cam.com/video/CnVPvvSZEak/w-d-xo.html

      Octoprint can do it, you have to set it to take a photo at the end of each layer. but yeah, it's crazy cool

    Will you please try the GASB series of printied aircraft. The GASB-One is a flying wing the is 9pc. And does not require glue. Check it out and please review. It is my go to printed wing. Find them on thingiverse by Carletto73

      that's the point! it doesn't matter because you will print the broken section over and over and over

      @@MasterControl90original it does matter...if the print cant take a moderately rough landing you will spend more time rebuilding than flying. The ability to print parts is a huge plus, but everyone would rather be flying

      @@woogieman02 well surely it is faster to repair and glue together a foam plane, 3d printed ones should instead be considered more like those "boutique" rc models so not something for a beginner. Anyway it's not like it is gonna break at the first vaguely not so perfect landing but surely it is gonna shatter if it goes straight down

      I'm betting that it wouldn't be able to handle how hot a video TX gets. Prints melt if they get hot and that looks to be only a single perimeter or maybe two. Video transmitters get super hot.

      @@nemocheerio They say it is designed for FPV. Plastics like ABS and polypropylene can handle up to 100 celsius, and polycarbonate can handle up to 120, I don't know if a VTX gets that hot. I would like to see how stable this wing is without the vertical fins.

    Hi, I also built this beautiful wing, I made the first flight, with good final results, but kindly can you tell me divr You put the center of gravity ?, and co pleta, and you wrong the one printed on the model !!, I have built the UAV version which I only use in RC.
