That makes sense. My female is much, much easier and calm when eating, approaching her, or netting her to change the water. On the other side the male is very skidish, super alert, and nearly impossible to net. He’s also a lot more streamline and skinnier vs the female is a lot more thicker and growing at a faster rate, even though they are around the same age.
Thank you very much, your video is very useful, but I think if your video has the conclution text in before ending so I think it's better. Thank you again and nice to meet you (I'm a veterinay student from thailand who very interested your videos and website :))
Hello! Recently I fell in love with Koi fish. I'm from Panama and seems they are not that common. I live in a tiny apartment don't have space for a pond =) I found a pet store were they sell them (probably not so good as this ones but still very beautiful) they say I can have them in fish tanks? Can I? How should I take care of them on fish tanks? They are very small.
If the only way you can experience koi at this time in your life is in an aquarium, i say GO FOR IT! Keep in mind the aquarium is not a long term solution so you may need to donate the koi back to the pet store or to someone with a large pond when they get to big for the aquarium. You want to make sure you follow good aquarium husbandry to manage the water quality. Here is an Ask The Pond Digger video where we actually talked about koi in aquariums. I think you might find it interesting. th-cam.com/video/75pu_j1j6qc/w-d-xo.html
Hi I'm actually in Fontana CA right now, do you have an email I can send in my koi to? Maybe help identify the species of koi not exactly gender although that'd be great !
For these people who are hand breeding koi, how do you control what colors you're going to get? I see a lot of videos on how to hand breed koi, lots of information on how to do it, but not any many videos on the results. What the fry look like. Where does a person go to get information on breeding for colors?
These are some of the secrets the breeders don't exactly share with the general public. But we do cover some of these details in other videos in The Koi Discussions video series. Thanks for watching.
If you are breeding koi you must know the bloodline of the breeding pair and try it. Even thought you are an expert it doesn't mean you will get the color that you wanted and carfully select the best fry from the rest. That is all.
As with any animal, you want to be careful of inbreeding. With almost all animals inbreeding causes issues. But with Koi, it seems like most of their genealogy is dated back to one place. So although it is not recommended to breed brother to sister, there's hardly room to prevent some relative inbreeding. Except in my case. I'm dealing with a bunch of carp in a VERY LARGE area, who's colors have been bread out over the last 200 years. The pond was widely overlooked. I plan on breeding the colors back in. I plan on hand breeding. Taking one female, harvest the eggs, return the female back to her pond, divide up her eggs, and use more than one male to fertilize the eggs, just to see the results. Keeping the fry in separate tanks so I can see the results. If I get good results, great.. If not, no worse off than when I started. If I get some results, the koi won't be as in-bread and I'll have a wider genealogy to work with. Anything is better than the all brown I'm starting out with. In my situation, adding in new males and removing the males currently in the pond will only help. They've shared the pond too long, without getting any attention from the previous owner.
i have a baby koi, like less than 2 inches... im wondering if they can identify their caretakers... coz they are funny, whenever i come home from work the moment i call their names and go near the aquarium they always swim erratically like they are excited to see me 😊
I watched the video and still have the same question. For what he is saying would be not that difficult to identify male vs female as long both are around the same age. But if you go to a pond you will have no idea which one is male or female using that logic.

Where does Shawn get all his fabulous, huge nets?! I've looked online everywhere and can't find anything for big koi.
I found this to be a very informative video. Thank you. Keep up the great work. #buildakoipond

Oh my. My koi is 4-5 years old and like a 1/4 that size.
Feed the koi more and do water changes on your pond and you will be surprised at how fast they grow!
