  • John Coltrane's beautiful tune 'Wise One ' from his Classic 'Crescent' album
    provides the inspiration for this tutorial.
    We take some of Pianist McCoy Tyner stunning harmonic ideas and use them to construct triad pairs which we then interpolate of a static minor chord evoking different sound emotions.

    As a guitarist of 47 yrs, I find it much easier seeing these relationships on the piano. Or simply while writing notation (or going over the intervals and chord notes in my head) of what I was playing on guitar.

    Lovely! Wonderful material and I'm so glad you're offering all these different triad pair videos. Great for both me and my students! By the way, I love the i minor / vii dim triad pair over the Dom 7#9 chord too - so for the B7#9 that would be Adim and Bm. It's also really nice to play triad pairs more linearly as hexatonic scales as well, as the six note scales the pairs create you could say are in the "Goldilocks" zone - not too dense, not too thin - leaving out the perfect amount of notes to give an identity to the inherent sound, while having enough tones to offer the ear the richness it craves. Keep up the great work!

      I recall a highly illuminating conversation I had with McCoy Tyner one evening between sets. It seems that both of us were--and still are---very fond of the music of Paul Hindemith, one of my very favorite 20th-century composers, and he made extensive use of "quartal" and other similar chords in his composing, which simply grabbed me and would not let go!

I maybe should go back to maracas ? but no, your video is so relaxing, instructive and inspiring that I'd rather go on with my sax and try all I can find on a pedal of one chord too deepen my feeling of the different colors. The genius of John Coltrale deserves such a magistral approach. And your english is very clear so as your interpretation and your commentaries. Hear you soon ! greetings from France.

    with those two minors/majors a whole step apart this would qualify as e-dorian sound as a base, right? just wondering where this would be applicable generally speaking

    • @BATTIS94
      @BATTIS94 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much. It's a dorian sound with a "missing" note. If you play Em and F#m, for example, you would be playing E Dorian without the 7th. Depending on which triad pair you use, there would be a different note missing, so you get a different "flavour".

    • @TypingHazard
      @TypingHazard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Better to think less about modes and more about the triads though. Running an E Dorian scale won't yield the same sound as triad pairs, even skipping the b7 won't do that, and I don't mean just because scales and triads are different sonically but because a pair of triads imply movement, which I find a scale just can't do. Scales are... I don't want to say "too much information", but played dryly they tend to muddle the sonic landscape. Whereas triads are a stable sound unto themselves and alternating between them creates a specific sound, an A/B/A alternating pattern that creates the movement which scalar thinking rarely evokes

    • @steveberry7264
      @steveberry7264 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TypingHazard So true - and also one of the triads tends to be "inside" (ie. the Em providing R, b3, 5) while the other provides the more "outside" colour tones (ie the F#m provides the 9, 11, 13). So moving between them in interesting ways takes advantage of these differences as highlights or tension/resolution movements. Playing a scale without the differences or highlights can be the sonic equivalent of putting everything in a blender and just ending up with one flavour. Still nutritious, but can be a bit boring! That said, using the triad pairs to create a six note scale is still valid, and especially when using unusual combinations can create really interesting hexatonic scales. It's all about how musical you are from one moment to the next.

    • @TypingHazard
      @TypingHazard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@steveberry7264 I agree. Validity is an interesting subject though, isn't it - so many things are technically valid, but how often are they also musical? Reductive argument incoming - a one note improvisation is valid, but how sublimely played that single note would need to be! Likewise for any scale or triad, or of course triad pair... Still I find in 20+ years of playing that triads lend themselves to cohesive, strong sounds and tend to open the avenues of creativity when paired with other concepts (voice leading, surrounding tones, triad pairs etc) in ways that scales tend not to do - or rather, typical chord-scale theory doesn't do. Treating a chord progression as being under one scalar umbrella is about as square as it gets, for my ears anyway

    • @steveberry7264
      @steveberry7264 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typing Hazard - Yes - Your commentary is valid 😉- and musical! I wholeheartedly agree - and suspect that we "resonate" with triads partly because we are tuned to the harmonic series - it occurs in nature all around us, and in my mind influences our responses to harmony of all types - the triad pairs can strike a balance that satisfies the need for security on one hand and adventure on the other - so long of course, as you rightly point out - that it is musical in its expression - which to me can be translated as "it is played (as if) by nature" - But natural beauty comes in all sorts of shapes, so in the end, a tuned musician can make anything sound right.
