I sell Kias now and I own an Optima now. Drove an Optima GT the other day, another awesome thing though discontinued now. Keep up the good work J. @@lhwildcat21 I have driven a Stinger before. Amazing thing to drive. Back end can get twitchy easily though but it's a rear wheel drive vehicle, in the UK anyway. But felt really solid and well built and equipped with toys like no man's business. I would own one but a bit put off by the short service intervals.

    Just to be clear.... this man absolutely deserves everything that has come his way.
    I put a request out at the last minute back in 2016 to help with a prom run for my younger brother, after having just had a family death the focus was on the funeral, which was on the same day as the prom, the car for prom was an oversight on our part, but in true legendary style I got a reply from James who offered to take my brother in his Evora, I will be forever greatful for your generosity.

      If you're thinking of buying a Stinger...DON'T! Multiple defects, 4 recalls ALREADY, rust coming through paint and chrome. All around bad decision when I bought this car. Save the hassle, save your money and buy a different brand of car. Managers and service department cannot seem to communicate so I'm hiring an attorney to get my money back for this overpriced piece of metal. Paint job really sucks. I have cracked paint from front windshield to back windshield and was told not to wash the car! Are you kidding me? Most expensive car I've ever owned and I can't even wash it?! I'm so done! I've owned the 2.0L and currently the 3.3L and in 5 years of Stinger ownership they've never put a foot wrong mechanically, always put a smile on my face and been brilliant. I genuinely look forward to every drive in it and always look back at it when walking away. 6000 mile/6 month services aren't really that much of a problem. Every other service is just an oil and oil filter change and you can get 6 services/3 years of servicing for around £1000 through a dealer service plan. Fantastic value to maintain a near 400hp V6 car. Brilliant car and I feel sorry for the snobs who dismissed it. Ultimately it's their loss.

    • @shakenator92
      @shakenator92 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@chrismcfarlane8996 The 3.3 only has one trim, however the 2.0L has two trims (gt line & gt line s). I had the higher trim on the 2.0L (gt line s) which is specced the same as the 3.3. Only differences were smaller and less powerful engine (roughly 100hp less), 18 inch wheels instead of 19 inch on 3.3, no brembo brakes and no adaptive suspension. Other than that it's the same car. The 2.0L was still faster than most 'normal' cars but I found myself wanting the full fat version of the Stinger and interestingly mpg isn't that different (maybe 5mpg better in the 2.0L).
      I personally prefer the 3.3 for the instant power delivery (twin turbo instead of single turbo on the 2.0L). As you would expect, the 3.3 has more torque and overall the better choice of engine, in my humble opinion.

    Odds are the Stinger will become a classic car in the future. For one it was a reasonably priced halo car in an era where none of those drop below 7 figures, the fact KIA decided to build a sedan in a world where most people buy crossovers will probably place it among the few memorable saloons of this decade. If you want one, now's probably the best time to find one. Also, on a more personal note, I discoved your channel years ago with a video about the Mercedes Benz CLA. I do wish we lived in a world where the Wagon filled this....and frankly it still should fill this niche but I'm not unhappy with the amount of sedan options available for guys like us, most of them are cool and fast and offer tons of advantages over an SUV. I just hope Kia doesn't ditch this form factor, they totally need a Model S competitor. If they bring back the Stinger as an electric car I'll buy it. I'll spend 70k on it actually. I don't trust anyone else to make an electric sports sedan other than Tesla and I'm betting Kia will give their performance Electric Sedan an actual Steering wheel. Take my money.

Fits 2 kids now for daily transport duties and is a fun and pretty luxurious ride as far as entry level luxury goes. Recently I got into an accident and needed a rental that fit the kids seats. Medium to large sedan-wise, they only had a BMW 740i. So I had that for a week. And then going back to the Stinger, it didn't feel like a downgrade at all. I’m in a ‘67 plate and am actually looking to upgrade to a facelift model this year (ideally a new one… never purchased a brand new car before). The plan then is to stay in a Stinger for as long as humanly possible!
    Again, great video James - keep up the good work!

    My neighbour bought a Red KIA Stinger Gt AWD about 5 months ago and I picked up my Red 2023 MAZDA3 Gt AWD TWIN-Scroll-TURBO in Dec, as well, and we decided to go for a cruise when the weather warmed up. And Actually, we went for a cruise outside Milton/ Halton Hills (about 45 from Toronto/GTA-Greater Toronto Area) 2 days ago, and I must say, as GREAT as Mazdas new ‘Upscale Luxury’, premium interior and exterior is, the KIA Stinger was a BLAST to drive, and changed my mind about KIA forever !!

    I owned a 2.2 diesel Stinger for 2 and a half years and in December I received my Stinger GT. Absolutely fantastic cars, even the diesel one. Brings you great joy while driving it. I bought the GT knowing that they will cease the production. In my oppinion the STINGER IS ONE OF THE LAST REAL CARS suited for petrolheads and a real great price, if you don`t mind the badge. It will be a fantastic collection car in the near future. Your story was full of passion and emotion. Congrats.

    I agree with your summary of a really nice car. Here in Australia three States use the Stinger as their Highway Patrol chase car some white with red decals and others dar🎉 blue with white decals. This plus the abundance of antennas makes the stinger look like something from the future and not something you want to see in your rearview mirror! Enjoyed your program very much.

    Lovely story. I've never tracked my GT1. But I have hooned with it and gotten up to 155 MPH on Hwy 95 in Oregon, back in 2019. An experience that I have not sought to recreate, since it was a perfect set of conditions, most essentially, I had the highway to myself, traffic having been held back miles down the road at the critical time. The Stinger is as stable at that speed as at 70 MPH, which I found thoroughly gratifying to prove to myself. I've had the GT1 brand new for well over five and a half trouble-free years. And we've had a second Stinger, a 2019 2.0L Premium, for c. a year. I love driving both of them. And, I have been on the Tail of the Dragon, once, four times up and down it, in the GT1, back in 2019, just because.

    We've had KIAs for over eighteen years, on our fourth, to be frank I think they have always been underestimated . I remember buying our first, the manager had just returned from South Korea and said KIA plan to go right to the top. .Our local dealership is class A+ ...amazing standard, another plus. I've wanted a Stinger since it's release, KIA chauffeured my wife into town in a tomato ketchup red one, she said it was a stunner. Great video...

    • @jasono2139
      @jasono2139 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrong... Only until the last 5 to 6 years has KIA been underestimated.
      Every KIA before that was hot trash. Even their past few year models have had various fit and finish issues... Aside from their dealerships trying to minimize any warranty claims (which makes their "industry leading" warranties pretty worthless)

    I really enjoyed this James. Video was real and heartfelt. Interesting to me as I seriously considered buying a Stinger. Two things that ultimately nixed that decision was, the fact I could never reconcile the reflector in the rear quarter, it just doesn't fit an otherwise quite handsome car and, the dealer local to me are less than wholesome people to deal with. So, I bought a Genesis G70. In Australia, we get the 3.3 twin turbo six, and aside from some suspension tweaks, it is basically a Stinger under the skin. A lot of what you had to say in this video really resonates with me. The driving prowess and just how quick they are mostly. The Genesis is a bit nicer inside, but I really understand the fondness you have for the Stinger.

    When it was new, I drove a Stinger GT on the same day as a v6 Panamera, and the Stinger was the better drive. So I hate to see when people write "Great car for a Kia" - this is a GREAT CAR.
    I would never buy one, but for one reason - the Stinger is not available with a manual gearbox. Then again, these days nothing is.
    And you never know - if I ever encounter a Stinger GT with a blown transmission, I may just be forced to find out if the MTM6 manual gearbox from the Genesis Coupe v6 can be bolted in...

    Congratulations James, and thank you. For me this is the best video you have ever done. You captured the audience (well, at least this one 😊) on a new level. Combining the stories on you+Kia and you+TH-cam was a brilliant idea, but how you delivered them was even better.
    As a non Brit, brittish journalism can to me sometimes feel a bit distant (big generalization of course). Maybe it is a language thing, English is not my first language so I guess I don't get all the nuances but I often see focus on a lot of information, a lot of words. Very correct and "jolly" but a bit strict and you have to read between the lines to find the passion, the real feelings.
    In this video, when sharing your amazing experience from the trip to USA, you were brave enough to let your guard down and shared openhearted your emotions from this important time in your life. By doing do, you invited us to to take part in that experience on a new level. It was like I was there with you and for me, that is the difference from a good story and a great one.
    So thanks again and keep up the great work. 👍

    Amazing story for an honestly amazing car. I've wanted one since they were first announced and have come close to buying one a few times while settling for more affordable (albeit more responsible) buys instead. Once I heard that they were killing it off (back in December) it became do or die time. I ordered exactly what I had always wanted (gray/red leather/AWD). After 3 months of owning it, it has been one of my happiest decisions. I once again enjoy driving in every aspect. Did my first big drive in it yesterday and it was honestly the easiest 9+ hr drive I've ever experienced. Previously had an STI that was fun to drive but miserable for daily driving. Then a K5 that was comfortable for daily driving but boring to drive. The Stinger is truly perfect in both aspects. Fun and comfortable. 3 months into owning it and I still smile like a child on Christmas when I get into it.
    So far I have no complaints with the car. Despite the exhaust opening up to be a bit louder in sport mode (not sure if this is a US only thing or not), I'd personally prefer it to be a little throatier but that can always be fixed with aftermarket.

I found this video because I’m a Kia K5 GT-Line enthusiast, and I thoroughly enjoyed your story. I hope you become a massively successful mainstream presenter as a result of your sincere, compelling, down to earth storytelling ability. Kia deserves kudos for its current approach to providing extensive tech, great design, and pure driving fun for the average consumer while so many other OEMs are abandoning the customer in pursuit of maximum profit per unit sold (aka: “ upmarketing”). While this video is about the Stinger (now discontinued), the K5 GT (and GT-Line) provides so much of what the Stinger had for such an excellent price.

At 6’2”, I can sit behind my drivers seat and fit two golf bags in the boot. Plus the sound system is comparable to cars twice the price, if you tick the options list. I really wanted to buy a Stinger, but things never lined up.
    The year it came out I went for a test drive and liked it, but I’ve learned my lesson from when I bought a BMW E46 to never buy the first year of production of any model, so I shelved the plan.
    Second year I went again and noticed they removed the maintenance plan from the Stingers, and only the Stingers. I could buy a maintenance plan, but it wasn’t cheap. So, shelved the plan again.
    The following year I went to have a look again and noticed an asterisk next to the Stinger’s price. That asterisk indicated that VAT is not included, so essentially the car’s price went up by 5% in a stealth way.
    I think then the new refresh came out. Went to look again and then the salesman told me that the front brakes were not covered by the warranty, which was known to warp and was very expensive to replace.
    So, when all this stuff starts to be added together, suddenly the price of a BMW 440i GranCoupe is not that far away. Same story Stateside that it was let down by KIA dealers.

    Thank you for this beautiful story. It saddens me to see great affordable cars such as the Singer or the Giulia failing miserably because people prefer those useless SUV's. If I was a dad, conscious about the household money, the Stinger GT would definitely be my first choice. (And that's coming from a petrol head who daily drives a V8 Vantage and enjoys from time to time a top of the line BMW E39.)

      Well said, SUVs are cars for those with no idea about driving enjoyment, boring drones that just copy the mouth breathing superhero movie consuming masses. Why would you CHOSE to buy an SUV if you don't have use or need of one? The funniest of all are 'sports SUVs' the most moronic jacked up crap of all SUVs. These versions are the most moronic of the lot, a massive waste of a powerful engine in a heavy, oversized poorly handling monstrosity (see the Lamb Urus, Porsche Cayenne, Aston DBX etc) Drives me mad, people have zero taste or sense!

      @@davekennedy6315 Exactly. I have nothing against a real Range Rover or even a Touareg if you've got the need for it. But then why not go for a Land Cruiser that is actually a good vehicle? Ah yes... The Toyota badge doesn't appeal. I think even people with no idea about driving enjoyment can beneficiate of a good car. I have successfully convinced two people of my family/friends to at least test drive a car in addition to the SUV or Crossover. Both of them ended up buying the car. Octavia instead of Karoq and A5 instead of Q3. Non-car people aren't always that indiferrent to driving refinement.

      @@Supergirafe80 I get you and agree, I should have said that I exclude farmers and others that actually NEED a large offroad capable vehicle. It is the fact that now EVERYONE wants one of the bloody things, even the fake FWD ones. Manufacturers are literally stopping making the normal height hatchbacks and saloons due to everyone's obsession with SUVs. Madness.

      Perhaps you should drive an Alfa Romeo Stelvio. They certainly drive better than a lot of “cars”.

    • @Supergirafe80
      @Supergirafe80 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@iamthebroker No thank you, I have driven a Giulia Veloce quite a few times and I don't see why such a good car should be made worst for absolutely no benefit. In a bubble, the Stelvio is probably OK. But compared to something actually gorgeous and very good to drive , it sure is quite useless vehicle. The Stelvio looks like a Giulia that got infected and swelled up. It's impossible not to see that if you look at both side by side. It's also impossible to unsee it once you've seen it. Despite those facts, the Stelvio sells more than a Giulia estate would ever have.

    That is a really nice story. You are on an interesting journey and I'm glad I found your channel. Unlike the youtubers 'I'm a wealthy prick and I just bought this rare hypercar for shitloads of money this week', your views are interesting and well put and it's fun to watch your videos. Good work, mate!

    Lovely sentimental video. Was like watching a documentary not a car review.. Great to see the love for kia as a brand and company is still there and it hasn't just been used as a stepping stone to further your career on you tube then to be tossed aside when bigger brands and fancier cars have come knocking at your door

    Lovely video. Oddly enough, for a mostly, actually all talking video, I didn’t once become bored. Mostly because of your humility and sincerity. Thank you.

    James, all those people who helped you?
    I’m pretty confident it was a mixture of them being big hearted folks.
    And….you have talent and are also one of those folks with a big heart.
    It’s win / win.

    That, is some story.
    And in the midst of the troubles and strife, and genuinely frightening things going on in the world it does restore a little faith in the ultimate kindness of humanity hearing of the great folks who came to your aid.
    As for the Stinger, I commented on your 370z review I’d never really want to part with it.
    But, having recently been out in one of these, I may well be changing my mind.

    My wife's daily driver is a '21 Stinger GT with the 3.3L twin turbo that we got new for 35k (USD). We have put 40k miles on it with only minor issues like the hatch rattling and a few cheap interior bits but no mechanical issues whatsoever. This is one of the best vehicles we have ever owned and it is surprisingly practical with the hatchback 😃

    I fairly recently found your channel and thought of it as review channel. But it’s so much more than that. Your ability to tell a story is just so engaging. Thank you for providing such a refreshing approach. Perhaps I should start looking into a stinger before it’s too late.
