When I was a kid my buddies dad had an auto repair shop in our neighborhood. We used to hang around there when we were bored and occasionally we would luck out and get a ride in something cool. One day he asked us if we wanted to go for a ride in a customers car he had just finished working on. That day it was a '71 or '72 Trans Am identical to the car featured here. He was an accomplished stock car racer so needless to say it was a ride I've never forgotten! It was the early 70's and I was 11 or 12 years old at the time so the car was almost new. Fortunately I just bought a '71 T/A that has been sitting for 20 years! It's incredible how much of an impression these cars made on us we were young! I'm a Mopar guy but the 70-73 Trans Am is one of the best looking cars ever made. Pontiac definitely made the coolest muscle cars out of any GM division
I own a 1972 455HO engine complete with the 7f6 heads, it's been in my family since 1973. It has trw L2394 pistons, fat comp cams bump stick, 850 Holley hp series dbl pumper that sits on a torker 1 intake. Exhaust is hooker competition series 2 1/8 headers. A Muncie M-21 is employed to transfer power. I have it in a 1975 firebird with a 1973 front clip and ram air hood. I wish there was some way I could find the car it came in. I plan on leaving it to my son, I told him I would haunt him if he sold it. 😁 Beautiful machine featured in this video, thanks for posting. 👍👍🏁🏁
I remember these back when I was a kid . My older brother bought a blue with white strip 1972 trans am in 1978. I remember watching him pushing the gas pedal to the floor and the hood scoop would flip open and you could hear the carburetor sucking air and watch the gas gage on dash loosing gas ⛽. The scoop had a solenoid in it to make the flap open when flooring the pedal. This was the last year of the functional hood scoop because of air pollution noise. They said It was to loud. Very strange !. Those were the good old days.
I was 13. My cousin got one of these new. I’ll never forget when he pulled into our driveway when he got it. Thought it was coolest car I’d ever seen. He traded in his 68 Gto for it.

My first car was a 73 Firebird in Buccaneer Red w black interior. Got thumbs ups everywhere I went. The seats were Super comfy. Air shocks in the rear. Miss it, Every Single Day.

I agree with you, it sits a couple inches too high all the way around. I personally don't care for the way this one sounds either. Almost sounds like it has glass packs on it. Not the way I remember them sounding with the factory cross flow muffler. Personal taste I guess. Otherwise a gorgeous car!
Great show / vids. love em all. This one in particular. Learned to drive stick and got severely bitten by the muscle car bug by this same car. (but w. blk. interior) An older neighbor had the car bug from the 50's and had so many cool cars. Many I've seen on your show. He let me learn from him. I'm in debt to him for life. In college, ‘72-76, I had a 1970 Boss 302. One of my fraternity brothers got Trans-Am in 73 I think. I had the opportunity to drive it (sensibly) a few times. I was really impressed and maybe a little envious that his car had A/C, power steering and windows and an automatic. It had quick, precise handling and didn’t feel “Big Block” heavy. I don’t know if it was a 400 or 455. The Boss 302 was raw, the Trans-Am more polished.
My friend bought one very much like the one in the video in 1988. He bought it off a guy working in a garden nursery in Ventura, California, who spoke very little English. The guy's wife had to interpret the negotiations from $1k to $950. A deal was struck, and my friend had his prize; a 1972 white TA with 4-speed. Even back then, before internet, he knew it was rare (my friend grew up in a Pontiac family, who had subscriptions to magazines, which I believe included Pontiac-centered magazines). He let me drive it a couple times, and at that time, it was the fastest muscle car I had ever driven. He won quite a few impromptu stop light drag races as the car looked fairly ratty, and people didn't think it 'looked' fast, lol. Supra turbo--bye, bye! Mustang GT--see ya! New TA and/or IROC--adios!! A time coming up on a ratty '71 Chevelle...well, not so much. He ended up getting into law school because of all the tickets he racked up and tried to fight in court, LOL.
For me, this is the jewel in the crown when it comes to muscle cars.....How ever I was not to impressed with the saddle interior.....On the cameo white paint, I would have ordered the blue interior, to compliment the blue stripes......But still a very beautiful car from a great era...........Thanks Brothers for the video.

I agree! It's one of those cars that looks so good you can't point to any single design feature that makes it stand out. It just looks fantastic from any angle! One of these cars made a huge impression on me when I was a kid. My friends dad owned a repair shop and he took us for a ride in a customers '71 or '72 T/A after he'd worked on it. He was a very successful local stock car racer and needless to say it was a ride I've never forgotten! I am fortunate enough to have just purchased a '71 T/A that has been sitting in a guy's building for 20 years collecting dust. Working on a mechanical restoration and it is now running and driving after all those years! The torque is incredible! Best to you in your search, I hope you find the car you're looking for!
Most people think that 1972 was the year that all the power numbers of GM cars dropped significantly. It just seems that way because they started rating the engine horsepower and torque numbers with the engine installed in the car rather than the old way with just the engine alone on a stand...so naturally on paper it looked like the cars lost a lot of power between 1971 and 72. But in reality the 1971 and 72 455 HO engines are identical. I'm a Mopar guy but I've always had a soft spot for Pontiac's. That's what my grandfather always drove. He always told me that when he was young in the late 1950's the Tri Power Pontiac's were the fastest cars on the street. He had a 2 door 57 Chieftain he bought new but his was a 347 4 barrel...not the Tri Power. He said he really wanted a 57 Bonneville but couldn't afford it with its Cadillac-like price tag lol

By 1975 the Trans Am and Formula Firebirds were way way diwn on power and catalytic converters put the nail in the coffin.

I recall looking at a used '71 Formula that was fully loaded with a 400/4 speed. Beautiful interior/exterior, fully loaded but the motor was beat. Same dealer had a '70 Road Runner with a 383/4 speed and air grabber - equally beautiful and and equally junk motor.
If I was buying a brand new car in 1972 it would be a 455 HO-4 speed Formula Firebird. I like the cleaner styling of the Formula Firebird better than the T/A...although I would love to own either one. Pontiac was the only manufacturer who was still building real muscle cars after 1971

I am doubting it was originally a California car as it seemed that all California muscle cars had autos. He had it for several years as his daily driver while a student at UC Santa Barbara. It was a fast car, but not sure if the 455 was original or not. But someone mentioning comparing a '72 to a '73 SD got my interest. I never realized how rare the '72 TA's really were till years later and the internet!
That’s a very cool looking car. Very cool. However, why did Pontiac use such unusual interior color combinations? This one is saddle, and I recently saw another white and blue car with a red interior? Both should have had black or possibly blue interiors.

With the lower compression ratio, it had less horsepower, but how much of the additional power from a higher compression ratio set-up was actually usable?
The ride height on this car is too high. Exhaust note is not original. Really nice looking car. Love to own it. My brother owned a 70' Trans Am completely stock.
That is a complete disgrace to put the HO after the 455. There is nothing about this engine that is HO. 300hp for and HO is simply laughable. The poor thing can barely burn out.

That reverse shaker hood scoop just defines Pontiac as a leader in styling!

My favorite styling of all the Pontiacs. The flaring nostril grill gives this car a Great White shark look to it.

The car appears to sit rather high . Firebirds were designed to sit an inch lower than the Camaro . Nice Bird .
