Great review. I'm using the Roland Vp 770 and it's awesome. Roland is now putting the same vocoder engine in the Jupiter X and that vocoder can also be found on the V Synth GT .
Novation mininova is my preferred vocoder (using a blue encore) but I do love that TAL vocoder. One of the best free plugins for vintage vocoder sounds.
I agree....:its actually better than two other software vocoders I payed money for, not even close really. I’ve thought hard about the VP-03, but I’m gonna wait until the Waldorf STVC comes out. I’ve been wanting a Streichfett, and the addition of a vocoder, and that lovely Blofeld keybed might be a winner for me. At the same time, the demo Behringer released of their vocoder sounded almost exactly the same as the original VP-300.....it supposed to be $800-1000, not sure I can do that for phased out strings, but the vocoder does sound outstanding.
@@Deeplycloseted435 Yes-I just checked Sweetwater and they still do not have it in stock. Not sure why it is so slow to arrive for sale--but hopefully that is because they are making SURE there are no bugs upon actual release!
One thing I always look for in a vocoder is the ability to cross-patch between the various carrier and modulator channels, instead of having the pre-patched in the expected order. It greatly expands their usefulness for sound design, but hardly any offer this.
I have, check my IG back like a few years ago. That said, I have the ultimate (ok that’s a lie) but, a vocoder video coming out Tuesday on the channel. So yeah, I compare a few and add my thoughts. It’s mainly a Moog vocoder video though.
@@NoirEtBlancVie Cool!!! That sounds very interesting and I am definitely looking forward to watching your new comparison video once it is released. Thanks!

I've got a Microkorg, an Electrix Warp Factory (sure, it's not a synth, but a standalone vocoder, and an awesome one at that), and a JP-8080. Unfortunately, I am in the process of moving, so I have yet to try the vocoder out on the JP-8080 (I finally just got one, I've wanted one for about 18 years).
Thanks for keeping it simple and honest even when you know Roland might be watching, maybe org will through us a bone and come out with a analog vocoder volca!
Edgar Moreno dude, if they did a real analog vocoder I'd go nuts!!! Roland I swear sees all! I kinda went a little harsh on the score, but at least I said it's built well lol. Always good to see you here!
Nice review. I'm in the market looking for the best vocoder. So which Synth has the best vocoder sound if this one is okay? I saw you had pictures of other synths with vocoders that were better. Do you have a review of the best vocoders?
+Preben Hoegh - I asked him the same question, so I'll just copy what his reply was; "Ooooooo, it's gotta be the MS2000B, not because it's the best best, but because I know exactly how to make that one sound great with EQ."
It's a very limited box, a one-trick pony even, but I think it does its trick pretty well. I bought mine because of those strings and human voice sounds, which are a staple to get that classic Vangelis vibe, and with the proper effects and mixing, it sounds beautiful. The addition of midi is a huge plus for live performance as well. Another bonus is the USB connectivity, which adds the possibility of connecting a carrier signal, which isn't as versatile as having a physical input but is good to know its there. A final recommendation is to use a different mic other than the included in the box, which has a lousy sound quality.
Max16032 good points! I've owned lot of vocoders over the years, so I was planning on doing a video on how to help musicians achieve better vocoder sounds. I don't know if I should do it or not though. This video took longer than expected so I just feel lazy now haha
Got this weird problem that vocoder and human voice only work when ensemble (chorus) is enabled. Am I overlooking something? Just figured the OUT only does this, on phones I get results as aspected.
Unlike the VP-03, the VP9000 is not a vocoder. It is a sampler that has realtime pitch shifting, timestretching, and formant manipulation of samples. Yes, you could play a vocal sample back as a harmony or chord through a connected midi keyboard to make a single vocal sample sound like a choir, but the VP9000 does not work like a vocoder. Also, the sample has to be processed (encoded) before it can be played back on the keyboard in realtime. Now Roland's later Variphrase machines, such as the VP550, VP770, VP-7, and the V-Synth or Jupiter X with the Vocal Designer functionality, are in-fact vocoders. Your voice is processed in realtime as you speak directly into the microphone while playing notes on the keyboard simultaneously. The VP-03 was designed to emulate the classic Roland VP330 synth/vocoder. A similar clone that is analog and much closer to the original VP330 is the Behringer VC340. I used to own a VP9000 and currently own a VC340. I hope this helps to answer your question.
you think the VP-01 would a good choice for those who wanna learn how to do 80s synth wave stuff, modern-funk or even new wave? if not do you have any recommendations?
That’s tough, if you want to get the VP03 just because it’s fairly cost effective I’d say absolutely, go for it, but I don’t love the tone. What’s the budget, what’s your timetable to purchase it?
@@NoirEtBlancVie i feel that, the budget would be the mid range price maybe $400-$500. timetable wise whenever I hit that goal lol. the yamaha reface line or Roland's Gaia SH-01 seem like my next option for polyphonic. i own a monologue, and I'm really happy with it. but I'm not sure on everything yet.
