When we ( furniture and cabinetry ) have to look at any project . It's almost say 90% of the time . Well the piece you use for 1 guitar is what I throw away working on 1 color sample .
So we have to do it completely different . Not like the big 3 mile long finishing line companies ( Home Depot/ Lowe's ect. ) We compete with them .
Same results but in 5-7 steps not 17-21 step's .
I don't use Stain prep ( scam )but I 95%of the time use wash coat's . Do to volume of work , time , oxidation , control . ( Ever piece MUST and WILL match the original sample all 15 miles of trim , 750 door's and so on. Every stick exactly the same , control )
So when I comment it's not me being mean or something like that .
I'm just sharing value . Took years to get to 1 piece of any sample matched in 1 attempt .
Oak to Walnut ? Simple .
Walnut to Oak ? No wood bleach ? Give me an hour .
Any Sapwood ? That took 25 years . I hate Sap Staining 😂
I really enjoy your work keep it up .
    P. S. Lacquer thinner works better than Mineral Sprits for dining splinter's 😂😂😂

Hi, I'm an absolute fan of your channel, and recommend it each time I get a question about staining. That said, above 400 does not really polish the wood, it is the sawdust becoming so thin that it acts as a grain filler, hence, instead of being trapped by the surface, photons rebound). I sand up to 4000 especially Derek Kimball tops; It is then all about tiedous cleansing (couple of time with alcool and then a tack cloth). A very very smooth surface, especially with Angelus gives astonishing results (it is also true with odie's oil and, on a 4000 sanded surface, tru-oil gives a gloss after just a couple of layers). I love the tee-shirt ! 😂😂

    Derek,
Greetings from across the pond! Love your videos…. Always get something out of them. But I have a query regarding maple veneer. I am considering purchasing a LP kit that has a quilted maple veneer top. The advice though is not to use stain directly onto the veneer for fear of blotchiness. Is this a real potential problem, or is there an easy fix?
    All the best
    Gren

Thanks i am learning so much. I have a question about the dye. Can you use the suede dye? I want a light pink. I was hoping to mix something? Thank you

I just bought a red mallee burl drop top for my first guitar build, would you recommend filling the holes after the stain or before?

Love your channel! You inspired me to dye my 80's era Ibanez 540R like your PRS Dragon Breath build. (It looks great!)
In light of the recent Jacksonville shooting😢, I'm not sure that shirt sends the right message, tho...

    @BIGDGUITARS
What do you use on top? What is the procedure?
    Stain ( waterbased/oil)
Then…. Does it matter what you use depending on the stain?
Then is there something over that? Thank you

From the U.K. here, can I ask, is there a direction you sand? Up and down only? Circular? Or it doesn’t matter?
    Cheers Paul

Do you use water based stain, that’s mixed with water? If you mix with water won’t you get raised grains and you need to sand again?

D...I absolutely LOVE watching your videos. At the end of this one, you mentioned veneers and how you get one shot..does that mean no sanding, period?..prep or otherwise? I risk the redundant question only because I have one of those eBay kit LP's that I'm getting ready to put color to, and am modeling a PRS layout of extreme royal blue, almost violet to a soft red, almost fuscia in the middle/pup area, and don't want to lose the figuring that is present. I'd be happy to send a pic of what I'm chasing, but didn't want to clog up the comments section with photos

@@bigdguitars BTW, thank you for all your videos. I'm building a new body for my kit-built doubleneck, and you've inspired me to dye the top, which is just a plain maple veneer. I ordered Angelus' assortment kit to experiment with a few colors, though I expect I'll go with a blue burst. I think that will look good with the gold hardware.
