SNL test the shows every Saturday. They have a live audience in the afternoon. They run through the show and based on the responses when they select what they will do that evening. The audience is prompted to cheer for the musical guest when they come on, but during the sketches, they don't. I have been at SNL and I have also gone to Trevor Noah tapings. On TN they ask you to cheer for the guest (usually they are cerebral guest that only geeks would cheer for) but if the host or skits are not funny then it will be a flat joke, with a bad response.

I don't know if McCarthy appeared in any other sketches on this show, but if she didn't, that may explain how she was able to memorise her script. The SNL schedule is so tight that sketches continue to be rewritten right up until 11:30 on Saturday night. Consequently, performers - especially those in multiple sketches - don't have a chance to memorise their lines. The reason Bill Hader used to always break-up as Stefon (which he covered with his trademark hands-over-the-face) was because he was often seeing the jokes on the cue cards for the first time live on the show.
Gemma - besides her just being good and professional at what she does, I got the feeling that the character was easy to stay in because it was all anger. She could just throw all her emotion and focus into that anger. Also she's played this type of character before in The Boss. And don't forget, they rehearse.
Melissa McCarthy put EVERYTHING into that skit! I’m surprised nobody got hurt by that podium. I like how she just breezed past her few small mistakes, which was absolutely the right move. I was also amazed she could pull off that chewing gum bit. Awesome!

I didn't notice that at first, but it's true. I don't pay that much attention to McCarthy and tend to underrate her, but this was really watching a master at work.
She is a master with comic pacing and timing. Kristin Stewart was the actual host. We know Stewart is not a comedian, but you could barely understand her delivery of mumbles and awkward stumbles. When there is a bad host on SNL, they will usually bring in a quick replacement filler during blocking nights on Thursday / Friday. To put it simply, most of the sketches with Stewart were probably too bad to air, so McCarthy was brought in.
This is probably SNL's biggest moment since 2008, when Fey & Pohler came on as Palin & Hillary! Great work, SNL & Melissa McCarthy! This has Trump completely rattled, seeing his minion best depicted by a woman!

I don't know if McCarthy appeared in any other sketches on this show, but if she didn't, that may explain how she was able to memorise her script. The SNL schedule is so tight that sketches continue to be rewritten right up until 11:30 on Saturday night. Consequently, performers - especially those in multiple sketches - don't have a chance to memorise their lines. The reason Bill Hader used to always break-up as Stefon (which he covered with his trademark hands-over-the-face) was because he was often seeing the jokes on the cue cards for the first time live on the show.

The podium was made from very soft and light materials. It's like a big foam prop.

Gemma - besides her just being good and professional at what she does, I got the feeling that the character was easy to stay in because it was all anger. She could just throw all her emotion and focus into that anger. Also she's played this type of character before in The Boss. And don't forget, they rehearse.
Watch again: when she does the line, "the President will not be deterred" holding up the turd, she almost loses it. What a pro!
The sad thing is, this isn't that far off from the actual Press Conferences.

I didn't notice that at first, but it's true. I don't pay that much attention to McCarthy and tend to underrate her, but this was really watching a master at work.
She is a master with comic pacing and timing. Kristin Stewart was the actual host. We know Stewart is not a comedian, but you could barely understand her delivery of mumbles and awkward stumbles. When there is a bad host on SNL, they will usually bring in a quick replacement filler during blocking nights on Thursday / Friday. To put it simply, most of the sketches with Stewart were probably too bad to air, so McCarthy was brought in.
I don't think Meryl Streep could have done this better.
It's 2019 and even though "Spicey" is long gone this is still amazingly hysterical. A true piece of classic comedy.
