Joy, you are NOT fat. Please never ever say you are fat. Because you are not. Not one bit. You are beautiful. You always will be. You are an incredible dancer and always will be. I love you xx

I'm sure that she just meant fat for herself... Not literally fat in general. Like when you put your clothes on and they are tighter and you know you've gained weight.

It was amazing to see the change in your dance after zhanna told you to stop being negative. Total change. Remember... You have to work on your state of mind, not just your body. You have so many people here cheering you on - we all think you're fab. We just want YOU to know how fabulous you are too.

So impressed with your ability to understand that, as awful as having that costume not fit must have felt (I can imagine), you KNEW you needed to eat, you KNOW you can move as fast as you need to... I'm just so impressed at seeing you take a moment where your eating disorder could really take hold and hurt you and instead you fought through it! You have a beautiful dancer's body and you have nothing to hate or feel ashamed of. You're in such good shape. Don't let the eating disorder twist that - not that I think you are, but I just know if I were you, it would be so hard... I hope you feel better soon. You're going to own this variation!! Lots of love.

  • @BittaJam

This is a very hard part. You don't move fast enough, but at the same time you are in a hurry to make all the movements and at some points you go ahead the music. You are too strained. What you really have to do is to relax. I know that it feels impossible, but it's the only way. Listen to the music. Don't hurry, don't rush it, this music has a very strict count, you just need to let it lead you. I really hate this part for the amount of useless movements, but as you have to do them, you need to find your own tempo. Don't make these pas big, make them small, don't jump high, as you don't have enough time to go up and down in music, make your steps smaller and please relax your arms: try to relax your wrists and your fingers, don't try to squeeze the air.
You are wonderful, your progress is very visible, just don't let this stupid part break you. It's just a tiny tiny moment of your career, you'll get through this and get to another chapter. You can make it, and you can make it right!

So glad your foot is feeling better and that the tutu got fixed! Sometimes it's hard to pull yourself out of a negative space, but tomorrow will be better. You have done so much to inspire us. I went to my first ballet this weekend, and it was amazing. I can't wait to go again! Thanks for introducing us to your world!

Hey, Joy, not sure you knew, but I understand that what you are calling the Diamond variation was in fact based on the new (when the ballet was first made) invention called... Electricity! Yes, all those lovely pointing gestures you are making with your hands in the choreo were meant to emulate sparks of exciting electricity! Perhaps that will give you a way to dance the piece with sparkling energy! Best of luck.

+NobleDesignMedia Love that little bit of history! thank you for letting us know!

    • @shelleynobleart
      @shelleynobleart 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

+NobleDesignMedia FYI I learned about the role's origin on scholarship with San Francisco Ballet's Summer Program in the 70's. They taught us Ballet History as one of the courses. Now I'm glad because, as ballet is traditionally passed along orally, these bits of history can become lost. I poked around online to see if I could find more and culled the following from a 2007 ballet forum discussion on the subject: Enjoy!
"[Petipa's] choreography embraced many new developments of the day. In the fifth fairy variation (Violante, who brings the gift of temperament), Petipa wanted to show the sparkling power and darting nature of electricity, then a new innovation that greatly impressed him."
Petipa actually attended a science lecture in St. Petersburg which featured a large static generator and a lot of different things which acted as dischargers, most colorfully, the lecturer's own fingers. I just hope that lecturer was well insulated, as some of those old static generators could develop quite a wallop of a charge. Anyway, "Mr. P." thought that it looked neat, so he wanted to incorporate the image in the new show.
Act 3's jewel quartet was originally conceived as a foursome of additional fairies: the fairy of gold, of silver, of sapphires and of diamonds. (see p. 372 of wiley's A CENTURY OF RUSSIAN BALLET, where he provides his translation of the 1890 libretto.) i think there are sketches and even photos of the original 'jewel' foursome all fitted with fairy wings.

+NobleDesignMedia Thank you! I was also in the SF summer ballet program...1970 and also 1973. (I don't remember there being a Dance history class at that time however.) Did you have Mr Vilzak? He gave beautiful combinations. I just loved him! Also had his wife Madame Schollar for variations class.

I can totally understand the whole constant self-critical banter, as dancers we tend to be over-critical of ourselves. Every little fault in something you can't do, feels like your own body is failing you. But do remember that you are doing the best you can, even if it doesn't seem so. If you feel you have to do X hours of training, but you are too exhausted and you can only do 2h less, than, that IS your best at the time. When a rehearsal is getting worse and harder the longer you do it, sometimes you need to take a break, no matter how much it feels like you don't have the time- sometimes getting different perspective and some inspiration and only then returning to it makes your dancing better, even if you don't actively work on your body. Half of being a great dancer comes from battling your own mind:P Good luck with the piece you're working on! Take a day rest if you can and do something non-dance related(like a trip?) may be, so you can look at it with refreshed eyes. Remember that it's half about what your body can do, and half about expression of something, art, emotion, your own artistry that you can put it. You can't do that if you're exhausted and frustrated with yourself. We can always work more and be better, but at the moment you are the best that you can currently be. Hope any of this helps. I know how it is since I've been having some issues lately, and every going to practice is a battle on it's own(sometimes successful and sometimes not so much). If you ever visit Belgrade, let me know please! It would be so interesting to see you in person, show you my studio etc. (well, it's not mine, but it's like a home to me for the last few years:))

I don't know if it means anything, but I am always utterly in awe of your movement and that includes
I'm 30 years old and to me, you ARE the Diamond Fairy. I may have heard of the role and quite possibly have seen something in passing but you will always embody this beautiful, intricate, and FAST role. Know that you were chosen and that your dedication is bringing her to life for everyone who is blessed enough to see you breathe life into her as you dance.
    I hope this makes sense.
I know that we cannot reach through and pull you up and encourage you, that real change is on the individual...which is so frustrating when you see someone you care for is hurting in some way. Just be patient and love yourself and your limitations! You love a good challenge, just see them as things to overcome. You've got this, Joy! (And we are all here cheering you on and including you in our prayers)

Girl - get those carbs in, the car won't drive without fuel 💕 chin up joy, we all have those bad days, but get your energy up and you'll be fine - I find moving fast is way easier if you relax your hips, keep your legs into you and really hold the strength in the inner thighs and torso -easier said than done I know but I have really long legs so it's hard to move fast but I can do it much better if I take the tension out of my legs 😊 good luck - stay positive -- and new choreo on you yay!!!!

I'm sorry you're not going to Amsterdam, but to get a choreographer that wants to use you as his muse & create something for YOU is AMAZING and exciting!
I'm glad your foot is feeling better, please remember that if you don't eat your body will attack & breakdown your muscles... But you know that... If only there was teleportation, you'd have a bunch of us fussing over you.

Joy, I was watching some videos from my rehearsal footage of a variation I watched it wondering why one of them looked better than the other when they both are about the same and then I realized that I was excited and really passionate in the one and the other one I was not. That really shines through in a persons dancing, joyfulness is a choice and it is necessary for a beautiful variation. Pray and ask the Lord and seek him, he will give you more than you can ask or imagine. You are beautiful dancer and you have inspired me so much as I watch your blogs everyday. Also, I learned a lot when I got rejected from my dream trainee program this year, One of those things being that this world is not about us, we know this but do we actually live it and know it? Dance is a very consuming art form, it's better to be dancing for someone else, in the sense that we can get so full of ourselves and lose the bigger picture. We were not placed this world or place to do what we're doing for ourself.

Joy, we have the same problem in Canada with boots. However, you should be able to buy some good moisture-repellant spray. I can't wear my boots without it. I watch your vlog religiously and, even though I am much older, I really understand your moments of self-doubt. I am a classical singer and self-criticism is a way of life in the Arts, even though I now realize that it is in no way based on what is true. Listen to your heart underneath the nattering of your brain and you will realize that, no matter how exhausted, broke and unworthy you feel, it doesn't matter: Art will always prevail. I want to tell you how inspiring I find you to be and how brave you are. Onward and upward, Joy, regardless of what your head tells you. Trust your heart, always! 🌸

    1. Dry cleaners can remove salt stains from Uggs.
    2. Costume fittings are bad for all dancers. You're using something made for another person 20 years ago. My bestie is a wardrobe mistress for one of the bigger regional companies in the states and this happens all the time. Bodies vary day to day.
    3. Stop striving for perfection and inspiration. Seriously. It just is. Enjoy the movement. Ballet isn't perfect for anyone but you are already enough.

same thing happens in boots and the lower parts of your pants in Montreal (I used to live there). it's so annoying! Zhanna is right -- try to have a good attitude if you can. Thinking of you and hoping you have a great day tomorrow. You'll be great, just let go! Also, I only mention it because you say you're fat, but I've think you've been looking extremely thin over the past few months. I've even been worried about you. It's none of my business, and I only say it because you talked about being fat. You're nothing even close to fat. Please don't say that! Try to give your body and mind a break.
