Real Meanings Behind 10 Odd Dog Behaviors

  • In this video, we will talk about 10 awkward things dogs do and explain the meaning behind them.
    Why dogs like squeaky toys
You might not realize it but your precious dog loves squeaky toys because they satisfy their prey drive. The squeaky sound of a toy taps into their instincts as it resembles the high-pitched sound that a small prey animal would make when it is attacked.
Your canine enjoys the instant gratification they get from repeatedly gnawing on a squeaker.
Picking up their food and carrying it away
You have probably noticed that your dog picks up its food from where you place it and carries it someplace else in the house.
In the wild, dogs run in packs. When they make a kill, rather than stay in the pack and fight for what is theirs. When your canine takes their food to a separate area, it means they need their privacy and want to protect their meal.
    Why dogs wink at you
Dogs often wink when they have some irritants in their eye. The irritation may be from a physical item such as dust, dirt, hair, or even cleaning sprays.
Why dogs roll around in poop
Rolling in poop is an instinctual behavior, harkening back to the days when your dog’s wild ancestors would mask their scent to sneak up on their prey. Wolves, for example, have been observed rolling in the droppings of plant-eating animals or animal carcasses to cover up their own scent during the hunt.
Canines also scent roll as a way of communicating with their "pack". By rolling around in a smelly mess, your dog can bring information back to the rest of the pack about a new thing.
Remember that what you deem as a pleasant smell might be unpleasant for dogs. For example, the smell of scented shampoos on a dog’s fur may send them running outside to roll on the stinkiest thing they can find.
    Creating hidden lair
Dogs’ wild ancestors had the instincts to hunt things and bring them back home to eat later. Our dogs today still retain these instincts. This is one of the reasons why your canine companion picks up random things such as their toys and takes them to a secret place in your house. After all, this is supposed to be their secret lair.
    Why dogs bury bones
In the wild, dogs live from meal to meal, never knowing where or when they'll eat next. When they end up with a surplus of food, they save it for later by burying it in dirt.
Burying carcasses and bones helps the meat last longer as it keeps it away from direct sunlight. The temperature of the earth also decreases with the depth of the hole, keeping the food fresher longer.
Why dogs show jealousy when you pet another animal
Scientists believe dogs are capable of jealousy in relation to any type of social creature. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that when dog owners displayed affectionate behaviors towards another pet in the house, the dog would show signs of stress and anxiety.
    Why dogs lick you
More often than not, dogs lick you to show you affection and love. Licking is also a way for canines to bond with family members. When your dog licks you, it’s their way of grooming you and showing they care about your wellbeing. And if you have the taste of some yummy treats on your skin, then your pet might have another motive for their licking behavior.
Keep in mind that dogs also use their tongue to explore the world through scent and taste. Licking people and objects is their way of touching things like we do.
Why dogs stare at you so intensely
A dog stare is actually a form of communication in the canine world.
More often than not, dogs watch you to understand what you’re doing.
Dogs and humans have a special relationship. Dogs are naturally attached to their owners and they take an interest in what their favorite humans do. Watching people is how they gather information about our actions.
Sometimes they are waiting for us to do something that will impact them, like picking up the leash to take them for a walk. Or to perform a specific command like “Sit” and earn a reward.
Keep in mind that dogs also use eye contact when they want something from you. Finally remember that if your dog looks at you with longing eyes, it is a sign that they love you.
    Why dogs eat poop
Dogs want clean spaces to play and live. Dogs often eat their puppies' feces to keep their home clean.
Eating fecal droppings is also a way of obtaining key nutrients.
While we may view poop as dangerous, it’s not as scary as we think. While eating poop from sick animals can be an issue as it can contain viruses, parasites, and bacteria, healthy poop often contains harmless bacteria, water, and some undigested food. Poop can be nutritious and help reset the gut bacteria to healthy levels.
Some dogs may also start to eat their own poop because of environmental stress or anxiety. Studies have shown that dogs who are kept alone in kennels or basements are more likely to eat poop than those dogs who live close to their people.

Yes they're bad for them, yes they can be deadly, no you should never feed a dog grapes, with all that being said, animals just like people are shockingly resilient. I've also heard never to feed your dog cooked chicken bones and it will kill them, so when I had my friend's dog come visit and live with me over Christmas and he ate a fried Chicken bone, I was mortified, but my mom told me that my Grandpa has been feeding his Border Collies chicken bones since about 1958 and unless they got hit by a car, all lived full happy lives. What I'm trying to say is, it's not like they're made of arsenic, one single grape will likely not kill your pooch especially if it's a full-size dog.

I have 6 dogs, and let me tell you, jealousy is a very real thing among them!! Two of mine are incredibly jealous and will try to push any of the others out of the way any and every time that we're trying to give them attention. Two of them are semi-jealous, and will always come running when the others are getting attention, but only sometimes do they push the others out of the way. And two of them, one being the one we've had the longest and the other being the one we've had the least amount of time, very rarely show jealousy and both usually just let the others fight for the attention. They're both timid in character and very "chill."
Having a big pack is a constant love-filled adventure!!

      Definitely jealous...
3 packs...Dad and runt, Mom, Son.
The blind runt, Helen Keller was just diagnosed with liver failure.
Idk what her Dad is going to do when she passes (6 months or so).
Helen is the smartest of course. Very sad. But she and the other 3 know what's up. They knew before we did. She's taking it well. We give her an IV bag of fluid every other day. She's worried about me more than herself.

I have two dogs, sisters, pugs, they’re not interested in toys, being 12 years old. They sleep all day, visitors are welcome, they’re well adapted and never feel threatened in their own environment. They display none of the instincts you mention. At bed time they both come in for the best cuddles of the day. They are the sweetest more adorable and loving pooches with so much patience. I would fully recommend adopting two or more from the same pack, they have continuity, companionship of their sibling/s and the additional love from their adoptive parents and have a greater life expectancy as a result of that level of support. Mine have lost their parents and the other siblings that were adopted singly, mine are thriving together as a result of their familial kinship and love and support and mega cuddles each day 🥰

When you were speaking of poop I automatically thought of my puppy yesterday eating goose poop on our walk and was going to ask my vet about it but you answered my question thank you also wanted to add my puppy 11 weeks old since 6 weeks has been obsessed with ripping up our lawn not digging necessarily just laying there and pulling up the grass like dental floss maybe it feels good between her teeth? But she actually eats chunks of mud if they lift for her constant mud eating is starting to worry that her diet isn't so good she's already been to worms checked for parasites and all of that . She is on carnivore dog food so she's definitely not missing any nutrients that I can think of I also change up the flavor I use to give her a variety of protein and meat

My family’s dog inhales her food and doesn’t take it anywhere else. Mine takes a few kibbles and eats it, does it again, and then eats the rest in front of her bowl. Once my niece attempted to wipe herself and threw it in the trash, well my dog decided to roll on the wet wipe. I didn’t have glasses on so I couldn’t see what it was. I have a dog who used to eat her poop because she can smell food in it. After much research we changed her to a raw diet and this habit disappeared in 24 hours never to return. Hope this helps someone!

I wonder if dogs also eat poop to hide the scent of their breath from prey. I had two dogs and one was more of a hunter and the other was a harmless lab, the lab never ate poop but the hunter did daily on walks. They had the same diet. Btw that reason for why they love squeakers was disturbing lol. Whats weird is my hunter dog hated squeak toys but loved to hunt little animals, yet my harmless lab loved sqweakers and rarely went after small prey.

Dogs eating poop can turn into quite quitr tricky situations, especially humsn poop. We have a dog in a large city downtown and our dog found a particular enjoyment in eating poop of the street/park and get hight of whatevers left in that from the humam who left it outside... Our trainer told us that dogs can get adducted to human poop, especially if it's from junkie's. So he careful and don't dismiss it as the wholesome answers you got on this video. Which poop they eat is very important here. One they start eating human poop, they will started to look for it intentionally.

I knew most of these habits from previous dogs I've had, but the eating of poop is something completely new with our Golden Retriever. She only does it in winter when it's thoroughly frozen into "poopsickles". The main difference between this one and the previous 3 female dogs I've had in my life is she's the only one that ever had puppies. When she gets scolded she just chomps down faster then comes running looking for praise. Makes me sick but I have to tolerate it.

On the last one… look all I know is I had a puppy once who almost dies. COULD NOT eat or drink anything. After a couple days I starting insisting on water from a medication syringe. The pup threw up it’s own shit that it ate and started immediately feeling better. Coincidence? I’m not a vet but I’d never allow it.
