  • A Trader 58 "Delta Lady" is about to leave Penarth Marina for Gibraltar - but she's pointing the wrong way. But with some skilful handling this "Lady" IS for turning.
    See how the skipper does a neat 3-point turn between the pontoons and the solid sandstone dock walls - with just inches to spare . It's all done on engines - no help from bow thrusters.
    Note that the skipper is so relaxed he disappears below to check his emails in the middle of the manoueve

    The secret here is know your boat and how it handles in various wind and sea states. This was not a tough turn to make and in fact he had a ton of room...and a level of skill and confidence that is to be expected when skippering a boat of this size in confined quarters.

    The true skill of motoring: absolute control, going with just the right amount of speed, not faster, not slower.

    In 2017 i downloaded a short vlog from the Skipper on his trip listed as Cardiff to Benalmadena its a 575 and i think a sunliner so may have cat c12 715hp fuel used 7716 lt on 1310 m and 5,89 lt per mile

    Simple! With twin screws, all you have to do is split throttle! One in forward and other in reverse...... Once cleared, rudder out in forward!

    "Delta Lady" is a Trader 575 Sunliner, twin Cat 700hp, hydraulic bow & stern thrusters. The publisher of this video does not realize that it does not take much to turn a twin screwed yacht when there is plenty of space and hardly any wind. But worse is their comment about the skipper who briefly leaves the helm after putting the engines out of gear. A skipper does not "disappear in the middle of a manoeuvre to check emails", that's not a joke but an offence against the professional skipper who took the boat to Spain.

      Absolutely. She's a big girl. I do most of my manoeuvring from the flybridge and I'll do much the same as this guy.. All looked a pretty textbook turn to me..

      I don't see or hear any use of the bow thruster here. Can you point at what time that would be?

    He's got twin screws. He better be able to spin it in a fairway with very little wind.

    WOW nice it actually has twins CAT 3208s x 2 but still wow I have the 46 foot version of this boat and am amazed

    Impressive job, epically as it appeared to be a single engine without a thruster.
    I would have turned it at the dock by hand but he was much more impressive.

      There’s no way a Trader 58 is a single engine vessel.....

      definitely a twin engine! I don't know a single Trader with a single engine.

    A single-engine boat with the right rope work you can turn a boat anywhere. twin engines, bow thrusters, come on.

  • @ozz100
    @ozz100 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    are you lot for real?? single engine and no thruster?? it's a big trader so it will have at least 2x 350hp and defo a bow thruster and probs a stern thruster, the bigger the boat the easier to maneuver IMO.

    • @michaelrutledge7048
      @michaelrutledge7048 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ozz100 Don’t know if it’s a,twin. Many large trawlers are single screw, so a bow a/o stern thruster are beneficial.

      Couldn't agree more mate. Everyone is an expert online. Put money on it most of these so called experts don't even own a boat let alone have the confidence to turn that boat in a tight space.

    It does make me laugh with all the Bowthruster talk: Any Twin engines boat on Shafts should be able to turn in it's own length like this, it's just normal boat handling. Bow thrusters do virtually nothing, and are next to worthless unless conditions are still and calm. Stern thrusters are for Skippers who are even more useless :-D

      I suppose you take the airbags out of your car, disable the antilock brakes, get rid of the power steering and braking too, and perhaps even pull the fuse for the headlights and wipers. Comments like yours are equal parts entertainment and ignorance.

    • @PiaggioCenter
      @PiaggioCenter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A Bowthruster isn't a safety item. It doesn't do anything other than pin a boat against a mooring as long as the wind isn't too strong, or pull the front off a mooring when departing. The latter can be done with a combination of fore/aft throttle and a bit of rudder anyway. I speak from ten years of experience with outdrives, single and twin screw. I watch people using bowthrusters on an almost daily basis and frankly they make me laugh. Remember I'm referring to twin screw on shaft. You clearly need the comfort of one, I guess your helming skills are equal parts entertainment and ignorance. too!? LOL

      Bow and stern thrusters make a boat more maneuverable in tight quarters, particularly boats with a greater volume of freeboard on windy days. Claims to the contrary are absolutely not true. As a consequence of this greater accuracy afforded, around the dock or other tight places, they are indeed a safety item. I certainly wouldn't use one with a 32' boat; who would, however, when you get into larger boats, say greater than 60' you are absolutely offered greater maneuverability.

      +john thompson wrong again, it says right there that it is a 58 Trader, not a 411
