Well, speaking of cultural thing, there is in fact a fundamental difference between the East and the West when it comes to responding to other people's compliments. In Western culture, when you are complimented by others on your looks, talent etc, you simply say "thank you". However, in Eastern Confucian culture, it would be considered rude or cocky if you just thank others for their compliments. That said, it is very common for parents in Chinese, Japanese and Korean society (i.e. Confucian cultural sphere) to downplay their kids' looks or talent in front of friends or relatives because otherwise it would be considered cocky. Hence Jisoo's parents telling her she is ugly.

Well, speaking of cultural thing, there is in fact a fundamental difference between the East and the West when it comes to responding to other people's compliments. In Western culture, when you are complimented by others on your looks, talent etc, you simply say "thank you". However, in Eastern Confucian culture, it would be considered rude or cocky if you just thank others for their compliments.
That said, it is very common for parents in Chinese, Japanese and Korean society (i.e. Confucian cultural sphere) to downplay their kids' looks or talent in front of friends or relatives because otherwise it would be considered cocky. Hence Jisoo's parents telling her she is ugly.
That gives a lot of perspective. Thank you for taking time to educate us on that difference.

Already commented on another comment. Do a guide before going further. 2019 I think is the best available. Unless someone can show a better one. It’s much more interesting when you have the context of seeing how they really are.
