    I visited in 1971, November I think it was. One of the teachers at school organised a trip. Belfast had only been open to the public for a few weeks. You could tell they hadn't organised everything at that time. There was still nude girly pictures on the inside of the ratings locker doors. Two months later I was off to HMS Raleigh as a new recruit. My Uncle served on the Belfast during the war as a Petty Officer.

    I visited that in 1997 when I was visiting from the US. I had no idea it was even there until we walked past. It was very interesting. Too bad Britain didn't save any battleships as museums, but you can't have it all.

    Her rich history from that mine to Korea makes her an amazing ship!
    Being one of the last light cruisers to exist and last Royal Navy light cruiser from WWII and the last to still exist makes her a legendary ship!

    When we walked through the ship in 1999 was very concerned what looked like asbestos wrapping around pipes.
    Just had to touch it and it would flake off.
    Hope they have fixed " removed" this by now.

    Extraordinary , I visited back in 1974 and I have to say that the ship is in a much better state of finish compared to back then, understandably. The IWM has done a great job overseeing the further restoration and upkeep of Belfast. I could weep for such ships as Warspite, sent to be scrapped, a sentence of death. Just think, the British Battlefleet of years past, not one left what a crying shame. Thats your politicians of the day, they could have kept one battleship for the day of restoration like the Americans did with USS Texas, so what if it rusted a lot? They fixed that up later on and so kept a 100 year old ship. The British government could have done the same but no. All you have left now is Belfast. It should really be in perfect condition given that it is the last warship of the 1930's.

    Where's the pilot house (the room where the ship's steering wheel is located)? Is that room off limits? I can't find photos or footage of the area where the Helmsman steers the ship.

    • @jamesb8418
      @jamesb8418  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s listed as the ‘Forward Steering Position’ on the tour map they provide and it’s located between the Boiler Room and the ‘B’ Shell Room and Hoist. Must just have been closed the day I visited otherwise I would have filmed it. I think the only long term closure/restoration work going on at the minute is the Flag Deck/Gun Direction Platform.

      HMS Belfast is the pinnacle of English warship construction when Englishmen were masters of the sea,she maybe even be considered the very genesis of modern warship design.
      She isn't some gaudy battleship.
      She is a sleek,fast all-weather hunter,the perfect combination of firepower,speed and technology.
      No other vessel exemplifies the seafaring inguinity of the British people better than HMS Belfast.
