I knew very little back then of gymnastics. I saw her in the 96' Olympics when I was 16yo and thought she was the most beautiful and talented creature God ever made. Wikipedia puts her 8 months older than me. I thought I was in love. haha
It's a good thing she made the most out of the time she was competing though. A world AA gold, 2 Olympic golds and 1 silver, world vault gold, plus 3 world silver medals. And she has 2 skills named after her in the code of points on vault and floor. Very impressive for such a short career
@@mht4908 *3 skills named after her, 1 on Vault and 2 on Floor (Double Tuck Front and Double Tuck Front with 1/2 twist) but not sure if the Double Tuck Front is still named after her in the Cop.
I still remember watching her win her gold medals in the 1995 Worlds and 1996 Olympics when I was a kid, me an my sisters just loved her, we had her Olympic routines recorded on some old vhs tapes that we wore out watching them so much- she was who we wanted to be! Thanks so much for posting this- there has never been anyone like Lilia since with such all around strength, skills and perfect grace 🙌
Trivia: She's one of those all-around champions and also an event champion in the same edition of olympic competition. The other was nadia comaneci in 1976 and the other was simone biles in 2016 and also larisa latynina 1956, lilia was in 1996. It's also a bit odd that these olympic years all end in 6.
No one tumbles front better than her! Nearly everyone only does ONE FHS before any skill whereas she does two which is MUCH harder and looks INCRDIBLE.
She was a Ukranian legend. Made the most of her not so long career: 2 Olympic titles + 1 silver, and multiple world medals, it's sad that we don't see much of female Ukranian gymnastics these days
Doesnt get enough credit as with most European or non-US gymnasts. This is the best female gymnast of the last 40 years and this floor routine is still the best since.
People still very much recognize her for her floor routine and for the AA gold she won. Romania was the only one being recognized for a long period of time, along with Russia. Now that the US has become a real world power in the sport everyone seems to have an issue. Gymnastics is more than just a European sport!!
In an era dominated by Russian and Romanian powerhouses, Lilia was a cup of fresh air in the world of gymnastics. Gogean and Amânar were amazing but Lilia's floor was unique and she truly deserved her gold in Atlanta AA and FX.
She won the AA for one simple reason- she made the fewest number of errors, all small ones. Especially in that code- it made all the difference in the world, and was exactly what she needed to do.
This is the ballet basis of artistic gymnastics. Otherwise, the name of this sport should change to acrobatic gymnastics. Pure art, Queen Lilia! Memorable performance until the end of times. She really performed out of her skin.
@QPHashSS77 Does it look like I give a damn about the spelling of Aly's fucking name. Yuk you are ignorant and vulgar. You talk about my spelling but you spell like a ten year old. Loser. I'm done. You can have the last word
Dance is an individual and interpretative concept. It’s not just limited to ballet. If you’re so enamored of ballet- go watch that!! The floor routines of today have their own unique qualities and individual styles, no need to demean them in favor of being a ballet performer.

This was a great routine. Her excellent dance skills gave her the edge. I think Amanar had a much more difficult routine. Her tumbling passes were in a league of their own. However, Amanar had dismal artistry which cost her the title. In my own personal scoring, I gave Lilia a 9.918 and Simona a 9.912.
Belleza, elegancia, gracia y técnica. Pero que desde que entraron las gringas y chinas a dominar esta gimnasia todo es pura técnica y acrobacia, nada de arte.
Don’t watch then. The gymnasts of today work just as hard and have just as much talent. Just because YOU don’t like them doesn’t change their abilities. Fortunately opinions like yours don’t mean much to the sport.
@@mariaellis2882 I’d say you need to do the same, considering you’re judging the gymnasts of today. Opinions are like buttholes- everyone has one but no one wants to see yours. Respect? Try having some yourself before complaining about others having it.
One of the best floor routines of all times!! She did that!!
What a beautiful athlete. Stunning, great talent
Long live Queen Podkopayeva. She is everything the gymnasts of today wish they were. Exquisite.
Just like Anna Pavlova :)
i met her
@@kiersontitus7322 Absolutely not. Anna Pavlova is too stiff and posey. And she’s not even half as successful as Lilia. She is overrated af!!
@@tambam6744 People only like Anna because shes a complete flop. They feel sorry for her and try to overcompensate by saying shes actually incredible
@@tambam6744agree i domt see the appeal of her 2008 routine its too posey
One of the best front tumblers to live :O I don't even see anyone doing front tubmling these days :/ Such beauty x graceshe was
Most of Brenna Dowell's floor routine was made up of front tumbling.
Brooklyn Moors still does a lot of front tumbling
Agreed, came here to comment this. Even in 2022 I have yet to see anyone else do her first tumbling pass except for maybe a few people.
Gorgeous! She's such a great combo of power & grace! And she points her feet so perfectly!

25 years later and this is the only floor routine that has stuck in my memory.
Mine too alongside Daniela Silivas’ FX in Seoul’88
Have you watched Victoria Komova’s floor routine in the AA final?
@@ivandalito I didn't see it at the time, but have watched it since you posted. Pretty spectacular.
@@richardwhitehead6966 yes, I love it. It’s a shame Komova didn’t win the gold
I read somewhere her grandmother would take her to watch the ballet every Saturday afternoon - it shows! Yes! Definitely a favorite!
Maravillosa ❤❤❤
Loved Lilia. She wasn't competing for long enough unfortunately. So graceful, accurate and powerful. Such gorgeous choreography!

Why did her career end so abruptly- injuries? It seemed like she could have even made it to Sydney.

How original to do front tumbling, don't see it nowadays, she is a beautiful, strong and elegant gymnast, and fabulous to watch!
Just remarkable front tumbling

Lack of a strong coaching base is the big problem. If they could get that back they would become a world power again I suspect.
Love you Lilia, you are the still the best. :D
Восхищение и трепет за невероятное мастерство Лилии!
I wish she kept her Hava Nagila song for this Olympics =} still loved this routine too tho but that's def my fave of hers
