As an Australian who has 2 weeks to go before we get to fly home, this made me quite emotional. The stress of 4 cancelled flights, anxiety of selling cars and houses, as well as removing children from school, the dismay at the horrid and abusive vitriol online directed at citizens trying to come home by local Australians and the anger at how uninterested the government is in creating a proper quarantine system that doesn't stop Australians coming home, mixed with a song I grew up with celebrating our link to our home country has just made me burst into tears in the middle of getting dinner. How did it come to this?
It’s rapidly apparent that Australia has 2 sets of rules: one for the rich, the sportspeople, the famous and another for the everyday Aussie struggling along.
Just more so to tennis players first of course. Who arnt Australians and where only here for a month. Ok buddy. Actual citizens have been waiting since last year.
The American poet Robert Frost famously wrote: “Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” Apparently not if your home is Australia. A brilliant skewering of our heartless government.
This makes me cry. My daughter has been stuck overseas since March last year. She was told that if she could support herself for three months she should stay. Then they closed borders. 10 months later...
Amazing! Thanks so much for the heartfelt and relatable tune. I'm an Australian living in Norway (on a working holiday visa) and have been trying to get home since beginning of 2021. Going to have to share this with the mates who don't believe the troubles aussie abroad have in getting home.
We have suffered from shame for too long. Look at our rhetoric over asylum seekers, now the threats to jail those attempting to come home from India. Thanks, Sammy.
Never heard of ya mate till now tbh. Juat came up in me feed... bloody fantastic! Brilliant! You and your back up singers are top knotch amazing! Fair dinkum! Thats pearler!
I won't call Australia home for some time and until some changes take place. Through some grace I found a ticket to Adelaide to see my sick sister. She died while I was in quarantine. The govt wouldn't let me see her because I was an international traveller while at the time they let quarantined interstate people see sick relatives and they let tennis players practice outside. The whole experience was cruel. BTW I didn't have COVID and it all cost 16,000 dollars. I feel shamed by my country.
Like I understand if the government just straight up banned all inbound traffic from overseas, but that should be inclusive of everyone including the rich and famous. Pretty much shows that the federal govenrment can be bought at a set price.
So many of us who have families abroad were made invisible by the acts of this government. “No appetite for reopening ” says ScoMo. It seems that rich people do have the appetite, they get fed and even get a dry martini at the end.
To those saying that they chose to leave and shouldn’t call Australia home, give your heads a wobble. Most parents, including mine, say it’s always okay for their children to come home if they’re in trouble. It should ALWAYS be okay to come home to Australia. Just because people decide to live their lives, be adventurous, explore, doesn’t ever change the fact that home is bloody home! If your parents had the same contempt for you as the Australian government, most of you would br heartbroken and rightly so.
This is spot on. The government doesn't give a shit -- no affordable flights or quarantine hotels for citizens. I don't think I'll be coming 'home' for sometime, and as a citizen, not even having the option is pretty screwed up.
Sending ❤️ to our Indian-Australian friends, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and children. You ARE US. Scomo and his pathetic government is not. We hope to get you home safely soon.
We Ozstriyans are not allowed to fly out of Ozstriya and if we do manage to escape from the Island prison then we will be jailed if we try to come back . WTF?!.How did This country Ozstriya adopt the same modus operandi as Iran, North Korea and Turkmenistan ?.Once a penal colony , always a penal colony!
How long did the government warn people to come home before they got stuck overseas.. a bloody long time.. yet people still chose to stay and travel overseas..
This was supposed to be witty & funny, and it started out that way. I laughed. By the end I had tears, because what’s happening in this country is disgusting. I was so supportive & forgiving of our government’s decisions last year. It was a modern, unprecedented thing. But it’s been 18months & we’re still in the same bloody mess.
It's close to $10,000 for me and my bf. $1,900 for flights each and then $4,500 on hotel quarantine. What sucks is the comments and remarks saying stuff anyone left overseas it's our fault we should have come home when we had the chance. We actually did, when the first lockdown in Paris hit, but we had to come back because we have jobs here and only in September is the bf's contract up so we are returning. But, the feeling is basically people living abroad aren't welcome in their own country.
Absolutely bloody nailed it. I moved to the UK in 2019 - 2021 and worked as a healthcare worker for the NHS in London. Get home to find Australia has abandoned it's morals as it's for 'the greater good' to keep Australians safe. Wild idea, you can keep aussies safe at home and also do right by the Aussies that were/are overseas. Come on Australia you're better than this.
Glad someone's still got a conscience - we used to pride ourselves on being kind and welcoming, and to see this happening to our own citizens galls. How soon before this Government turns on the rest of us? Oh ... they ARE us ...
I am one of the ones who are stuck overseas.. have been planning to come back for over a year but the rules keep changing and costs keep rising .. I am fully vaccinated yet have to quarantining in a desert hole
I also find it a terrible slap in the face that all the Hollywood stars can fly on and not give money for quarantine yet stay in a posh house then go out and party and post showing no masks and they got to go in
As an Australian who's been trying to get home for nearly a year now this made me cry like a baby. Especially "one day we'll all be together once more" ugh my heart. Why is it ok for us to be made to feel this way? We are every bit Australian as those on Australian soil.
Fear for our own well being has brought us to this? God in heaven, if you really are speaking to SCOMO, please tell him to establish safe quarantine centres instead of denying Aussies a place at the cheeseboard. Oh, and while you're at it, God, could you please find him a new empathy trainer? The last one didn't do the job.
This song is a Tribute to a Goverment that's not Beaut in anyway. The Aussies that carnt get back from India, could end up stuck there for as long as all the poor Bastards stuck in the UK. A Goverment who really puts the welfare of its citizens up to the highest bidder. It's possible they will be stuck O.S. till the cows come home, But not a Passprt holder. Citizenship of this country has become a joke, better off being a citizen of Albania, that makes travel a lot easier.Sammy J another great song, that says it All. 😢😰
We feel for you. You will be very welcome when you do get here. Ordinary Australians do want you home. 💕
Right now? A totally ballsed up vaccine rollout
It's F*CKING RIDICULOUS! I'm sorry for what you are going through mate! From one Aussie to another, keep your chin up mate!
When did you start travelling?
It came to this because of COVID-19.
It’s rapidly apparent that Australia has 2 sets of rules: one for the rich, the sportspeople, the famous and another for the everyday Aussie struggling along.
How have you gone through life and only just figured that out?
That's so true. It's as if being a Aussie is now a crime. It don't think even someone even with my name could get in,or Bazza. Thanks 😉
This is brilliant! Gets to the heart of the matter and speaks for all us Aussies overseas.
Another classic Sammy - love how you capture frustration, sadness and humour.
Not every Australian can get the Julian Assange treatment, but the Government is working hard to give it to everyone it can.
As timely and biting as always. Keep it up, Sammy!
This makes me cry. My daughter has been stuck overseas since March last year. She was told that if she could support herself for three months she should stay. Then they closed borders. 10 months later...
Thank you Sammy and your beautiful little choir, you made me cry.
Amazing! Thanks so much for the heartfelt and relatable tune. I'm an Australian living in Norway (on a working holiday visa) and have been trying to get home since beginning of 2021. Going to have to share this with the mates who don't believe the troubles aussie abroad have in getting home.
You picked a good country, always loved Norway, good luck.
Why didn't you come home in 2020
The backing singers.... 'IF YA COME HOME WE'LL JAIL YA" Brilliant!
As an Aussie currently living overseas, you summed it up perfectly!
Fantastic Sammy!
👏thank you Sammy J for addressing such important issues so well!!!! ❤💔
one of the best bits of satire ever
love the nod to the Qantas choir. Spirit of Autralia ? The mean spirit of Australia I feel.
Hurts because it's true and somehow I love it!
Pure genius as usual
It seems that rich people do have the appetite, they get fed and even get a dry martini at the end.
love it! So true (from someone who did manage to get back at vast expense and after many months).
One of your best, Sammy.
Pity it's true.
The words 'lying on a cell floor' is a little ominous SJ
Damn, right in the feels. This is brilliant, but it hurts. I'm so ashamed.
...... and the GRAMMY 🏆 goes to Sammy J. 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
BRILLIANT TRUE TO LIFE LYRICS.
CHEERS 👍
I love it! Well put together as always. Thank you.
This is spot on. The government doesn't give a shit -- no affordable flights or quarantine hotels for citizens. I don't think I'll be coming 'home' for sometime, and as a citizen, not even having the option is pretty screwed up.
Sad as it is, brilliantly done.
Brilliant and poignant Sammy J as always! Spot on!
Brilliant!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Sending ❤️ to our Indian-Australian friends, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and children. You ARE US. Scomo and his pathetic government is not.
We hope to get you home safely soon.
Brilliant and sadly accurate
This is brilliant and sad at the same time! Well done.
Brilliant and so true.
Michael Alroe
Absolutely brilliant and perfectly aimed, Lovely.
Sad and brilliant
Ouch my heart. I almost wanted to sing along 😭
Brilliant song. Says it all. Thank you :)
Gold! I try explaining this to the folks at home...it is almost impossible to come home from anywhere outside of Australia.
Brilliant and yet tragically so true.
As a stranded Aussie.....I love it mate,
Good on ya !
Fantastic Sammy J
So sad. Well done
Such beautiful music! Not sure if it's funny or tragic. Thank you Sammy J
My sentiments exactly!
Very clever. I'm one of those who's missing loved ones too. Thanks for this mate!
Me: Can i get the chaser?
parent: we have the chaser at home.
The chaser at home:
This made me cry
Thanks Sammy J!
Thank you for telling it how it is! No other country in the world has turned on their own people like Australia has
#ICantCallAustraliaHome
Hi Hannah, you're right, they call it "Aussie Fair Go". Despicable selfish and AAFYJ attitude. Cheers 👍.
How long did the government warn people to come home before they got stuck overseas.. a bloody long time.. yet people still chose to stay and travel overseas..
still playing this 3 years later :D
As an Aussie stuck overseas this hit the nail on the head. Made me cry.
Emmy I hope you’re able to get a flight home soon.
Of course. Such an obvious basis for parody... once you've done it, that is ;)
I don't think an apology to Mr Allen is necessary.
What kind of bozo is responsible for censoring the screen by blacking it out that Sammy J version of this song by the late peter alen was lovely!
How lucky to play a beautiful Steinway
Bring them home. They are one of us.
Straight to the Facebook page.
Thank you.

Love your work, Sammy J!
Thank youuu 🙌🏼 On behalf of all of us that can no longer call Australia home 💔 #3yearsandcounting
The Qantas campaign is back!
Brilliant! Play it again Sam 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Absolutely bloody nailed it.
I moved to the UK in 2019 - 2021 and worked as a healthcare worker for the NHS in London.

Come on Australia you're better than this.
So good to hear someone say Australia properly.
"Im hoping its not for the colour of their face."
I hope not too, Sammy. I hope not too. :(
Golden thanks.
I could not love you more Sammy.
Glad someone's still got a conscience - we used to pride ourselves on being kind and welcoming, and to see this happening to our own citizens galls. How soon before this Government turns on the rest of us? Oh ... they ARE us ...

Where did you get vaccinated, S D?
You should definitely be allowed home especially when fully vaccinated
This is funny and sad in one song.
Hahaaa...
Best humour of the year 2021..
You are a treasure Sammy J!
Excellent.
Absolutely hilarious!!
This is gut wrenching.
As an Australian who's been trying to get home for nearly a year now this made me cry like a baby. Especially "one day we'll all be together once more" ugh my heart. Why is it ok for us to be made to feel this way? We are every bit Australian as those on Australian soil.

It seems inadequate for the powerful contribution you make to critical examination of Australian government policies, but thank you.
National treasure this man is
I'm Australian. Have zero interest in going back there.
Good song 👍
This is awesome
I still call Australia collect.
Thoughts and prayers 🙏🙏😅
How about some government action ?
Steinway and Sons piano!
Great piano, I played at their factory!
Hope I haven't missed the point..
Brilliant!
Brilliance
Sammy you are a funny good hearted honest man - a real Aussie unlike this government.
Nailed it Sammy !
Home is the place where if you have to go there, they have to take you.
This is an Australia I don't recognise anymore. The 'for profit' crowd have taken over.
