  • Stephen Sackur interviews Estonia's prime minister, Kaja Kallas. For 17 years, Estonia and the other Baltic states have been members of the EU and NATO. But as tensions between Vladimir Putin and the West rise, a cold wind blows through eastern Europe. How confident is the Estonian PM that her partners in Brussels and Washington have her back?

That lady is so positive about everything. He gives her a problem and she puts a positive spin on it.

Estonians really refuse to understand one fact about learning the language or may be it’s a voluntary position to torture the part of the Russian speaking population :
It’s super super difficult to learn the language so you can speak fluently WITHOUT a practice and WITHOUT living and working in the environment where NO ONE speaks your native language! Estonian language is considered one of the most difficult European languages. In the 90-s when Estonia got independence from USSR, the Russian population was voting together with Estonians to become independent, holding hands together in the Singing revolution just later to be betrayed by their own government and abandoned by Russia.
Suddenly Estonian language has become official and in order to be able to have a decent job the fluently speaking Estonian requirement became a must. And now imagine: a former Soviet republic recently been with Russian as official language, where around 60-65% of Estonians who all speak and understand Russian, how someone can learn the Estonian language without a practice?
I was growing up by going to kindergarten, school, university in Russian! All friends Russian speaking. Estonian friends speaking Russian to me. I was studying Estonian at school, at university, at evening classes, myself by watching movies and series in Estonian and still couldn’t learn it decently without the practice! And she presents it like Russian speaking population doesn’t want to learn it !
I have emigrated to another country and learned 2 foreign languages within a few years because no one spoke Russian. I had plenty of practice and speak the languages fluently now.
So I believe that if the government would really want to help to integrate the Russian speaking population into the country they would give the citizenship to everyone instead of humiliating us applying to a residence permit ( thousands of people queuing for hours to get it on time or to be deported) , they would place Estonian speaking teachers to Russian kindergartens and Russian schools so we could learn the language from age of 2 or mix up kids with Estonians and Russian speaking groups et etc etc.
There are so many solutions. None of the real solution has been taken. Instead they were getting back at Russian speaking population for the occupation years that happens half of the century ago and enjoying our suffering. I have no other explanation to give.

Negativity did not defeat Hitler during the blitz. Stephan Sackur would not have served Britain well with his negativety. Estonia is lucky to have Kaja Kallas. Nato is lucky to have Kaja Kallas.

I'm all for tough questions b/c that plays a vital role in checks and balances. However, BBC has missed the mark on Stephen Sackur. Wow, his questions lack an important historical/current context. That's a toxic combination with his pompous, disrespectful, and aggressive tone.
