    Exactly right. Also, easy to get to and put away when needed. Knives get lost when people find it easier to drop it on the ground rather than putting it back inside their awkward sheaths.

    You make really good points (pros and cons) for each carry style! I can see how carrying it in the front is a good way to carry it- your point of being lazy and safe really sold me haha. That, adding to how out-of-the-way it is, really makes it a very good sheath style.

    Fixed blades are my favorite, and I carry one every day. I have at least one of every style you showed. I probably like my horizontal carry the best. --- I'm 53 and I'm finding the older I get the more "on-the-level" I become. :-)

    Really enjoyed your video William. I'm an experienced leather worker but my expertise is with motorcycle gear. Getting ready to make a sheath for a friend for a UKW Survivor. He wants a horizontal draw to wear on his back. Figured I would look at some sheath styles from people that know about them. I've learned a few things I would not have thought of watching this.

    I like the dangler sheath as it is out of the way for trekking I also like it as it reminds me that I have not forgotten my knife or left it in the woods as I can feel it bumping on my leg
    but in thick woodland I would have a horizontal carry as it is very close to the body and won’t catch on anything

    Watching this video 2 years ago helped me decide on a mountain man style sheath for my PKS survival knife. It’s 3/16 and I wear it as a cross draw. A few years on and the sheath is getting loose and my blade has nearly slipped out a few times. Do you recommend and/or have any tips for wet forming a sheath to get it dialed in and tight? These sheaths in your video are very simple and very beautiful.. Your mountain man sheath is what inspired the design of my custom order from a nice little shop on Etsy. I had to send them the knife which I was loathe to do but it worked out pretty good in the end.

    • @wcknives
      @wcknives  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Knife handles without contours is difficult to get a tight retention especially when the leather is wet. Wet forming and also make sure the knife sits as swap as possible in the sheath to get as much retention as possible. There are many videos on TH-cam on how to wet form a leather sheath. Appreciate your views and support.

    Just saw this video. Pretty nice. I prefer a standard belt sheath on my right side for my vanguard. Horizontal carry on my left if I carry my alpha hunter. As I am ambidextrous, either side is my "strong side".
    And I am used to having something 'beating and flopping' up against my leg... inner leg that is. lol. All kidding aside, nice video. Added to my favorites. 👍

  • @MrBluesluver

    Nice video and good info. I loved that "on the level" comment. In fact I will use that line, if you don't mind. As far as carry goes for me, I've been carrying most fixed blades strong side, vertical, with the factory sheaths. I do have a couple with kydex/plastic sheaths with slots & have been wearing them cross draw or horizontal, weak side. The cross draw is my favorite, with horizontal being second for 2 reasons. (1) ccw, iwb, strong side. (2) I ride a motorcycle in decent weather and either of these methods let me draw the knife with either hand.
    Thanks for the video, I enjoy both you skills and humor.

    I also like horizontal carry and keeping all self defense tools on my person in the front (as close to 12:00 as possible); however, still being right handed and preferring the cross body draw for general use, I wear my belt backwards when carrying a fixed blade, so that the buckle is on my right for easy removal of the fixed blade sheath off of the end of the belt to my left, where it sits when being carried. This way for self defense purposes with an appendix CCW, I have the option to draw the blade with my non-dominant left hand as well… I like options and practice removing and replacing the blade both ways. Having it to the left never allows for interference with the draw of the CCW with my dominant hand, and allows maximum versatility, should I ever need it want to draw the blade with my left instead.

    Good thoughts William. I like to carry horizontally too. But when I have my backpack on, I use the dangler, because the knife doesn't interfear with the hipbelt. As soon as I take my backpack off, I go horizontally. Cheers, Marc

    Another great video. Thank you for it. Now, to the business, do you have links to the sheaths you showed? We are looking for some Horizontal carry sheaths for knives that are about 5-6 inches long, with Firesteel loop on it too, but to also be able to carry it vertical too, also we are right handed and want to carry them crossdraw on the left. Any suggestions of where to find some to consider? Have been looking on Amazon, and most of theirs are for right hand, but in the small of the back and we don't wish to carry them there, way too level for that! lol Thanks for any help you can share for us to find what we are looking for.

    I’ve never had a horizontal carry sheath that didn’t sag, pointing the handle down.

      @@arctodussimus6198 reason they sagged is because of to thin leather and placement was to far back on the sheath. Handle was to heavy . Belt loop has be be at the balance point.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who dislikes dangler sheaths the flopping around drives me nuts. My preferred way to carry a knife is how you're carrying the knife on your belt but more towards the left so it's almost like a horizontal/crossdraw. I stopped carrying a knife on my back though because I slipped once and after landing on my butt and having that pressure of a knife pushing into my lower back I decided that it wasn't for me.

    There is a reason that when people used to carry their knives on their belts using leather sheaths, they didn't use danglers. The reason is that it doesn't work guys. Especially with leather sheaths, dangler is a big issue and not am advantage. Your sheath will turn, te knife will fall before you know it. The sheath with hit everything you pass by and again, the knife will fall, or at best, the sheath will get dinged up from the first use already. Should I say more? Danglers, are a theoritical idea, that simply doesn't work. People who say it works, have only used it for around their backyeard, or just to take a photo wearing their cool knife, to upload it on instagram etc.

  • @josephanthony2865

    Sheath question. In your opinion, for a larger knife (3/16” OAL 10”), how would a mountain man style compare w/ a pancake style for cross-draw? You think the pancake would be too bulky? Both options I’m looking at can also be worn vertically vs. canted.

    • @wcknives
      @wcknives  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      joseph anthony I think it would depend on how much real estate you have on your side vs the width of rather sheath style. Typically a mountain man sheath isn’t as wide as a pancake sheath because I the sheath is folded instead of sewn on both sides. Hope this helps.

    • @josephanthony2865
      @josephanthony2865 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      William Collins Yep, I think you nailed it. Comes down to real estate. W/ other things on my belt kit and ruck, the MM style reduces a few oz and clears up a bit of space. Gonna go w/ that. Yep. I have tried the tie down on a dangler and I still find the thing snagging. Stuff will get caught between the sheath and my leg . (like those wippy branches of Multi-flora rose with a billion thorns.) Also, everytime i kneel or hunker down, that tie down seems to roll up and bind somewhere too close to the entertainment center.

    Interesting video. You have some good tips there. I just forged myself a new knife and I think a modified mountain man carry might work. ATB

    Do you find mountain mans are not comfortable for a large bowie for an... on the level.. guy. I myself am on the level And about to make a sheath for a big bowie I just made.

      Chris Cole Bowie’s usually have a large guard so not sure how a mountain man style sheath would work.

      Yep, that works. I don't wear a pack but very seldom. Most times it is loaded in a boat and carried on camp.

    William, that was a very informative video BUT, ....... I have to say that you lost the World's 1st Annual man/bird shouting match by a long looooong second place!!! You need to sign that bird up for a session on the Oprah show, it makes more sense chirping than Oprah does trying to speak ......
    Uh oh, now I went and did the deed .... sorry William if I caused you any woe by my sexist comments, [in defense of the bird, it could have been a "he" bird so both sexes were represented on that side of the subject]. And you would have been out tweeted by a "guy" ...... sort of .....
